Choking incident brings 6-month term, probation

A Grand Island man was jailed Monday for six months for choking his former girlfriend into unconsciousness at his home a day after his mother died last year.

William J. DeGlopper, 39, a former architect most recently working as a parking lot attendant, will serve the jail term and five years of probation for the attack last July 7.

Erie County Judge Michael F. Pietruska also ordered DeGlopper — who has bipolar disorder — to continue taking medication, remain employed after he’s released from jail and report for supervision to both mental health and domestic violence programs.

At the request of prosecutor Rachel L. Newton, the judge also ordered De-Glopper to stay away from the victim.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted assault, the prosecutor said.
