Greater Niagara Newspapers

Staff report — A thrilling comeback victory over Niagara Frontier League rival Grand Island in the championship match helped Lewiston-Porter earn its first tournament win since 1994. Lew-Port is now 6-0 on the season after sweeping five dual meets Saturday at the annual event at GIHS.

In the title match, Lew-Port trailed GI 34-31 going into the final two bouts. Then Peter Cianchetti earned a pin at 160 and Tom Patti sealed the deal with a 7-2 win at 171. The final was 40-34.

The Lancers had three wrestlers go 5-0 on the day — Dan Reagan at 119, Joe Hill at 189 and Bashar Srouji at 215. Four others — Ryan Kromer (96), Joe Melcher (112), Patti (171) and Kevin McMurray (275) — went 4-1.

Lew-Port beat Medina, Amherst, Williamsville North, Depew and Gi on their way to the title. The Lancers are one victory away from matching last season’s win total.
