ALBION - The way Grand Island goalkeeper Corinne Razem saw it, she had two choices. She could make the save that would clinch the Class A Far West Regional title for her Vikings or have to serve as her team's fifth and final shooter in the shootout.

She made the save, sprawling across the front of her net to stop a drive by Churchville-Chili's Kelly Jackson, giving her team an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the shootout and a 3-2 victory over the Saints at Albion High School. Meanwhile, Williamsville East saw its season come to an end in the Class B Far West Regionals with a 2-0 loss to Section V champion and two-time defending state Class B titlist Aquinas.

"It was so windy tonight and my leg was really tired from all the punting I was doing, so I really didn't want to have to be the fifth shooter," said Razem.

"I really don't remember too much about the save, but I do remember all my teammates piling on top of me after I made it."

Vikings coach Peter Prozik called Razem "best goalkeeper in our area."

"It was tough to watch the shootout because I haven't had very good luck in them over the years," said Prozik, whose team improved to 19-1-1 and advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships next weekend at Honeoye Falls.

"When we lost in the Far West Regionals last year, the girls told me that they'd get us back to this point, and they did," Prozik added. "In fact, they'd taken us a step further by getting us to the final four."

Grand Island squandered a 2-1 halftime lead when Churchville-Chili scored the only goal of the second half to force overtime. After two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden death OT sessions, the teams went to a shootout.

Jessica Remmes got Grand Island off on the right foot by scoring on a low shot to the right of Saints goalkeeper Katie Voorheis, before Churchville-Chili's Laura Boyko hit the crossbar with her shot.

The Vikings' next two shooters, Jamie Dougherty and Savannah Stolzenburg, found the range with their shots, while the Saints' Jaclyn Fafinski scored on her team's second shot to give Grand Island the 3-1 advantage.

"It was a tough way to lose, but you have to give Grand Island credit because they were never behind," Churchville-Chili coach Nancy Thornton said.

Churchville-Chili dominated the first 25 minutes of the contest, using its ball-control attack to keep the ball on Grand Island's side of midfield.

The Saints opened the scoring with 19:55 left in the first half when Fafinski beat Razem low to the far corner after teammate Sarah Begley stole the ball in the Grand Island penalty area.

Dougherty answered for the Vikings with 8:03 to play in the half as she ran onto a pretty lead pass from Remmes and drilled a low shot past the goalkeeper.

Senior Kim Walker then put Grand Island ahead just 1:17 before the intermission on the rebound of a hard shot by teammate Courtney Bota, who alertly executed a quick start on a free kick that caught the Churchville-Chili defenders off-guard.

The score remained 2-1 until midway through the second half when Joanna Patalano headed the ball in past Razem off a well-placed corner kick by Boyko.

The best scoring chance of overtime belonged to Dougherty, but Voorheis made a diving save to turn her away with just under three minutes left in the second overtime period.

For the Flames, the loss was all too familiar as it marked the third consecutive season they were beaten in the regionals by the Little Irish.

The Flames, who ended their campaign with a 19-2-1 record, were unable to mount much of an offensive attack against Aquinas, which did an outstanding job of controlling play in the midfield area.

Williamsville East senior goalkeeper Jenna Gage, who had posted 15 shutouts this season and 10 in a row coming into this contest, had a busy night with 12 saves.

The Little Irish got on the scoreboard with 23:17 left in the first half when Julie Principie tapped home a rebound. Kelly Turley had the other Aquinas goal on a long-range shot that managed to sail over Gage's head and into the net in the blustery conditions.
