Hello and Welcome

Greetings readers. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mike Mehltretter. I am a Junior at Grand Island High School. One of my favorite pastimes is hockey, I play for the Grand Island Varsity team, and this is an exciting team with the Stanley Cup being contested for. The Sabres have just won the last game 5-2 and have evened the series at 2-2. This is quickly becoming one of the hottest series in the NHL currently, and let's hope the Sabres pull it out.

This is the first actual update of the high school news page. This update will include sports scores and standings for the week.

Now to what you have been waiting for

Sports scores, standings, and top track scores----
The Boys baseball team is currently at 6-7. That is good for 6th place in the division. The team is just one win away from .500 and catching up to the Kenmore East Bulldogs. The girls softball team current record is 2-9. Their record is not indicative of the character of the team. They can still manage to complete a successful season, even it doesn't reflect in the win-loss column.

Next, the boys lacrosse team is 7-2 in league play, and 9-3 in all games. They are the reigning NFL champions, and they are doing a great job defending their title. The team is also an honorable mention for state rankings. The leading scorers for the team are Harrison Rogers, 18 (Goals), 32 (Assists), 50 (Points); Jesse Martin, 23, 23, 46; Joe Edwards, 30, 11, 41; Mike Blocho, 28, 10, 38; Jim Breier, 14, 10, 24; Jim Blocho, 19, 4, 23. The boys team is currently in fourth place, one game behind of St. Francis. Another winning team is the Boy Tennis Team. Led by their fearless coach, Mr. Pray, the boys currently are holding on to third place in the NFL with a 6-3 record.

On to track and field. For the boys, Dave Jakubowski has the second fastest time, 14.9, in WNY with the 110 High Hurdles. Jakubowski has the third fastest time in the 400 hurdles with a 58.2. Way to go Jake. The 1600 and the 3200 relay teams have also combined for some of the fastest times in WNY with a 3:37.0 and 8:37.0 respectively. Mark Hajnos has the second highest High Jump with a 6-6. Gary Asbach has one of the longest long jumps with a 20-10 3/4 and a triple jump of 41-2. Now for the girls, Jennifer Rogan's 12.5 and Erica Burns' 12.7 are two of the top times in the 100 meter dash. Rogan also has a 25.50 in the 200 meters, a 1:00.3 in the 400, and a 35-9 1/2 in the triple jump, all of which are top places. The 400 Relay team has the fastest time at 50.5, and the 3200 Relay team's best time is 10:17.0. Erica Burns has a top long jump at 16-2.
