Friends Of Library Used Book Sale - November 2006

   A used book sale will be held on Friday, November 17, and Saturday, November 18, 2006 in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road. This sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library and will provide a great opportunity to stock your bookshelves for your winter reading enjoyment. All items are donated and the proceeds will be used to purchase new books and equipment, and for children's programs at the library.
   The sale hours are 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday for Friends of the Library with paid $3.00 paid membership which may be purchased at the door, and from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. admission price is $1.00. Saturday the sale runs from 10:00 to 3:00 p.m., with fill a bag for $2 from 1:00 -3:00 p.m.





Friends Of Library Announces Used Book Sale - 2006

In preparation for the sale, the Friends will hold Saturday book drops during regular hours on:
September 16 and September 30
October 14 and 28
November 4
   If these dates are not convenient for you, donations may be dropped off any time during regular library hours. This is a great way to help the library and also to re-circulate books you've already read. If you'd like to help with the sale, please leave your name and phone number at the main desk of the library.

   Twenty-one children in costume came to the Grand Island Memorial Library Thursday evening, October 26, 2006 to enjoy the Magic of Mr. J. who along with his son, Brandon, entertained the children with magic and humor and also tips for a safe Halloween. Refreshments and goody bags were given to all in attendance. The program was sponsored by the Friends of the Grand Island Library.





Friends Of Library To Hold Annual Meeting - 2006

   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will hold their annual meeting 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006 starting with a short business meeting. Directly after, Mr. Michael Mahaney, Director of Erie County Public Libraries, will give a talk on "The Fate of the Library." The community is invited to hear Mr. Mahaney speak and ask any questions regarding the future of libraries including the Grand Island Memorial Library. The Friends will provide refreshments.





Student Art Exhibit At Library - 2006

   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library and the Art Department of the Grand Island Schools will present the 10th anniversary of student art exhibits to be displayed in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library. A reception in celebration of this school/community partnership will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2006 in the Library Community Room, 1715 Bedell Road. Teachers, students, family, friends and interested members of the community are invited to attend this memorable event. Refreshments will be available for attendees. Friends of the Library Event

   A used book sale will be held on Friday, March 31 and April 1, 2006, in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell, Road on Grand Island. Sponsored by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library, it's a great chance to stock up on your books at great prices. All the items are donated and the proceeds will be used for new books and equipment for the library, and for children's programs held at the library.
   There will be a bid table containing special items with bids closing at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Winners will be notified by telephone and they may pick up their books after receiving notification.
   The sale will begin at 5 p.m. Friday for members of the Friends and you may purchase memberships at the door. The membership prices are individual yearly $3 and life $35; family yearly $5 and $50 life.
   From 7-9 p.m. Friday there is a one dollar charge for admission. On Saturday the sale runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with free admission. You may fill a bag with books for $2 from 1-3 p.m. If you need more information, please contact the library at 773-7124.

Book Drops - Saturdays
   In preparation for the sale, the Friends will hold Saturday "book drops" for anyone wishing to donate materials in good condition on January 28, February 11 and 25, and March 11, 25. If you cannot make it on one of these dates, you may drop off your donations at the main desk any time during regular library hours.
   If you'd like to help with the sale, please leave your name and phone number at the main desk of the library. "We can always use more people to help with sorting, setting up, and clean up afterwards," a Friends spokesman said this week.

Friends of the Library November Book Sale - 2005

   The Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale Friday, November 18, 2005 from 5:00-7:00 for members of the Friends only. From 7:00-9:00 there is a $1 donation for admission.
   The sale continues on Saturday, November 19 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with free admission. From 1-3 p.m. visitors may fill a bag for books for $2.
   A bid table containing special items will be part of the sale, with bids closing at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Winners of the high bids will be notified.
   There is a used book drop off this Saturday, November 5th and again on November 12. For those who cannot bring donations during these dates, they may be dropped off at the library any time.





Friends of the Library Party Given For Participants of Friends of the Library's Battle of the Books Program - 2005

   The Friends of the Library Board, on Saturday, October 1, 2005, gave a party for the Battle of the Books team at the Grand Island Memorial Library.
   Twenty-six teams representing 23 county libraries and 252 middle school students competed in Erie County Libraries’ 7th annual Battle of the Books contest, based on six books read and studied over the summer. Grand Island won the championship, defeating the team from Eden Library in a very exciting 10-minute lightning round.
   Team members were Dallas Broady, Chris Brownschidle, Michael Chauby, James Cooke, Tim Dyet, Kearney Erhard, Emma Henderson, Taylor Kaufman, Haroon Khawar, Meredith Stone, Brendan Stone and Alyssa Yaeger. Team coaches were Marie Volpe and Anne Slater who were assisted by Rachel Bailey, Monique D’Hand, Toni Kaufman, Rachel Lombardo and Kacey White.

Friends of Library To Hold Open Meeting - 2005
   The next meeting of the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2005 in the Library Community Room and is open to the public. If you would like to find out more about the Friends and possibly become a member, this would be a good opportunity.





Friends of Library Book Drop - Donate Your Discarded Books - 2005
   Are your bookshelves starting to overflow with books you accumulated over the summer? The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will hold book drops on the following Saturdays:
• October 1
• October 15
• October 29
• November 5
November 12
   This would be an excellent chance to clear out your bookshelves and donate the books to the Friends for their upcoming book sale, scheduled for November 18 and 19. Bring your donations to the library where a volunteer from the Friends will be available to take donations. If you cannot make the designated Saturdays, bring your books anytime that the library is open. Also, please save Campbell's Soup labels for library projects. A collection box is in the children's section of the library.
   The Friends could use more volunteers interested in sorting the donated books. If you would be available on a collection Saturday or during the week, call the library and leave your name and phone number. It's a great way to meet some new "Friends".





