Knights - Concerns - Health Care System's Future - 2008

   The Grand Island Knights of Columbus will host "1 Friday, 4 Futures Initiative Meeting" at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2008 at the Knights Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road. Community members concerned about the future of the region's health care system are invited. Community health foundation representatives will be present. The Initiative is designed to gather input from the various communities in WNY on ways to improve the area's health care system. These meetings are being held throughout the eight-county region of WNY, with more than 50 held to date. The event is open to the public.

Emily Cardullo - State Champion - 2008

   Emily Cardullo, daughter of Sam and Rose Cardullo, won the girls' 13-year-old age group in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Shooting Championship. A member of the Lady Eagles team at St. Stephen, she is the first Islander to win this championship. Knights of Columbus Council No. 4752 free throw contest chairman Peter Kuszczak, and Grand Knight Gerald Dubiel were on hand recently when Emily visited the K of C hall on Whitehaven Road with the trophies she received after winning the state title on April 5, 2008. She won contests at each of five levels of the competition, culminating in the state championship at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point.

Las Vegas Night At Knights Of Columbus - May 2007
   A Las Vegas Night, open to the public will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 5th at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road. The Knights of Columbus Mary Star of the Sea Council #4752 will sponsor the event to benefit the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation. Admission is free. Food and refreshments will be available. $1 to $5 Blackjack, Roulette, Money-Wheel and More. Those attending must be 21 years of age or older.





Scrap Metal Drive At Knights Of Columbus - May 2007
   Members of the Knights of Columbus Mary Star of the Sea, Council 4752 are making their dumpster available for drop off of scrap metals that are free of refrigerants and chemicals. The dumpster will be available for the scrap metal drive from May 12 through May 21, 2007.





Knights Of Columbus Fundraises Through Paper Recycling - December 2006
   Members of the Knights of Columbus Mary Star of the Sea, Council 4752 have begun a new fundraising program through paper recycling. The Knights have obtained a bright green and yellow container called "Abitibi Paper Retriever" from Abitibi Consolidated Recycling Division. The container is highly visible and easily accessible in the Knights of Columbus parking lot at 1841 Whitehaven Road.
   The local K of C is looking for continuous fundraising support from the community, particularly from its Whitehaven Road neighbors. Recycling reduces landfill space and reduces air emissions and wastewater. More importantly, it provides revenue that can be used to help people in the Grand Island community.
   Acceptable paper items include newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogs, office paper, junk mail, and shredded paper (in clear plastic bags). Items not acceptable include corrugated cardboard, telephone books, and cardboard from food cartons of any kind, plastic, glass, and metallic materials.
   According to Knight Joe Diebold, there has been outstanding support since the fundraising program began in November 2006. The Knights appreciate and thank those who have already dropped off recyclable paper items.

K Of C To Hold Craft Show - November 2006
   Members of the Knights of Columbus will hold a Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2006 and Sunday, November 19 at the Knights Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road. Admission is free and food will be available all day. "A great place to start your holiday shopping! Come see the unique hand-crafted items including holiday gifts and decorations.

   The Knights of Columbus, Mary Star of the Sea Council held its Past Grand Knights Dinner on Saturday, October 7th at the council hall on Whitehaven Road. The annual event honors all members who have served as Grand Knight since the council was formed in 1958. Service Awards were also presented at the dinner to Wayne Anstett, PGK for Knight of the Year and Dan and Mary Lynch for Family of the Year.

   Members of the Knights of Columbus will hold another auction at 6 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2006 at the Knights Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road. K Of C Free Throw Competition - 2006
   The Knights of Columbus local/council Free Throw Competition will be held in the St. Stephen School gymnasium. The first level of competition will be held Saturday, January 14, 2006. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and competition starts at 1 p.m. Competition at this level, and in subsequent levels, is limited to boys and girls 10 to 14 years of age as of January 1, 2006. Proof of age/birth certificate is required. The entrant, as well as a parent or guardian, signs the official entry form.
   Each contestant is allowed three (3) warm-up tosses and 15 official attempts from the age-designated free throw line, using a regulation-size and gender-designated basketball. The score of each entrant is tabulated and used to determine up to 10 winners, one boy and one girl in each age group.    The first level of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship was held Saturday, January 15, 2005in the St. Stephen School gymnasium and was limited to boy and girls 10 to 14 years of age as of January 1, 2005.
   Winners are:
• Loretta Scherrer (girls 10-year-old bracket), 5 baskets
• Alex DeRosa (boys 10-year-old bracket), 11 basket
• Elliot Busch (boys 11-year-old bracket) 9 basket
• Michael Mucci (boys 12-year-old bracket) 11 baskets
   The winners will go on to the next round of competition to be held February 12 at Our Lady of Hope in Kenmore. (Grand Island participants in this competition are advised to make sure they bring proof of age.)
   Peter Kuszczak served as chairman of the event.





