   December 20, 2007 . . ."Ho Ho Ho, Who wouldn't go?" shopping for Mom, Dad, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, generated much excitement at St. Stephen School's "Santa's Secret Shop." Students were given the opportunity to purchase small gifts from the little shop, for their family and friends.





St. Stephen School Service Clubs Collect For The Needy - 2007

   December 11, 2007 . . .In cooperation with St. Stephen's Parish, St. Stephen School students collected over 900 food and personal care items for the needy who are helped by St. Luke's Mission of Mercy. This collection was sponsored by the service clubs of St. Stephen School: Mission Club, Student Council and National Honor Society.





"Breakfast of Champions" For Honor Roll Students - 2007

   December 4, 2007 . . ."St. Stephen School honor roll students were treated to a special "Breakfast of Champions" last week when they celebrating their first quarter academic achievement. Each of the students were encouraged to keep up the extra effort to maintain their high scores, and to motivate their fellow students to excellence."





St. Stephen School 3rd Graders Make Pies For Their Families - 2007

   St. Stephen third grade students brought home a special gift for their families this past week. Each child made their own 'homemade' apple pie! With the help of Mrs. Julia Moretti, their teacher, as well as parent volunteers, the children peeled and sliced the apples, added spices, and prepared the crust. The baked pies went home with the children to share with their families on Thanksgiving Day.

   Grand Island Lions Club announced the winners of its International Peace Poster Contest. The winners from St. Stephen School were Carly Conway, Grade 6, who won a second place $100 savings bond for her grade level; Katie Grace White, Grade 6; Callan Piazza, Grade 8; and James Bobak, Grade 8; who each won a third place $50 savings bond for their entries. Congratulations to all for a job well done!





Principal Appreciation Day, St. Stephen School - 2007

    This past week, the students at St. Stephen School expressed their love and gratitude for Mrs. Donna Ende during Principal Appreciation Day. The children created cards and prepared their own presentations to thank her for the countless ways she has helped them. The photo shows the second grade class making a "special delivery" of cards to her office on that very special day.

   At the end of each week, the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes At St. Stephen School get together for "Fun Friday." This past week, the children made their own "pilgrim hats." They also created turkeys using their little finger-painted hands to stamp the "feathers" for the turkeys!

    The students from St. Stephen School Mission Club continued their work encouraging one another to grow in their faith. This week they colorfully decorated dining placemats for prisoners. Each placemat included words and images to remind prisoners that they are loved and remembered by God and the community.

   Thursday, November 8th, 2007 . . .St. Stephen School on November 8th remembered the men and women who have served our country in armed forces. Camouflage pencils were given to all students to remind them that veterans are men and women of faith, dedicated to service. Each hour during the day, the children and teachers would pause to listen as the names of veteran family and friends were read. Then all observed a moment of silence. A special assembly was called for all students. A local military color guard representing the service branches presented the American flag, and the children sang the national anthem.
   Essays in honor of Veterans Day were shared with the assembly. The essay contest winners were announced as Brendan Stone, Rebecca Meyer, William Tompkins, and Laura Bierbrauer. Thanks to all children who participated with many thoughtful essays. Later in the day, all students listened to LtC. David Conboy present a slide show highlighting the work of the armed forces in Iraq. Special thanks to all veterans who made this event so very memorable.

   The St Stephen's Mission Club recently visited Fatima Shrine in Lewiston. The children had the opportunity to learn about this very unique, reflective landmark in Western New York. At the heart-shaped reflection pool the children prayed together. They also climbed the steps to the top of the glass shrine, to enjoy the vista of the Niagara Escarpment.

   Four lucky St. Stephen School students were selected to be picked up from their homes by a Grand Island fire engine for a ride to school. Victor Freeman, Ronald Loss, Justin Wohlfehrt and Jenna Bruno were each selected for the unique opportunity as part of Fire Prevention Week at St. Stephen School. St. Stephen School thanks the volunteers who came to teach the children, as well as all those in the fire company who unselfishly give of their time and talent to protect our community.





Red Ribbon Week At St. Stephen School - 2007

   St Stephen School celebrated "Red-Ribbon Week" with special activities the week of October 15th. The focus of the week is to promote a drug-free environment, through lessons and discussion. Each student wore a special button reminding all "Don't give drugs an inch." On Friday, students were encouraged to wear red clothing and accessories to show their support and also gave ribbons to all role models who have encouraged them to stay drug-free by their love, support, or example.





St. Stephen Students Learn Fire Safety Tips - 2007

   St Stephen School children learned some very practical fire safety tips from Grand Island's own volunteer fire company. The firemen presented an impressive demonstration of the speed in which a fire can spread in a home. They also explained the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" technique, as well as the proper use of a fire extinguisher. Later, children were given a chance to see up close the special equipment used by the Grand Island firefighters, with two lucky children winning "A Trip on the Fire Truck" in the very near future.





St. Stephen Students Take Part In Tornado Experiment - 2007

   Mrs Ann Samplinski's fourth grade students at St. Stephen School created tornado effects in Science class. The students observed that the water swirls like a tornado as the fluid flows by gravity from one bottle to the other. Students will create their own tornado for display in "Tornado Alley" in the school hallway.

   Thursday, October 4, 2007 . . .On an unusually mild day last week at St. Stephen School, Mrs. Ende, the principal decided that since the weather was so beautiful that all the students could enjoy recess instead of classes during first period that day. The children responded with great excitement to the surprise announcement that morning. Everyone had a great time during the principal's "surprise recess"!!

St. Stephen Students In Competition - Spring 2007

   Three students from St. Stephen School demonstrated their skills with vocabularies in the top 100 participants of the 2007 Reader's Digest Vocabulary Contest. Brendan Stone, Alec Buffamonte, and Patrick White represented St. Stephen School in the New York State competition.





