GIHS Sports Briefs - Week of May 30, 2002


Grand Island came from behind for a dramatic win while the powers of the ECIC I flexed their muscles Friday, May 24, 2002 in the Section VI baseball tournament. Chris Martello drove in Ryan Jankowski with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Grand Island a 3-2 win over Niagara Frontier League rival Kenmore West. Jankowski had walked and stolen second. The Vikings' Mick Gallagher went the distance and allowed just two hits.

The landscape of Class A changes with Grand Island arriving from Class B. Junior Jenny Rogan owns the section's fastest times in the 100 (a Section VI record 11.8) and the 200 (25.10). All three of the Vikings relays are ranked in the top 10. The 4x100 figures to be close race with just 2/10th of a second separating Grand Island from league foe Lockport.
