Bill Riffel, the 20-year coach of the Grand Island lacrosse team, reached the 200-win mark on May 8 when the Vikings defeated Nichols. Riffel started the GI lacrosse program as a club team in 1979; it reached varsity status in 1982. Riffel is 201-121, including six Class B championships. . . . Bob Barrows walked on to the practice field Friday and was greeted by a round of applause by the Orchard Park baseball players in honor of his 68th birthday. Barrows, who has stayed on as an assistant after retiring after the 2000 season, is still on the field every day. "He's awesome," said coach Jim Gibson. "They respect him so much." . . . The Nichols girls lacrosse team finished ninth in the Midwest Schoolgirls' Lacrosse Association tournament over the weekend after defeating Pittsburgh-area schools Shaddy Side Academy, 5-2, and Ellis School, 6-4. . . . Tyler Stapleton of Southwestern (2,640 points) and Lindsey Kent of Chautauqua Lake (2,256) were winners of the CCIAC pentathlons at Franklinville this past weekend, while Franklinville's Derek Bojanowski (10:42.8) and Randolph's Danielle Greene (7:49.3) were the winners in the boys 3,000-meter and girls 2,000-meter steeplechase races, respectively.
