Man rescued after fall into river off Grand Island

Rescue workers saved a man who fell off a Grand Island dock Sunday afternoon.

James Galinski, 46, of Buffalo, is alive thanks partly to the quick thinking of an 8-year-old who saw him fall into about six feet of 40-degree water at about 3:45 p. m. at Big Six Marina, 3200 Whitehaven Road. The unnamed child ran to a nearby house, where a call was made to the Grand Island Fire Company.

Friends kept Galinski afloat until rescue workers arrived. He was transported to Buffalo General Hospital and treated for hypothermia.
