Probation violation leads to prison in child porn case

LOCKPORT — A former Catholic school teacher who had pleaded guilty to child pornography charges was sent to prison Wednesday for viewing porn on his work computer and using special software to try to delete it.

Christian M. Butler, 40, of Carl Road, Grand Island, was sentenced by Niagara County Judge Peter L. Broderick Sr. to the maximum sentence of 1x to four years in prison for violating his probation.

In March 2005, Broderick had placed Butler, a former City of Tonawanda resident, on probation for 10 years for possession of a sexual performance by a child. Among the conditions was a ban on viewing porn on the Internet.

Defense attorney Mary Jean Bowman said the Erie County Probation Department filed charges May 24 alleging that after Butler was reprimanded by his new employer, a Williamsville contracting firm, for using his computer for non-work-related matters, it was found he’d been checking out porn sites.

Niagara County District Attorney Matthew J. Murphy III said it was found that Butler had installed filewiping software to try to cover that up.

Butler was a teacher at St. Dominic Savio Middle School in Niagara Falls when he was charged in 2004 with using his school computer to download child pornography, placing his hand on a girl’s thigh under her dress and making inappropriate comments to another girl.
