Hospitalized Veterans Week
Remembering the Hospitalized Wounded - 2007

The members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 remind the community that the week of February 11-17, 2007 is being devoted to veterans confined to hospital wards in VA medical centers. Let's not forget them, especially during this week, set aside annually to show gratitude. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have taken a heavy toll on American bodies. Many of these wounded are not returned to duty, and face grueling months, if not years, of hospitalization.
Though Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center receive the most publicity, please keep in mind that other military hospitals exist nationwide. Moreover, now that the wounded are being discharged as civilians, VA hospitals treat a number of younger veterans. Besides them, older generations of veterans find themselves bedridden for a variety of ailments. Those with few or no family members especially enjoy visits and/or gifts.
To celebrate Hospitalized Veterans Week, please visit the Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project at, which promotes writing as a therapeutic outlet for hospitalized veterans.

Grand Island Golden Age Club members purchased caps for use by the military service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Golden Agers originally planned to knit the same type of hats and send them out, however they found a nearby store going out of business and purchased them at a discounted price. After receiving a call from the Golden Age Center, Commander Daniel McMahon of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 offered to include the hats in the Postís weekly CARE package shipment. Dan picked up the donated hats from the Golden Age Club members on Friday morning, January 19, 2007 and turned them over to Lee Dahlberg, CARE Package chairperson, who has shipped over 160 packages overseas. Lee assured the Commander that she would be happy to include the hats in her weekly packages.
