2016 Grand Island Memorial Library Hours - December 2015

    The Board of Trustees of the Grand Island Memorial Library announce new hours of operation for the library beginning January 4, 2016. These changes have been made to reflect the changing needs of our patrons. The major changes are that the library will open at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday and stay open until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. In exchange for the additional hours the library will now close at 8:00 p.m. instead of 9:00 p.m. This decision was made due to low usage of the library between 8 and 9 p.m. Library staff will continue to monitor library use. Please contact the library at 773-7124 if you have any questions. A complete list of the hours is as follows:

Library Director Konovitz Retiring - December 2015

    After 32 years as director of the Grand Island Memorial Library, Lynn Konovitz will be retiring on December 23rd. On Monday, December 8th, friends gathered for a reception held in his honor in appreciation of his service to the library and the community. Supervisor Mary Cooke presented Lynn with a special proclamation from the town. There was also entertainment in the form of a special song written for Lynn and sung by some of those attending. Lynn plans on traveling in the future with his wife Debrah, who has been retired for five years. Thank you for an exemplary career as Town Library director.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library announces special holiday hours. The library will be closed on Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The library will be OPEN on Saturday, December 26. The library will be OPEN on Thursday, December 31 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and closed on Friday, January 1 in observance of New Year's Day. The library will be open during the holidays as follows:

Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library Book Sale - December 2015


   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library held a very successful book sale on Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21. Thank you to all who donated books, helped organize the sale and those who attended and purchased many items. The sale was a huge success!

Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library Used Book Sale - November 2015

   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will be holding a Used Book Sale at the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road on Friday November 20th and Saturday November 21st. On Friday the sale is open from 5-8 pm for Friends members only. (Friends memberships are available at the door) The sale is open to the public on Saturday from 10 am until 3pm. There will be a fill a bag sale for $2.00 from 1-3pm. Proceeds are used to benefit the library. For more information call the library at 773-7124.

Family Fun at Library - September 2015

   Story Time - The Grand Island Memorial Library will hold a Family Story Time, Pumpkin Jubilee on Thursday, October 8th from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. This program is for children ages 3 to 8 featuring stories, games, crafts and more. Guide Dog Visit - August 2015


    Author Carol Chiodo Fleischman and her guide dog, Tino visited the Grand Island Memorial Library on Thursday, August 6th and had a program. Carol is author of the book "Nadine, My Funny, Trusty, Guide Dog" which is available at the GI Library.

Bike Drawing at Library - June 2015


   The Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road is having a Bike Drawing this summer from July 1st - August 13th. All you have to do is check out five children's books and bring your receipt to the main desk to receive an entry ticket. Five books equals one ticket. You may enter as many times as you can and there is no age limit. One winner per family. Two bikes are available. The drawings will take place on August 13th at the "Summer Celebration with Nan Hoffman."

    The Grand Island Memorial Library announces its summer hours:
OPEN: Monday and Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The library is CLOSED ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. Summer hours begin the week of June 15 and continue through the Labor Day Holiday.

   On-going programs:
Preschool Story Hour - Monday or Tuesday mornings, beginning July 6, 10:30 - 11:30 am, for ages 3 -5 years old, registration is necessary.
Toddler Program - Wednesdays, beginning July 8, 10:30 - 11:00 am, for ages 18 months - 3 years old, with an adult caregiver, registration is necessary.
Book Marks Club, an independent reading club; visit the library to register and receive your reading log.
Rookie Readers - Tuesdays, beginning July 7, 2:00 - 3:15 pm, for children entering grades 1 & 2, registration is necessary.

    Duct Tape Design for Kids - April 2015

       Duct Tape Design, a creative program for children ages 8 - 12 will take place on Saturday, May 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the library's meeting room. Kids make something amazing and useful out of duct tape! All materials will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required for this program.     Town Donates Micro Film Reader - April 2015


       The Town of Grand Island donated a Canon micro film reader/printer to the Grand Island Memorial Library on Friday, April 10th. Town Clerk Pattie Frentzel stated "the Town received the Canon Microprinter in 2004 as part of a $26,700 NYS Records Management grant to preserve the historical records in the Town of Grand Island." Since that time, the Town has received several additional records management grants and the need to back up documents on microfilm is no longer necessary. The Town has the original documents, as well as digital images of all the important minutes and vital records from 1852. Former Town Councilman and current Library Trustee Richard Crawford suggested the transfer. Library Director Lynn Konovitz said the "new" equipment will improve historical research at the library as the current microfilm reader is over 20 years old.

    Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program - February 2015

        A trained Red Cross representative will conduct a session of the Citizen Preparedness Corps training program at the Grand Island Memorial Library on March 2, 2015 at 6:30 pm. This program provides a comprehensive overview on how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural and man-made disasters. The program is free and open to the public.     February Programs at the Library - February 2015

  • Knitting Club meets on Monday, February 9th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. All are welcome and no registration is necessary.
  • Aquarium of Niagara will present its Touch Tank Program on Wednesday, February 18th at 2:00 p.m. Ages 3 and older; space is limited and registration is required.
  • Family movie afternoon on Thursday, February 19th at 2:00 pm. All ages are welcome; children 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is necessary.
  • Adult Book Club meets on Monday, February 23rd at 7:00 pm to discuss "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers. All are welcome and no registration is necessary.
  • Teen Book Club meets on Saturday, February 28th at 2:00 pm to discuss The Maze Runner by James Dashner. All are welcome and no registration is necessary.
  • The Friends of the Library book sale room is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, on Wednesday from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and on Saturdays from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

    Preschool Story Hour - January 2015

        There will be a Winter Session of the Preschool Story Hour at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and crafts for children 3 to 5 years old. Children must be 3 years old by January 26, 2015. The program will be held on Monday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. beginning on January 26 and on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning on January 27.     Toddler Time Lapsit - January 2015

       There will be a Winter Session of the Toddler Time Lapsit at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and fingerplays for children 18 months to 3 years old. Each child must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Children must be 18 months old by January 28, 2015. The program will be held on Wednesday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. beginning on January 28. Registration is required.     One-on-One eReader Instruction - January 2015

       The Grand Island Memorial Library will offer one on one eReader appointments to assist patrons with borrowing electronic books from the library on Saturday, January 24 between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Participants can bring their Kindle, Nook, iPad, or other e-Device (and power cord) to the Library to learn how to borrow e-Books from OverDrive. Participants will also need to bring their library cards and any usernames and passwords associated with their device. Registration is required.
