7/24/2005
A Grand Island man faces charges following a head-on collision early Saturday between two power boats on the East Niagara River.

The crash occurred about 1:30 a.m. under the South Grand Island Bridge, according to the Erie County Sheriff's Department.

Derek Staub, 35, of East River Road, faces charges that include the boating equivalent of drunk driving, speeding and leaving the scene of an accident. Staub's 33-year-old brother, Brendon, was charged with falsely reporting an accident.

Derek Staub and the operator of the other boat suffered minor injuries. The only other occupant - a passenger in the Staub boat, Scott Hickok - was hospitalized at Erie County Medical Center with undetermined injuries.
