Leonard F. Walentynowicz, a Buffalo native who became one of the highest ranking Polonia leaders in federal government service as Assistant Secretary of State (Administrator of the Bureau of Security and Consular Affairs), died suddenly in his Grand Island home on July 7, 2005. He was 72.
A graduate of Technical High School and the 1955 Class of the University of Buffalo Law School, Walentynowicz initially maintained offices on Peckham Street and Fillmore Avenue. He later became Chief of the Appeals Section of the Erie County District Attorney’s office, and served as a special prosecutor for the Bar Association of Erie County. For many years, he was associated in private practice with former Lackawanna City Judge Norman Walawender in downtown Buffalo offices.
Named a director of the revitalized UB Law Alumni Association in 1962, Walentynowicz continued to serve his school as one of the first six instructors in a newly-introduced course in Trial Techniques.
Originally named by President Nixon to the sensitive State Department post, his Senate confirmation was temporarily delayed for political reasons by the late Senator Jacob Javits. Renominated by President Ford, he served as head of security for all American consulates worldwide from December 31, 1974 until succeeded by President Carter’s nominee on March 7, 1977.
A no-nonsense State Department administrator, Walentynowicz proved early in his federal career that he was more than “that token ethnic with the unpronounceable 13-letter name.”
Continuing his stay in the nation’s capital, Walentynowicz expanded the role of Executive Director of the Washington office of the Polish American Congress. He strengthened ties with Jewish and other ethnic groups, and filed briefs with courts on behalf of the PAC, Polish-American and other ethnic groups. His legal efforts on behalf of “Ethnics for Equality” (Buffalo firefighters) seeking equality in face of “reverse discrimination” earned him national acclaim. Walentynowicz’s’s views on discrimination against Euro-ethnic groups in employment situations have been published by the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights, and his oral interviews have been archived.
A member of many professional groups, he was most proud of heading the National Advocates Society, an organization of American judges and attorneys of Polish descent. In the last few years, Walentynowicz played the role of a portly lawyer in an amateur stage production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” presented by his parish.
He is survived by his wife, the former Florence R. Dzialak, and siblings Edward (Virginia), Lorraine (late Maryan) and Carol (Raymond) Sierzchula. He was the brother-in-law of Theresa Bernard and uncle of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lt. Col. Terrence K. Crowe didn't have to go to Iraq.
Based on his long military service, the Grand Island Army Reserve officer had the chance to retire last year from the 98th Division of the Army Reserve.
Col. Crowe declined. "He actually fought that to go overseas," said Col. Crowe's father, George. "He said it was time to pay his dues. That's the kind of guy he was."
A Mass of Christian Burial for "Terry" Crowe, who was killed last week during fighting in Iraq, will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Col. Crowe, who taught ROTC cadets at Canisius College, was killed by hostile fire last Tuesday during an offensive in the city of Tel Afar, near the Syrian border. He was 44.
He grew up on Grand Island, attended Huth Road Elementary School, graduated from Bishop Duffy High School in Niagara Falls and went to Niagara University, where he was in the ROTC program. He graduated in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in economics and was commissioned an Army second lieutenant.
After graduating from infantry school, he was on active duty with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany and Fort Hood, Texas, during the 1980s.
Col. Crowe returned to Buffalo, where he served as recruiting company commander for the Western New York region. He left active duty in 1992, but shortly after, he served with the Army National Guard and later the 98th Division of the Army Reserve.
He worked as carpenter with Arida Construction in North Tonawanda before taking a position as an assistant professor of military science at Canisius, instructing ROTC cadets. As an instructor, he was considered dynamic, direct and detailed, skills that spilled over when he went to Iraq last fall to help train new Iraqi security forces.
"He was an excellent and dedicated officer. That's the only way I can describe him," said his father, a retired colonel. "He did not discuss the pros and cons of the Iraqi war. He was aware of the situation completely and thought we were really trying to help the Iraqi people."
Col. Crowe won several awards during his military career and posthumously will be awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Col. Crowe, who was divorced, spent many hours at hockey rinks, baseball diamonds and soccer fields, coaching his two children, now 19 and 17.
