Monsignor Edward J. Ulaszeski, who provided and presided over Catholic pastoral care at Buffalo General Hospital and Roswell Park Cancer Institute for many years, died Thursday in Millard Fillmore Hospital. He was 86.
The Buffalo native was a graduate of Canisius High School, Canisius College and Christ the King Seminary at St. Bonaventure University.
He was ordained to the priesthood in 1952 and served the same year in the missionary apostolate at Holy Family Church in Machias. He briefly was assistant pastor of Visitation Church in the city’s Lovejoy neighborhood.
He served for decades as Catholic chaplain at both Buffalo General Hospital and Roswell Park, and in 1969 he founded the St. Jude Center, which provided pastoral care for both hospitals and trained chaplains and lay people for hospital ministry. He was diocesan director of hospital ministry and director of clinical pastoral education from 1978 to 1987. In 1988, he was appointed prelate of honor, with the title of monsignor, by Pope John Paul II. He retired in 2002.
Monsignor Ulaszeski received the Am-Pol Eagle’s Citizen of the Year for Humanitarian Service award in 1975 and the Dr. William H. Wehr Award for service from Roswell Park in 1985.
Survivors include a sister, Irene Slusarski.
Bishop Edward U. Kmiec will be celebrant for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday in St. Louis Church, Main and Edward streets.
