Strengths: United States Power Squadron has members all over the United States. We are the largest non profit organization dedicated to boater education and safety. We also have a civic side as well as a social side. At this time the commander of the District which covers NY from Utica to Watertown to Western NY , is Scott Wallace of Niagara PS. There are 5 squadrons on the Western NY area. We work with the Coast Guard, the CanadianSail and Power and have taught classes for the US Boarder Patrol

Ideas: To educate all the boaters using the waters around Grand Island in basic boating skills and the "Rules of the Waterways. We also provide free Vessel Safety Checks for any boat owner who would like to make sure he has the proper safety equipment on board.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-5 Participates in Grand Island’s 4th of July Parade

The Coast Guard Auxiliary now part of the Department of Homeland Security, plays a vital role in the Team Coast Guard family and is dedicated to promoting boating safety.
Mother Nature provided a fair amount of liquid sunshine for this year’s 4th of July parade. The Auxiliary Vessel pictured here took a break from its normal patrol duties to participate in Grand Island’s Fourth of July parade. Ken Johnson (left), a former member of Flotilla 3-5, and Steve Birtz, FSO-AN (Flotilla Staff Officer for Aids to Navigation) are preparing to close up the boat after completing the ride along Grand Island Blvd in front of a very large and appreciative crowd. Many positive comments were heard along the way including, “Way to go Coast Guard,” “Look, there’s the Coast Guard,” “Nice boat,”, “Keep up the good work,” “Thanks for helping us out,” and many others.
Pictured (from left to right) is the crew that participated in Grand Island’s Fourth of July Parade: Joe Kassler, Fellowship Committee; Birtz; Perry Figliotti, Captain Division 3; and Johnson.
One of the primary missions of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary is Recreational Boating Safety. Auxiliary Vessels conduct Safety Patrols to help to keep area waterways safe and to assist the Coast Guard in their Search and Rescue responsibilities.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that works with the Coast Guard to promote boating safety through Public Education, Surface and Air Operations, and Vessel Safety Checks. The web-site http://www.wnyboatsafe.org/ has a variety of information regarding Coast Guard Auxiliary activities in Western New York including boating class schedules and vessel examination dates.
America’s Waterway Watch program, which was initiated after September 11, encourages boaters to report suspicious activity on and near our waterways. The toll-free phone number is 1-877-24-WATCH (1-877-249-2824) and is available 24 hours per day.
Auxiliary members come from all walks of life and age groups. Flotilla 3-5 is based on Grand Island and meets at the Buffalo Launch Club. Contact Dave Celani at 694-2856 for membership information.
