It’s a win-win situation when middle schoolers and elementary students can team up to benefit their larger community. And that’s exactly what happened during this holiday season between Mrs. Mary Jane Fonte and Mrs. Marcia McHenry’s Family and Consumer Science students at Veronica E. Connor Middle School and Mrs. Diane Lipp’s third graders at Huth Road Elementary School. The halls of the middle school were filled with the aroma of 1000+ freshly baked sugar cookies which the students prepared, wrapped and froze for the next step in the Interdisciplinary process. Mrs. Lipp’s students added the frosting, sprinkles and a little bit of love before selling them for the week of December 10th to the 14th to the students and faculty of Huth Road Elementary school. Thank you to everyone who donated the frosting, bags, and sprinkles for the fundraiser. What was learned by this exchange between schools? The eighth graders realized that, although they had graduated from elementary school, they could give back to others by using some of their culinary skill as well as profit from their Entrepreneurship projects to provide 90 dozen cookies. Consequently, the third graders learned to interact with their customers and put their math skills into action making change as they raised money for the 2008 Relay for Life event scheduled for the first Friday in June. And how fitting that this joint project should debut in the year of the newly announced Relay for Life theme: “Team Up For A Cure”! Last year the event sold over 2,200 cookies and made $1,208. "We are looking forward to another successful year!" a spokesman for the project said this week.

Friday, November 9th was a very different day for over 120 eighth grade Connor Middle School Family and Consumer Science students, they went on job interviews during class! What is even more different is that junior and senior high school students were conducting the interviews! This innovative program was instumental due to three teachers working together between the schools; Mrs. Mary Jane Fonte and Mrs. Marcia McHenry at Connor Middle and Mrs. Cheryl Chamberlain at the High School. Authentic job interview experience is a part of the high school's Job Search Seminar in which students interview with local business leaders. Mrs. Chamberlain wanted to bring this same excitement to the middle school through her students and the interview process. Mrs. Fonte coordinated all of the classes and times and the high school students were excited to participate. This program will continue into next semester when new middle school and high school students will participate in what is deemed as, "Junior Job Search."

Preparing our youth to be productive citizens is the aim of the Entrepreneurship Unit in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes at Veronica E. Connor Middle School. So what better way to motivate kids to learn about advertising than to bring in a published illustrator, political cartoonist and strip cartoonist to get the young Entrepreneurs’ advertising campaigns off the ground.
Mrs. Mary Jane Fonte, FACS teacher, enjoyed her own version of “Take Your Brother to Work Day” as she hosted her brother, Doug MacGregor of the Ft. Myers, Florida News-Press as a guest speaker. Doug spent the day developing creativity and getting the FACS students to think “out of the box” as they developed characters and colorful posters to entice costumers to buy their products for charity. Mr. MacGregor was delighted to have the opportunity to increase students’ self-confidence in their own creative talents which will benefit them in whatever career path they follow one day. The FACS students were thrilled to have personal instruction from a real-life artist who makes a living making people think and laugh through his illustrations.

K-12 Student Artists To Be Honored With New Award - Oct. 2007

"Artist of the Month" Orendael Miller - click photo for larger view

The Art Department of the Grand Island Central Schools is pleased to announce a new forum in which they may honor their many talented artistic achievers throughout the school year. The K-12 “Artist of the Month” is an award designed to honor one student each month who is currently enrolled in the district, and who has distinguished him or herself artistically.
Grand Island has long been home to many artistic and creative individuals, and students are certainly no exception. Students often find the visual arts an appropriate vehicle for self-expression and often use the arts as a creative outlet and opportunity to improve and enrich the environment in which they live and attend school. In an effort to recognize and commend those students who have excelled artistically and who use the visual arts positively, one student each month will be featured as an award recipient beginning this month and running throughout the school year.
It is hoped that the public will join in sharing the art department’s collective pride in the positive and creative contributions that our young people make to their school and their community and look forward to the features on our K-12 artists throughout the school year.
Pictured holding two of her recent artworks is September’s “Artist of the Month”, Orendael Miller, grade seven. Says Orendael, “I like art because it is a great way to express yourself and to have fun while making a masterpiece.” Orendael, who has been interested in art since she was a little girl, says that Monet is her very favorite artist. Art has been important in this student’s family. She credits her parents for inspiring her to make lots of art projects and for providing encouragement by drawing with her. In addition, Orendael says that her sister is an inspiration as well. The Art Department of the Grand Island Schools applauds this student’s creative achievements and unique artistic voice, and wishes her much success in all of her future artistic endeavors.

