PFC. CHARLES N. DeGLOPPER,
Charles entered service on November 16, 1942 and went overseas to North Africa in April 1942. After seeing service in Sicily and Italy, he went to England in the fall of 1943 to land in France on D-Day where he was killed at LaFierre while supporting his comrades by fire from his automatic rifle as they attempted to withdraw to safety. On December 3, 1947 a United States Army transport was christened the Pvt. Charles N. DeGlopper in memory of Grand Island's hero who saved the lives of members of his platoon.
Charles was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously, in March 1946.
