The Sheenwater Hotel and Amusement Park was located on West River and Love roads. Sheenwater was a popular resort during the 1890's and the early 1900s.

Luther photo - April 1933 - Grand Island cut off from mainland by a heavy flow of ice. Ferries unable to break through the ice jam for about a week. Shirley explains the photo as a group of Islanders loading milk on to this temporary ferry to transport it across to the LaSalle area. She is the little girl on the left standing with Catherine Ann Kissinger and Elmer Kaegebein.

Elbridge Gerry Spaulding's Victorian era Stick Style home about 1870 - "River Lawn," - a half mile of river front


Georgian home built by Franklin and Charlotte Spaulding Sidway - "River Lawn"

1903 photo - Spaulding-Sidway Boathouse - original setting on the river front of "River Lawn." Built circa 1870 by Elbridge Gerry Spaulding in the late Victorian Stick Style, the boathouse is architecturally and historically significant as a rare and outstanding example of a late 19th century recreational structure. In 1935, when "River Lawn" became part of Beaver Island State Park, the boathouse was floated up river to its present site by Franklin St. John Sidway, E. G. Spaulding's grandson. The boathouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July of 1998. (Note Franklin Sidway home to the right)

Fairly recent Conboy/Sheehan house - Love Road - Patrick Conboy came to Grand Island about 1850 and purchased the 100-acre property. The east half of the house was built between 1840-1845, and the west half in 1890

Steamer "Hope" - (historians file) Early in this century, the Hope, Union, Niagara and Grand Island also crossed at Ft. Erie


The sidewheeler, Corona, that carried tourists from the mainland to the parks, etc., burned at
the pier at Edgewater on November 18, 1898 and can still be partially seen in the Niagara River today.


H. W. Long, named for Grand Island Supervisor Henry W. Long in 1918, provided service to the Island community at the lower ferry landing which linked the Island with the Tonwanda shore.


Steamer Clarence Fix, operated by the Fix Brothers, and named for Clarence "Paddy" Fix who at one time
owned the Bedell House, the Clarence Fix and the Fix Bros. Towing Company


The Grand Island
Note - ferries - built 1901, car carrier between Grand Island and Buffalo Article 2/20/58 says getting face lift - used as "sand sucker"


The Seabreeze, launched in 1909, made one of its last trips around the Island in 1945


Early 1920s or before - Mrs. Charlotte Sidway with rope and bottle christens the new "ferry tug" named in her honor.
The former Charlotte Spaulding, for whom the Charlotte Sidway School was named, died at the age of 90 in January 1934.