Knights Spaghetti Dinner To Benefit Neighbors Foundation - 2004
   The Knights of Columbus Mary Star of the Sea Council will hold a homemade spaghetti and meatballs dinner from 4:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2004 in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road. The dinner includes fresh DiCamillo bread and butter and homemade desserts by the Knights' Ladies. All proceeds will benefit the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation to support its Thanksgiving and Christmas programs.
   Dinners will be $6/adult, $5/senior citizens, $3/kids under 12. WHTT Radio will be spinning tunes and veterans will receive a token 'thank you' gift.





Mikallie Banker Ties For 2nd in Regional Free Throw Championship - 2004
   Huth Road School 4th grader Mikallie Banker entered the fourth round of the Knights of Columbus Regional free throw basketball competition championship on March 20 at Sacred Heart School in Syracuse. Makallie wound up tied for second place in her Girls Age 10 group. The first place winner had four more successful free throws than Makallie.
   The first place winners in all ten groups were excellent free throw shooters with scores ranging from 20 to 24 out of 25 attempts. Each received a large trophy and qualified for the State finals at West Point on Saturday, April 3.

   Huth Road School 4th grader Mikallie Banker is headed for the fourth round of the Knights of Columbus Basketball Competition in Syracuse this weekend (March 20-21, 2004). The Western Chapter competition follows winning the local and district competitions that started January 17 at St. Stephen School.

Nicaragua Mission Collection At K of C Hall - 2002
   The Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus invites all Island residents to attend a meeting on the many needs of the Nicaragua Mission. Ann Marie Zon, who serves the Mission, will speak at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2002 in the Knights of Columbus Hall where donations may be made from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on May 9. Among the needs are used clothing, infants to adults; footwear, all types; bedframes & mattresses, cribs, linens, light blankets; medical and school supplies; toys, bicycles, trucks, sports equipment; foods canned and dry, peanut butter, jelly and seeds for planting.
   Also needed are household, serving, and hygiene items. Religious articles of all kinds are most appreciated.
   Financial support is gratefully accepted for dairy project, sheep project for the leper community, education of children, well digging, or shipping costs. Checks may be made out to Nicaragua Missions.

Refreshments were available and the tried and true gamblers stayed to the bitter end, using up their chips to assist in the fund raising for the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation.

   Members of the Knights of Columbus and their auxiliary combined their talents to make and serve the best soup in town Wednesday night (Jan. 30, 2002). And the event included an 'all you can eat' feature. The meal included fresh DiCamillo Italian bread and butter and home made desserts - a perfect meal for a winter's night. Members of the St. Stephen's Confirmation Class served as bus boys for this annual K of C charity fund raiser, chaired this year by John Donner.










All-You-Can Eat Soup Night - 2002
   The Grand Island Knights of Columbus Charity Committee will host its annual All-You-Can Eat Soup Night from 4:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road. Knights Hold Golf Tournament - 2001
   A golf tournament at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 13, on the Beaver Island Golf Course will benefit the Grand Island Knights of Columbus' favorite charities. A 5 p.m. cocktail reception in the Knights Hall, 1841 Whitehaven Road, will be followed by a banquet and an awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

   Members of the Knights of Columbus will host a Las Vegas Night from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, March 24, at their hall at 1841 Whitehaven Road. Blackjack, roulette, the big 9 wheel and more games will be played for cash prizes. Refreshments will be available. The public is cordially invited, however, those attending must be 21 years of age or older to be admitted. Call 773-5541 for further information.

Knights Charity Committee Offers Spaghetti Dinner - 2001
   The Knights of Columbus Mary Star of the Sea Council will offer a spaghetti dinner from 4:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the clubhouse at 1841 Whitehaven Road. The dinner, sponsored by the Charity Committee, includes salad, spaghetti and meatballs, bread and butter and homemade desserts. Takeout is available.
   A Grand Island eighth-grade student who will be attending a Catholic high school next year will be the recipient of a scholarship from the proceeds of the dinner.