Middle School Orientation - September 2007

Principal Bruce Benson welcomed back Connor Middle School students on Monday, September 17th with a orientation program. Explained during the assembly were school rules, opportunities for students, and information on food allergies, bullying and sexual harassment. At the end of the program, the "Not Ready For Primetime" teachers performed in skits describing good and bad behavior to the delight of the audience.
The list of opportunities to get involved in at Connor Middle School is long and diverse. Sports, art, music, math, science and government are available. It is a proven fact that students who get involved in extra activities are less likely to have poor grades and legal problems later on in life. The middle school describes itself as a "Successful School," that is one where the students have respectful behavior, positive attitude and high involvement.
A food allergy presentation was given to make all the students aware of the dangers to the 30 students registered with allergies. A movie featuring NHL hockey player Tom Poti of the Edmonton Oilers, who has allergies, showed there is nothing that can hold anyone back as long as they are careful. Over 2,000,000 students in the United States have food allergies that are hereditary and can create mild to life threatening reactions. A discussion on bullying was eye-opening with a national survey statistic that 30% of all students have been bullied at one time. Bullying occurs where there is no supervision and may be either female or male in gender. Males tend to be physical while females are more into social and verbal attacks. The message conveyed was don't fall into the bullies trap, get help by contacting a trusted adult, stand up for yourself or others being bullied and avoid contact with the bully. A bully box is located in the school for the students to drop complaints into.
Sexual harassment was addressed as a serious problem that occurs in school and outside in the real world. Any unwelcome or unwanted sexual behavior makes a student feel uncomfortable. It can be physical, verbal or non-physical such as gestures, staring or showing of sexual pictures. A movie was shown detailing what sexual harassment is and how to deal with it. Sexual harassment is not appropriate and is illegal.

SCIENCE meets CSI-ence - July 2007

A few of the eighth grade science classes at Veronica E. Connor Middle School encountered a surprise on the last few days of school. Upon entering their classroom, the students were met with a crime scene complete with crime scene tape, bloody footprints, cryptic writing on the floor, and a chalk outline of a body. With the recent popularity of Crime Scene programs and the student interest in these programs, some eighth grade science students were presented with a fictional crime scene to test their evidence collecting and interpreting skills to see if they could solve the crime. The goal was to have students view the investigative process from a scientific perspective. After reading a detailed description of the crime that took place, “Mr. Boddy’s body was found in the classroom last night”, the students were provided with a list of suspects that were known to have been in the building at the time of the crime. These fictional suspects were then fingerprinted, blood typed, and were asked to provide tooth imprint samples along with other samples for evaluation.
Students worked in groups to unravel the mystery, The groups viewed hair samples under a microscope to try and link the hair sample to the murderer. Photos were taken of shoe samples and students were challenged to compare the samples to a “bloody” shoe print that was found at the crime scene. Fingerprint samples were also taken from each suspect and the students compared the whorls and rings on the samples to one lifted from the crime scene. Using Forensic Serology skills, the students compared the suspect’s blood types to the blood type that was determined to have been found at the crime scene. Finally, through Forensic Odontology, they were challenged to compare wax tooth imprints from each suspect to a bite mark also obtained at the crime scene.
To make the characters more real, fictional statements were also taken from each suspect in the form of podcasts. These podcasts were made available to the students online and they took note of interesting facts, attitudes, or incriminating evidence that the suspects may have provided in their statements. In an effort to incorporate Language Arts skills into the lesson, the culminating activity involved a creative writing process where students not only determined which suspect committed the crime, but also, how the crime was committed and why. The groups were invited to write their story and act it out for the class.
As SCIENCE met CSI-ence in the Middle School, this mystery provided a wonderful end of the year activity that integrated the scientific principals of examination, evaluation, and technology that included content and subject matter to engage and interest the students.

