Approximately 400 good friends of Gene and Christine Ryshkus attended a community fundraiser for the couple on Sunday, April 10, 2005 in the Buffalo Launch Club. The Ryshkus family, owners of Grand Island Garden Center, has felt the results of medical expenses related to Christine's illness for the past three years. Christine was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2002 and together she and Gene, along with their children, Tricia and Aaron, have fought the illness and continued to give to their community. Some of those donations of hundreds of trees, flowers, plenty of their time as well as holiday gifts and other giving unrelated to their business were recognized and many more were just done quietly without regard for fanfare.
Honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Citizens Of The Year in 2003, Gene and Christine moved to Grand Island in 1997 and in no time were known and loved by everyone who met them.
The event, sponsored by the Grand Island Rotary Club, was chaired by Rotarian Ted Bates and co-chaired by Florence and John White and Ann and Dennis Dahl with assistance from Beth Bates. The Buffalo Launch Club not only opened the facility, generally closed on Sundays, but cut costs to benefit the fundraiser which raised over $19,500.
The afternoon offered food and beverages, a raffle of 150+ donated baskets and several split club drawings. The main feature was the music provided by the Barroom Buzzards, Custodi and Parisi and Grand Island Jazz Workshop.

Christine's Garden Of Hope - March 2005

Island resident Christine Ryshkus has been fighting ovarian cancer for over three years. She and her husband, Gene, are the owners of The Grand Island Garden Center, and are very active in the community.
In an effort to help them with their financial burden during this time, the Grand Island Rotary Club will sponsor a fundraiser from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2005 at the Buffalo Launch Club. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at the Niagara Frontier Publications office at 1859 Whitehaven Road or Christine Learman's office at 1763 Baseline Road, or from any Grand Island Rotarian.
Entertainment will be "A Battle of the Bands - Jazz at its Best" and will feature three jazz groups: the Barroom Buzzards, Custode & Parisi and Dr. Dave Johnson's Band.
"We are asking for your consideration to help us with a basket for our Chinese auction," a Rotary Club spokesman said this week. "A financial contribution, gift certificate, or any merchandise would be very much appreciated," he said. Checks may also be made out to "Christine's Garden of Hope" and sent to HSBC Bank, 2300 Grand Island Blvd.
Arrangements for a non-financial donation are to made by calling Florence White, 773-7943, or Ann Dahl, 773-1452. Community support in any capacity would be greatly appreciated.

It is the one article of clothing that is rarely donated to the Mission and is frequently needed.

Rotary Club Sponsors Undy Sunday For City Mission - 2004
Submitted by the Rotary Club of Grand Island, NY
"Every year our community is asked to donate clothing to organizations collecting clothing for the needy. It takes different venues. Most often this is a call to help clothe those who are not able to give necessary clothing to their family to live in basic comfort. We rise to the occasion and donate sweaters, coats, shoes, socks and on and on. Grand Island is famous for their generosity.
A few years back, the Grand Island Rotary Club visited the City Mission in Buffalo and had dinner with those who used the Mission. It was an experience few of us will forget. We had a meeting with Pastor Bob. He told us of the work of the Mission and how it operated. He showed us his collection of clothing to be distributed and explained the turnover that takes place. His work was inspiring.
The question was asked of Pastor Bob, what do you need that you don’t have now? His reply, with a smile, was underwear! It is the one item that is never donated to a charity. Think about it. It makes sense."
   Rotary’s proposal:
In Memory of Pastor Bob, Buffalo City Mission, Who Served So Many So Well.
UNDY SUNDAY

Rotary Club Butterfly Garden

Shown in front of the Butterfly Garden in the Town Commons are Recreation Director Linda Tufillaro, Gene Ryshkus, Rotary President Ted Bates and Supervisor Peter McMahon.

Town Supervisor Peter McMahon, at a press conference September 21, 2001, expressed his appreciation to Rotary Club President Ted Bates for the Club's sponsorship of the new butterfly garden in the Town Commons. Gene Ryshkus from Grand Island Garden Center donated his time in the design and planting of the garden, shaped like a butterfly and suggested by Island resident Nancy Barnes of the National Wildlife Federation/Habitat Stewards. The flowers, chosen because they attract butterflies, will bloom from early spring until fall and include butterfly weed and bush, bee balm, black eyed susan's, fox glove, phlox and shasta daisy's.
"This is just the beginning of a beautification plan," Supervisor McMahon said. The Grand Island Golden Age Club, spearheaded by Director Barbara Gannon and Henry Carroll, has set in motion a beautification program, in conjunction with the Sesquicentennial celebration next year. The Club will sponsor the fall planting of daffodil bulbs at the approaches to the north and south Grand Island bridges and along Grand Island Boulevard. Mr. Ryshkus has ordered the bulbs, and monetary donations from Connections, the Recreation Department, Rotary and Lions clubs, Grand Island Business and Professional Women's Club, Ann Ruhland Levine and Peter McMahon, nearly cover the cost. The first planting date is October 13 when help will be provided from a large group of senior citizens, Island residents and local groups. Further donations of time for planting or toward the cost of the bulbs should be directed to Gene Ryshkus at Grand Island Garden Center (773-5719).
