DECA Members Compete at Regional Competition - 2010

On Sunday January 10th, the GIHS chapter of DECA made its way to Lewiston-Porter High School to compete against six other Western New York Schools in various business-related events. Students participated in either individual or team events regarding every aspect of business imaginable, from marketing to accounting to buying and merchandising. Each event served to educate students in the business field: events dealing with job interviews and public speaking helped to develop better communication skills, and events involving role play and test-taking encouraged students to think critically and creatively when dealing with tough situations.

Grand Island performed especially well, with twenty-one of its participants qualifying for state competition. Winners included:

Katie Brady, Principles of Business Management and Administrating

Kearney Erhard, Principles of Marketing

Seth Kline, Accounting Applications

Sarah Dolan, Retail Marketing

Megan Karpie, Decision Making Human Resources

Erica Surdi, Decision Making Marketing

Kathleen Rustowicz, Job Interview

Susan Head, Extemporaneous Public Speaking

Marwa Eltagouri, Extemporaneous Public Speaking

Kelly Hooven, Broadcast Advertising

Anmol Grewel, Visual Advertising

Ruby Kaur, Visual Advertising

Savanna Kustra, Dan Major in Team Business Law

Andrea Nicolia, Ben Bakula in Team Buying and Merchandising

Benjamin Soos, Michael Seaman in Team Sports and Entertainment Marketing

Hilary Figler, Tara Hook in Team Travel and Tourism

In addition to the above mentioned, those attending state competition in Rochester this upcoming March include Amy Grenke, participating in a chapter scrapbooking event, and Anthony Grande, who will be participating in a Manual Event. Special thanks go out to the DECA advisors, Mrs. Cheryl Chamberlain and Mr. Christopher Simpson, for their constant dedication and effort before and during the competition.