Neighbors Foundation Receives Donation From Middle School - June 2007

From left: Brian Brink, John McGinty, Linda Tufillaro and Bill Brodie.

This Spring the Grand Island Middle School Modified Baseball Team ordered what they thought was a routine order of sweatshirts for their team. When the order came in they were surprised that the shirts were gray not the school's official royal blue. The shirt company not only admitted their mistake; they replaced the order with the proper color and they allowed the team to keep the gray sweats. When Mr. Bill Brodie, team coach, asked the boys what they wanted to do with the gray shirts the boys elected to sell them and donate the funds to the Neighbors Foundation. When the boys were asked why they picked the Neighbors Foundation they stated that the ”organization helps Grand Island people!” Pictured are team members Brian Brink and John McGinty, along with Coach Brodie presenting Neighbors Foundation representative Linda Tufillaro with a check for $165.00.

Connor Middle School News - June 2007

By Brooke Chamberlain (8th grade) - Student Writer

Thursday, June 14, 2007 . . .Tomorrow is the last day of school for 6th and 7th grades students. It is also a half day for Middle School students and they will be let out at 11:45 a.m. Eighth grade students still have to attend school for two more NYS regents exams. The Spanish and French exams will be held Monday, June 18. Eighth Graders will ride in on the normal Middle School buses but, they will report to the high school gym. They will then look for their name tags and sit with their class. The Spanish exams will take place for 3 hours then students will be dismissed. They are usually dismissed at around 11:30 a.m. On Tuesday, June 19, 8th graders will come in on the High School buses at 7 a.m. If they cannot make the bus, they should be driven in or carpool with a friend, but the exam starts at 8 a.m., so students have to be at the school by 8. This exam is also 3 hours long and students will be dismissed afterwards. It is Regents rule that no student is allowed to leave before the 3 hours is up, so students may not be picked up early. The make-ups for these are in mid August and many students may forget to make up the exams in August if they cannot make the exams on Monday and Tuesday, so it is highly recommended they attend the exams next week.
Tuesday, June 19 is also the last day of school for the 8th graders. Parents should have received a letter in the mail with the information of moving up day included. Orientation will start at 7 p.m. Report cards will be sent out soon and should arrive in a week or two.

By Brooke Chamberlain (8th grade) - Student Writer

Thursday, June 7, 2007 . . .The 8th grade Intermediate Social Studies exams were taken this past week on June 5-6th. Still to come are the listening, reading, and writing portions of the New York State Spanish and French exams, and the last part of the Earth Science practical. These tests will be taken on June 18-19.
Parents of this year's 8th grade class should have received in the mail, an invitation to 8th grade moving up night, which will be held on June 19, the last day of school for the 8th graders.
Great job everyone who donated $1 to throw a pie at Mr. Guidotti. We raised over $300 for Relay for Life.
Relay for Life will take place this weekend from Friday at 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning. Bring tents and warm clothes, as it gets cold. All attending under the age of 18 need a chaperone or must belong to a team to stay the night. If not, you should leave around midnight. We will be raising money ALL night for the fight against cancer. 100% of proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
The social studies assessments are done. All 8th graders used 90 minutes in the morning of June 5-6, and all students finished without a problem. The Spanish finals will be on the morning of June 18 and the science finals will be held on the morning of June 19.

Veronica E. Connor Middle School Assistant Principal Carl Guidotti enjoyed a sweet lunch on Tuesday, June 5, 2007. For three lunch periods, he sat wrapped in plastic as students were invited to throw whipped cream "pies" at $1 each. A total of $326.00 was raised for the middle school Relay For Life team.

