Bone Marrow Drive Huge Success - February 2009

Emily Sommer, Dan McBride and Dan's daughter, Rachel McBride

A bone marrow drive at Roswell Park Cancer Institute on Thursday, February 26th was a huge success. WIVB, Channel 4 covered the marrow drive and Dan McBride, 2009 Honorary Survivor Grand Island Relay for Life, appeared in the story. See "WIVB"
According to Dan McBride, “they expected about 70 people, we tested 197 for the list. They were overwhelmed with the turn out.”

Bone Marrow Drive at Roswell - February 2009

From left are Relay co-chairs Peter McMahon and Mary Dunbar, Dan McBride, Rachael McBride and Becky Sommer-Stufkosky.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute will be sponsoring a bone marrow drive on Thursday, February 26th from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM at the hospital, located at Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo. There is absolutely no cost to come and be tested. 2009 Relay For Life Honorary Survivor Dan McBride has recently relapsed and will be needing another bone marrow transplant. How awesome would it be if one of us were a match? Even though this drive is not in Dan't honor, it would mean the world to him if we could come together and be tested....if not for him....for the many other people who are waiting for that call that a match has been found.
I want you all to know that the actual testing is easy. (a little bit of paper work and a few swabs of the mouth) However, if you are considered to be a match some day, it is very important that before you sign up to do this, that you fully understand what you are agreeing to do. Of course you always have the option of backing out. However how heartbreaking for someone who has just been given the thumbs up to suddenly have that light of hope taken away. Education is the best way of learning about bone marrow donation. You can go to www.marrow.org or if anyone has any questions they can call Sue Paprocki 1-888-298-6571 ext 101.
Thank you so much for your support and blessings to everyone.