Friends Of Grand Island Memorial Library Hold Annual Meeting - 2005

   The Friends Of Grand Island Memorial Library will hold their annual meeting and program at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2005 in the Community Room of the library, 1715 Bedell Road. The public is invited.
   A short business meeting will be held with an election of five officers and three board members, each for a two-year term. The slate of officers proposed by the nominating committee is:

Recording Secretary Betty Gorton

   “The Life and Works of John Reuben Chapin” will be presented by his great-great granddaughter and Grand Island resident, Judy Chapin Buzby. Chapin (1823-1904) moved to Buffalo in 1870 and was a talented engraver, watercolorist and illustrator. Refreshments will be served.





Used Book Sale At Memorial Library - 2005

   A Used Book Sale will be held on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9, 2005 in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road. It is sponsored by the Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library and is a great place to find many beautiful, “gently used” book treasures. All of the items have been donated and the proceeds will be used to purchase new books and equipment for the library. Throughout the sale, a blue canvas bag with the library logo may be purchased and filled with the books of your choice for $15. A bid table containing special items will be part of the sale with bids closing at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Winners will be notified if they are the lucky new owners of a bid book.
   The sale starts on Friday, April 8 for Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library members only from 5–7 p.m. Individual memberships are $3 or life membership for $35; family memberships are $5 or life membership for $50 and all memberships are available at the door. From 7–9 p.m. on Friday there is a $1 donation for admission.    The FRIENDS OF GRAND ISLAND MEMORIAL LIBRARY will hold their annual meeting and program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 in the Community Room of the library, 1715 Bedell Road. The public is invited.
   A short business meeting will be held with an election of three board members, each for a two-year term. Any member in good standing is eligible to vote. Running for re-election are: Scott Smith, Dorothy Westhafer and Gilbert Williams.
   The program topic is biographies and will feature Mary Louise Berg who will discuss Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt. Besides her work in historical biographies, Berg writes for GUSTO, the Friday entertainment supplement to The Buffalo News. There will be a selection of gently used biographies for sale. Refreshments will be served.




Friends Of Library Book Sale Raises $2000 - 2004

   The Friends of the Library spring book sale held Friday and Saturday, March 26-27th was very successful thanks to all of the donations of books from people in the community and the many volunteers who helped out. Profits of nearly $2,000 will be used to purchase equipment for the library as recommended by the director, Lynn Konovitz. Debbie Stein served as chairman of the event.
   Island residents are reminded that books may always be donated for book sales. "Simply take your donations to the library when it is open and give them to a staff member," Mary Cooke of the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library advises. A book cart stocked by the Friends is just inside the library, on the left near the bulletin boards. This is available year round and books may be purchased for $1 (hardcovers) and $.50 (paperbacks). The stock is always changing so readers are encouraged to check it every time they visit the library. "Make your selections and pay at the counter," Mrs. Cooke said this week. A box of Reader's Digest condensed books is always available for free next to the book cart.

    The Friends of the Library met May 14, 2003 for a program of mysteries. President Jill Knickerbocker conducted the short meeting when the slate of offices was presented. Jill will continue as president and will be joined by Mary Cooke as vice president, Betty Gorton as recording secretary, Barb Jarzab as corresponding secretary and Donna Jayme as treasurer. Serving as board members are Sheila Lazaration, Marilynne Smith and Karen Nizialek.
    A summer schedule was presented for the upcoming used book sale (November 2003) and sorting and receiving will be conducted at the library all summer. Residents are reminded to drop off their cast off books so that others can share them. A new plaque for the growing list of Life Members will be purchased.
   The Mystery Stories program featured guest speaker Annemarie Jason, who not only told stories, she acted them out. Ms Jason also provided a listing of Recommended Mysteries and a booklet was distributed with all sorts of interesting information to the mystery story lovers. Following the program, Mrs. Knickerbocker presented the story teller with a treasured Library Book Bag.

       The program, in honor of Grand Island’s Sesquicentennial, will be Shirley Luther and Sharon Nichols presenting a slide show of “Vintage Grand Island Buildings.” Both are members of the Grand Island Historical Society.
       Three Directors will be chosen for two-year terms. Candidates are:

    Dorothy Westhafer
    Gilbert Williams

       Any member in good standing is eligible to vote. Secret ballots will be provided.

    The Friends of the Library used book sale, held this past weekend, featured more books than could be displayed at one time. Additional books were added regularly thoughout the sale. Proceeds go to various programs sponsored by the Friends of the Library during the year. A spring sale is planned and residents are urged to donate their used books when they have finished with them.


    Friends of Library Book Drops
        Members of the Friends of Grand Island Memorial Library will hold book drops on Saturdays from September 29 until November 10, 2001. This is a chance for you to clean up your bookshelves and donate books to the Friends for their book sales. A Used Book Sale is scheduled for November 16 and 17, 2001.        The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will hold a Spring Book Sale from 5 to 9 P.M. Friday, March 23 and from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Saturday, March 24 at the library, 1715 Bedell Road. After 1 P.M. on Saturday those attending may fill a bag for a dollar. All proceeds benefit the library.