St. Stephen's Pastor Honored - Spring 2007

   Father Paul Nogaro was honored by the students of St. Stephen School for his his great leadership, wisdom, and service on Pastor Appreciation Day. He was greeted with songs and cards by the students, praying for his continued successful leadership of the parish. We thank you Father Paul for all your hard work in St. Stephen parish, and your service to the Grand Island community!





St. Stephen Students Are Winners - 2007

   Three students from St. Stephen School were selected as winners in the "Be Aware of New York Agriculture" Contest. The contest was for students in Grade Pre-K to Grade 6. Only three students across New York State are chosen as winners for each grade level. Two students were also awarded Honorable Mention at each grade level. Kindergarten student Luke Webb was awarded First Place for his poster. Third grader Nicholas Terleky was awarded First Place for his poster and slogan. Laura Bierbrauer, a third grader, was awarded Honorable Mention for her poster and slogan. Winning entries will be exhibited in the Youth Building at the Great New York State Fair.





Rainforest Is Project of St. Stephen Students - 2007

   Mrs. Samplinski's fourth grade class has been very busy making a "rainforest" inside their classroom at St. Stephen School. The rainforest includes tropical plants with special lighting, and a "treehouse" where parents are invited to come and share lunch with their child as they learn facts about the rainforest together.

St. Stephen School Math Students Win At Competition - 2007

   Students in St. Stephen's School seventh grade participated on March 27, 2007 in the annual math contest for seventh graders at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute. The contest consisted of problems requiring ordinary arithmetic and simple geometry knowledge that were a challenge for the students. Approximately 300 students from Western New York Schools participate each year. The following students made up this year's team: Katie Bierbraurer, David Conboy, Seth Carey, James Bobak, Alex DeRosa, Brendan Mergel, Victor Sarmiento, and Jonathan Voyzey. David Conboy won third place in his division, and to Alex DeRosa who received an Honorable Mention Trophy.





St. Stephen School Holds Successful Easter Clothing Drive - 2007

   St. Stephen School Mission Club sponsored a special Easter Parade clothing drive so that everyone would have a special new outfit to wear on Easter. Thanks to the generous donations from St. Stephen's families, many boxes of clothing were given to the Family and Children's Services of Niagara Inc.

   The St. Stephen School 7th and 8th grade students in Mr. Hare and Mrs. Wild's math classes recently celebrated Pi Day. Pi Day is a day to celebrate the mathematical constant Pi (ð). Pi is an irrational number approximately equal to 3.14, and therefore is observed on March 14th. During math classes, the students measured various everyday circular items, first finding the circumference, and then the diameter. When dividing the circumference by the diameter, students found that no matter what size their circle was, they got pi, or approximately 3.14 as the resulting quotient! Students also brought in some circular treats, including cookies, and of course, pie!.

   The students, faculty, and parents of St. Stephen School worked together to prepare a St. Joseph's Day Table on March 19th. With many thanks to all who helped, a beautiful array of meatless dishes were prepared, and Father Paul Nogaro blessed the bountiful spread.





St. Stephen's Pre-K Learns Irish Fables & Lore - 2007

   St. Stephen's Pre-K class learned about some of the Irish fables and lore as they celebrated St. Patrick's Day. Among all the green decorations and their cut-out four leaf clovers and top hats, they found "footprints" left behind by leprechauns who hid "gold coins" around the classroom. The class enjoyed jello, pudding, cake, and even eggs of green!





Chinese New Year Celebrated At St. Stephen School - 2007

   St. Stephen School Pre-K and Kindergarten classes celebrated Chinese New Year recently. The children enjoyed making hand puppets in the shape of a pig, especially since this is the Year of the Pig.





St. Stephen Students Read About Famous Person - February 2007

   The fourth grade class of St. Stephen School was assigned to read a book about a famous person for a February book report. Their book highlighted a character trait that helped that person achieve his/her success. Each student then prepared a T-shirt telling about the person and their valued character trait. Students wore their shirts for a day at school and were prepared to answer any question about the famous person.

    St. Stephen School children of all grade levels combined forces to compete in the Mini-Olympics during Catholic Schools Week January 28 through February 2. With each team unified by colored clothing, they persevered through many challenges and obstacle courses, with the White Team winning this year’s bragging rights!

   Bingo! With great excitement the winners yelled out as St. Stephen students enjoyed some fun during Catholic Schools Week. The victors show off their winnings – their favorite candy! As part of Catholic Schools Week, many students had a great time bowling.

   St. Stephen School student Kristen Kalman won first place for the Elementary Division in the 2007 Buffalo Auto Show poster contest. Her poster was chosen from over 600 entries. Her reward includes an ice cream party for six at the Cold Stone Creamery. Her poster and several others will be displayed at this year’s Auto Show held at the Buffalo Convention Center. Six other students from St. Stephen School received a free ticket to the Auto Show and a certificate for free ice cream at Cold Stone.

   The students at St. Stephen School were dazzled by magic performed by Rob and Carol Allen on February 1, 2007. The Very Dairy Magician amazed grades kindergarten, 1, and 2 with various magic tricks using colored scarves, white doves, a talking picture of a cow, and milk. The program was paid for by the people at Milk for Health and the Dairy Farmers of Western New York. Although the show was extremely entertaining, Rob Allen easily worked in facts about where milk comes from, all the different vitamins people get from drinking milk and what those vitamins do for our bodies.

Carnival Day At St. Stephen School - 2007

   A Carnival Day, sponsored by St. Stephen's Family School Association, will take place at the school from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007. Featured will be a bounce house, games, prizes, face painting, food, drinks and fun for all. Admission is free. Tickets for games will be available at the door. All are welcome.
