10 charges follow New Year’s Eve party

A Grand Island man faces 10 misdemeanor charges relating to his alleged conduct with teenagers at a New Year’s Eve party in his home, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office reported on Thursday.

James Abshegan, 49, of Hennepin Road, is accused of giving alcohol to girls who were 16 and 17 years of age and of inappropriately touching two 17-year-old girls.

Abshegan appeared in Grand Island Town Court to face the charges Wednesday evening, said Senior Detective James F. Hatch of the Sheriff’s Office.

“We were alerted because two of the girls showed up at the Erie County Medical Center, seeking treatment after the party,” Hatch said.

The detective said Abshegan — who denies any sexual contact with the girls — faces 10 misdemeanor charges, including multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful dealing with a child, forcible touching and sexual abuse.

Abshegan’s teenage son allegedly sent out an e-mail to numerous teenagers on the afternoon of Dec. 31, inviting them to a party at 10 p. m. and telling them that “vodka, tequila and beer” would be available, police said. Fireworks were also advertised.

“We believe at least six minors were at the party,” Hatch said.

Two girls, both 17 years old, have alleged that Abshegan touched them inappropriately after encouraging them to sit on his lap, police said, adding that Abshegan denies that happened.
