Benefit raises $20,000 for Island cancer patient

9/18/2006
A benefit for a Grand Island cancer patient raised more than $20,000 Sunday.

The benefit was held at Charles N. DeGloper Memorial Post 9249, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Grand Island, for Shelagh Korman, who was diagnosed with stage-three bone cancer.

Korman has begun chemotherapy treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, but the uninsured portion of her treatment exceeds $1,500 per month, said organizer Evelyn Swarts.

More than 100 businesses, primarily in Grand Island, Niagara Falls, and Lewiston, donated baskets to be auctioned.

Donations still are being accepted at any M&T Bank location. Make checks payable to "Shelagh Korman Benefit."
