NYPA: Crews to remove Lake Erie ice boom

Staff Reports

Weather permitting, the New York Power Authority crew will begin removing the Lake Erie/Niagara River ice boom on Monday, the International Niagara Board of Control announced.

The boom, owned and operated by the Power Authority and the Ontario Power Generation, permits the formation of a stable ice cover under which the river flows can pass easily.

Before the boom was first installed in 1964, it was common for a glut of ice to clog downriver power company intakes and damage waterfront properties.
