HS ROUNDUP (Nov. 24): Banker lifts Grand Island to victory

Second team All-Niagara Gazette performer Kallie Banker picked up where she left her game last spring as the freshman poured in a game-high 17 points to lift Grand Island to a 61-40 non-league girls basketball win against visiting Starpoint Monday night.

The Vikings, which also got 14 points from Susan Pioli and nine from Kristin Wegrzyn, used a 23-4 second-quarter surge to put the Lady Spartans away.

“Our up-tempo game was really working there,” GI coach Jenepher Banker said.

For Starpoint, Loren Daniel had 12 points and Andi Ridge added 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Lew-Port 4, Starpoint 3

The Lancers, led by the stellar goaltending of Carmen Crapsi and Wes Hilts’ two goals, held on for the Western New York varsity small schools win at Dwyer Arena. Also for Lew-Port, the defending league champions, Matt Browning and Dan McGovern also scored and Joe Casale had a pair of assists. For Starpoint, Andy Delgado, Glenn Toczek and Dennis Lenhard scored a goal apiece.

Grand Island 5, Will.North 0

Ryan Vertino had three goals as the Vikings shut out Williamsville North in Western New York large schools action at Hyde Park. Taylor LeFevre and Robert Schiffhauer also scored in the win.

Junior varsity

Joe Doane had a hat trick and Evan Babcock added two goals and two assists for Niagara Falls in a 9-1 win over Amherst. Billy Fortier, Jacob Loverdi, Pat Summers also scored for NFHS.

n In an earlier game, Fortier scored the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Clarence.
