DWI charge after crash is second for man recently

A Grand Island man who recently was arrested on a drunken driving charge was charged Saturday night with DWI and violating an order of protection, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael D. Whitfield, 40, of Baseline Road, drove into a ditch on Baseline just before 9:30 p. m., the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies had been responding to a call where Whitfield was allegedly trying to break down a woman’s door.

Whitfield failed several field sobriety tests at a sheriff’s substation and refused to submit to a chemical test, deputies said. He was charged with DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle because his license had been suspended following a recent drunken driving arrest, deputies said.
