Wildcat Relays yield three records

5/5/2002

The Grand Island girls track team broke two of the three records set Saturday at the 13th annual Wildcat Relays. A field of 52 teams participated in the event hosted by Depew.

The Vikings, in winning the team title for the second straight year, set a new mark in the 4x200 and tied the record in the 4x100. Newfane set a meet record in the girls pole vault.

Grand Island's Becky Goelz, Erica Burns, Kara Black and Jenny Rogan ran a 1:46.3 in the 4x200 to break Clarence's 1999 mark of 1:47.7. GI's 4x100 relay ran a 50.5 to tie its own record set last year. Newfane's Breezy Workman and Jessica Oliver combined for a record 17 feet in the pole vault to break the 1999 standard of 16-6 by Alden.

Iroquois won the day's last event - the 4x100 - to edge Lancaster for the boys' team title, 52-51. David Hock, Steve Szczepanski, Jeremy Burr and Doug Blakowski were each on two winning relays for the Chiefs.

Lancaster scored big in the field events. Brian Grabinski, Duane Setter and Jake Basher combined to win the shot put and discus.

The open mile races, named for the late Mount Mercy coach Jack Donohue, were won by Steve Carden of Frontier (4:37.6) and Kate Kohout of Clarence (4:54.5).