Connor Middle School News - May 2007

By Brooke Chamberlain (8th grade) - Student Writer

Thursday, May 31, 2007 . . .The 8th grade Spanish and French students still have their final New York State speaking tasks. Today is the last day and they are being given a grade out of 20. The tasks take 15 minutes and will be held in the office. Most students should only take about 5 minutes.
The school physicals took place last week. If students missed their physicals, they can go to the high school to get them from study halls only. The students must show their preauthorization physical forms to receive a pass to the high school.
Eighth grade students, class t-shirt order forms should have been handed in on May 30th to your English teachers. T-shirt order forms will not be accepted any later than that. Cost is $6.50 for S-XL and $7.00 for XXL.
Middle school and High school students who attended Spring String Fling this year at Houghton College had a great time. All of the long rehearsals paid off when the middle school students performed “Voluntary,” “Symphony No. 15 in G major,” “Waltz Triptych” (with excerpts from “Sleeping Beauty” “Skaters waltz” and “Emperor Waltz”), and the “Brandenburg Concerto, No. 3.” The elementary, junior high, and senior high orchestras all had great performances. They stayed in the dorms overnight and left after their performance the next day. Over 200 students attended the 20th annual Spring String Fling this year and we hope for even more next year.
Next week is the 8th grade Intermediate Social Studies Exams. They will take place on June 5 and June 6. Booklet 1 will be completed the first day and Booklet 2 will be finished the next day. These are the last exams of the year except for the end of the Spanish and French New York State exams. The reading, listening, and writing tasks still need to be finished. We will not know when the writing portion of the test is until the day of the exam.
All middle school students' last day of school is June 15, except for the 8th graders. The 8th grade students will attend school the 18th and 19th to finish their Spanish and French exams. Eighth grade moving up night will be held on June 19 at 7 p.m.

Thursday, May 24, 2007 . . .The 8th grade Spanish and French students will begin to take the New York State Proficiency Exam. The dates they will take place are: 5-22, 5-23, 5-24, 5-29, 5-30, and 5-31. Some students may have already taken their speaking test on May 17th. Students taking these exams will be given a pass to the office, and they should take no more than 15 minutes. Students will receive a grade out of 20. Most students may finish in 5 to 10 minutes, and they should also arrive a few minutes before their speaking time.
There is no school on Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day.
Good luck to the orchestra students attending Spring Sting Fling at Houghton College. We hope you do a great job with your performance, and have just as much fun as you did last year.
There are only three weeks of school left but students shouldn’t be winding down yet. The last report cards have not come in yet, they arrive after school ends.

Connor Middle School News - May 2007

Thursday, May 17, 2007 . . .The Kaleidoscope concert and the Connor Middle School Spring Instrumental Concert were great. The orchestras were amazing on Monday especially with the middle and high school orchestras combining to play Hatikva. The multiple different middle school groups did an outstanding job on Tuesday. The eighth graders were presented with roses on Monday and we will see them on Tuesday, June 19th for moving up day.
The art show was set up in the Viking Mall in the high school on Monday, May 14 and kept there for a few days. The different pictures, drawings, and other works of art were phenomenal. Pieces from grades K to 8 were displayed. Some teachers even said they would buy the art pieces if they could!
Tomorrow there will be a bomb drill at the Connor Middle School and Grand Island High School. Students will board buses and be evacuated to the elementary schools. Last year an apparent bomb threat at the school had made this an annual mandatory drill.

Connor Middle School Eighth Grade Honors Breakfast - May 2007

May 2007 . . . What started out with an eighth grade team leader collecting his Burger King gift certificates to treat those students who consistently excelled academically at Connor Middle School has now become a tradition know as the Eighth Grade Honors Breakfast. This event, held every May, celebrates those students who maintain academic averages on the Honor Roll or High Honor Roll for the first three semesters of the eighth grade. This year, students gathered before school on Friday, May 11th to enjoy a buffet breakfast, compliments of the Student Council and PTA. Mr. Robert Christmann, District Superintendent, and Mr. Bruce Benson, Connor Middle School Principal, offered some words of praise and encouragement. They say 'It takes a village to raise a child'. What a great job the village of Grand Island is doing to prepare our students to excel in life!

Don’t forget about next week’s mid-winter break. After that is six weeks of non-stop school.
Report cards finally came in for the second marking period. That marks the halfway point, and we can’t wait for the third marking period.
