Back row (from left): Lynn Gugliuzza, Kenmore West; Jenna Cleary, Clarence; Melanie McGrath, Williamsville South; Heidi Griffiths, Clarence; Caitlin Ott, Williamsville East; Jenna Gage, Williamsville East; Emily Urbanczyk, Williamsville East; and Katie Campos, Nichols.

Take a close look at this year's All-Western New York girls soccer team. They should look familiar.

Half of this year's 14-member team is back from last year, and they'd make quite the sides in a 7-on-7 drill: three-time first-teamer Jamie Dougherty of Grand Island and fellow forward Emily Pitek of Nardin; midfielders Savannah Stolzenburg of Grand Island and Emily Urbanczyk of Williamsville East; defenders Jenna Cleary of Clarence and Katie Gampietro of East Aurora; and goalie Lynn Gugliuzza of Kenmore West.

Two of the area's greatest girls soccer dynasties are represented in Dougherty and Stolzenburg of Grand Island and Urbanczyk, Caitlin Ott and Jenna Gage of Williamsville East. East won its fourth straight Section VI title this season while Grand Island capped off three dominating seasons with a trip to the state final four. Dougherty and Stolzenburg both had shootout goals in the Vikings' victory over Section V's Churchville-Chili in the Far West Regionals.

Cleary is joined by Clarence teammate Heidi Griffiths while Williamsville South has two selections on the team as well. Griffiths and Nichols' Katie Campos are the only juniors on the squad.

Here's a look at the team, selected by a panel of area coaches:

Katie Campos, Nichols: Junior midfielder was part of 2000 independent state champion as a freshman and captained the Vikings to this year's state final (where they lost in a shootout). . . . Balanced offensive threat scored 12 goals and had 12 assists, giving her career totals of 28 goals and 24 assists. . . . Busy body and busy mind: Campos is an A student involved in the performing arts at Nichols, but has found the time to play soccer, basketball and lacrosse.

Jenna Cleary, Clarence: Senior defender was a four-year varsity starter for a Red Devils team that won the Section VI Class A title in 2000, was the runner-up to Grand Island last season and fell to the Vikings in this year's semifinals. . . . Also plays for the state's Olympic Development Program team as well as the Rochester Junior Rhinos. . . . May study art education at Mercyhurst or St. Bonaventure.

Jamie Dougherty, Grand Island: Knack-for-the-net Dougherty finished her career with astounding school-record 146 goals after a senior season of 38 goals and 28 assists. . . . Dougherty blew by the school mark of 113 held by Jill Conover, who completed her Bowling Green career this year as the Falcons' all-time scoring leader (65 points). . . . Dougherty had six assists in one game this year. . . . Interested in forensic science and is undecided on a college.

Jenna Gage, Williamsville East: Five-year varsity goalkeeper's favorite moment was stopping penalty kicks against Grand Island as the Flames won the 2000 Class B sectional championship. . . . Had 10 straight shutouts (12 total) and a 0.45 goals against average this season with 45 shutouts and a 0.95 GAA over 109 varsity games. . . . Still weighing options from among several Division I and II programs and is interested in studying athletic training and physical education.

Katie Gampietro, East Aurora: Senior defender has been captain of one of the area's stronger programs since she was a sophomore. . . . Member of the Rochester Junior Rhinos the last three years and was part of the Empire State Games bronze-medal winning team this summer. . . . Three-year lacrosse player . . . College possibilities are far and wide: St. Leo (Florida), University of California at Riverside, Humboldt (Calif.) and Stony Brook.

Heidi Griffiths, Clarence: Just a junior, her 23 goals led ECIC I as she earned her second straight first-team award in the league. . . . Also had seven assists in her third year as a varsity starter. . . . Has made the state indoor track meet the last two years as part of Clarence's 4x400 relay. . . . Holds a 97 average, plans to study biology at Penn State or Drexel.

Lynn Gugliuzza, Kenmore West: A dominating presence in goal in her four seasons as a starter, she capped her career by leading the Blue Devils to their school's first Section VI final and signing a Division I soccer scholarship with the University of New Hampshire. . . . Had 12 shutouts and 178 saves and a 0.76 GAA. . . . High honor student pursuing physical education major.

Alison Kicinski, Williamsville South: Senior midfielder captained the Billies the last two years and played all over the field in her four varsity seasons. . . . Has twice been honored by her school with the scholar-athlete award. . . . Possible major is business at Binghamton, John Carroll, the University at Buffalo, Le Moyne or Ithaca.

Melanie McGrath, Williamsville South: Senior left wing scored 20 goals this year, including in the Billies' semifinal loss to Tonawanda. . . . Also helped kick South deep into last year's postseason only to run up against East in the quarterfinals. . . . May study early childhood education at Nazareth, John Carroll, Wooster or Niagara.

Caitlin Ott, Williamsville East: Senior defender excelled in the critical role of sweeper, but could be dangerous out of the back - she had two goals this year after a six-goal, 13-assist campaign last year. . . . Holds a 94 average and is choosing a college from Bucknell, William & Mary, Dickinson, Cornell and Haverford, among others.

Emily Pitek, Nardin: When the Gators were the runners-up at the 1999 Catholic state final, she was the "unsung hero." Pitek shed the unsung part quickly, earning All-Catholic honors ever since and compiling a school-record 99 career goals. . . . Scored 37 goals and had 24 assists in her senior season, her second straight as the Monsignor Martin Association's MVP. . . . Is a possible journalism major at Stony Brook, Alabama, Central Michigan or New Hampshire.

Lindsay Quist-Chaffee, Allegany-Limestone: Senior sweeper anchored the Class C state champions, as the Gators earned a homecoming parade through town after sharing the state title with Immaculate Heart of Watertown (Section III). . . . Four-year varsity player had double-digit point production as a striker her first three seasons, totaling 34 goals and 32 assists for her career. . . . Also part of Section VI co-championship in 2001 and final four trip in 2000. . . . College possibilities: Binghamton, Geneseo, Niagara and St. Bonaventure.

Savannah Stolzenburg, Grand Island: Like Dougherty, a five-year varsity player for coach Peter Prozik, she connected with Dougherty on many of those record-breaking goals. . . . A great midfield orchestrator of an immensely talented team. . . . Also plays basketball and lacrosse. . . . Possible business major at Bucknell, Furman or the University of Rochester.

Emily Urbanczyk, Williamsville East: Larger-than-life in the Section VI postseason, extremely difficult to contain in the open field and lethal close to the net. . . . Had 17 goals and nine assists this season; collected 44 goals and 35 assists in her four-year varsity career. . . . Bucknell, Richmond, William & Mary, Rochester, Colgate and Dickinson are among the college choices for the possible Spanish major and owner of a 96 average.
