Quality Space Into The Future Through Use Of Conservation Easements - 2006
Quality Quest Coalition Press Release - Nov. 14, 2006 . . .Pat Szarpa will discuss how Grand Island can maintain quality space into the future through the use of Conservation Easements. Quality Quest Coalition is program sponsor of this free and open public meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Nike Base Community Center, 3278 Whitehaven Road.
A new and innovative New York State law passed in April is the first of its kind in the nation to benefit property owners interested in land conservation. The law provides for an annual rebate to property owners of 25% of taxes paid on land permanently restricted by a conservation easement which has been donated entirely or partially to a government or to a land trust such as the WNY Land Conservancy. Property owners are eligible for a rebate of up to $5000 per year regardless of when the easement was created. Landowners can claim this rebate when they file their 2006 state income tax returns.
The protection of wildlife habitat, forested areas, open spaces, important wetlands and natural scenic spots is expected to increase across New York State because of property tax relief now available on easement restricted land. Landowners with modest incomes can conserve their land without sacrificing financial security. Successive owners as well as the original easement donor-owner benefit.
The recently appointed WNY Land Conservancy Executive Director Szarpa is a hiker, scouter and birder. She presented a power point program in September to the Town Board and Conservation Commission members concerning easements. On December 7, she will tell Grand Islanders about how they can protect property of 25 acres or more of ecological value forever. She describes herself as an “Overseer of Forever.”
The plus of the Conservation Tax Credit is that it does not reduce local property tax revenue, so there is no negative impact on town and county budgets.
87% of Grand Islanders in a poll taken in conjunction with the formulation of the Comprehensive Plan, said they prize the isle’s rural atmosphere. Here’s how it can stay this way forever.
Quality Quest Coalition will sponsor a 9 a.m. December 2nd Hike-stroll with Jim Tomkins along the Big Six Nature trail from the Nike Base, 3278 Whitehaven Rd. Wear boots. Call Jim Tomkins, 773 5268 for more information.
