Library's Holiday Hours - 2008

    The Grand Island Memorial Library announces special holiday hours. The library will be OPEN on Wednesday, December 31 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Thursday, January 1, 2009. For the remainder of the week, the library will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Make Your Own Graham Cracker House - 2008

   Make Your Own Graham Cracker House will be presented by Explore & More at the Grand Island Memorial Library on Saturday, December 6th. There will be two sessions: 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. When registering, please specify which time you prefer. This program is for children ages 6 years and older and adults. Younger children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is limited and begins Wednesday, November 12th. Library Used Computer Sale - Fall 2008

    The Grand Island Memorial Library will offer used Pentium 2 and 3 computers for sale to the general public, one per customer. The computers will be sold on Saturday, October 18th from 10:00 am until they are sold out. The Pentium 2 computers will have a sale price of $50, while the Pentium 3 computers will be sold for $75. In addition, the customer must pay sales tax. For more information, visit the library or contact the library director, Lynn Alan Konovitz at 773-7124.




Friends Of Library Announces Used Book Sale - Fall 2008

   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road, will hold their fall used book sale on Friday, November 21 and Saturday, November 22, 2008 in the community room of the library.
   There will be a bid table containing special items with bids accepted until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Winning bidders will be notified by telephone and they may pick up their books after receiving notification.
   The sale will begin Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for members of the Friends. Individual memberships are $3.00 yearly and individual life memberships are $35, family memberships are $5 and $50 for life memberships. All memberships may be purchased at the door the first night of the sale.
   Saturday's sale runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and admission is free. Between the hours of one and three, visitors may fill a bag with books for $2.00.
   Anyone wishing to donate used books in excellent or next to new condition for the sale may do so any time during regular library hours. Each Saturday until the sale there will be a designated book drop and friends will be on hand to receive and sort the donations.

"Big Read" Coming To Library - Fall 2008

   Save the Date! The Big Read is coming to Grand Island.
Littlest Read Storytime - Thursday, October 2 at 6:30 p.m. Help us "Read for the Record" to break a world record for the number of children and adults reading the same book, Corduroy. Family program, all ages welcome.
Adult Book Discussion - 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Join us for a discussion of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon.
Who Dunnit? - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 23. Put on your detective's hat to help us solve mysteries with investigators from the Buffalo Museum of Science at the library! This program is for children, ages 7-10.

Library's Toddler Time Lapsit - Fall 2008

   There will be a Fall Session of the Toddler Time Lapsit at the Grand Island Memorial Library featuring stories, songs and fingerplays for children 18 months to 3 years old. Each child must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Children must be 18 months old by October 1, 2008. The program will be held on Wednesday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. beginning on October 1, 2008. Adult Computer Classes At Library - 2008

    A series of Adult Computer Classes will be presented at the Grand Island Memorial Library. The classes are as follows:

• Microsoft Word Beginner, October 3
• Internet Beginner, October 10
• Library Catalog/My Account, October 17
• Microsoft Excel Beginner, October 24
• Microsoft Word Intermediate, October 31

   The Fall Session of the Preschool Story Hour at the Grand Island Memorial Library will be held on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. beginning on September 15, 2008. Weekly programs of stories, songs, crafts and games are open to children ages 3 to 5 years old. Children MUST be 3 years of age before September 15, 2008.    The Grand Island Memorial Library will be closed Monday, September 1, 2008 in observance of Labor Day. The library will return to its regular library hours after Labor Day which are Monday and Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

“The Big Read” Coming To Library - 2008

   "The Big Read” is coming to Grand Island! Grand Island Memorial Library will participate in this Buffalo and Erie County Public Library Program featuring The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. Mark your calendars for October 21, 2008 at 7 p.m. for a community book discussion to be held in the Meeting Room of the Library, 1715 Bedell Road. Several Grand Island Book Clubs will read The Maltese Falcon and plan to participate in the event. Everyone is welcome; you do not have to be a Book Club Member to participate. Facilitators for the discussion will be Liz Engl and Joan Droit. Refreshments will be served.
   A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is making “The Big Read” possible in Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries (BECPL). Grand Island Memorial Library will be offering other programs in October as part of this grant. More information will be forthcoming as dates for the programs are confirmed. Summer Reading Celebration - 2008

The Grand Island Memorial Library's Summer Reading Celebration was held at the library on Thursday, August 14. Over 75 children and adults enjoyed a presentation by Nels Cremean of InJest who entertained the group with his juggling and humor. The children enjoyed face painting, crafts, ice cream sundaes and balloon animals. Funding for the event was provided by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library who also supplied volunteer help for the event.

A huge crowd of 141 children and adults came to listen and participate in the Glenn Colton Concert held in the Grand Island Memorial Library community room on Tuesday, July 22. The concert was funded by Federal Library Services & Technology Act Funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.




Library Parking Lot Entrance Closed For Weekend - 2008

   The parking lot entrance to the Grand Island Memorial Library will be closed on Friday, July 18th. The book drop also will be closed from Friday, July 18th through Sunday, July 20th. As part of a New York State Construction Grant, new entrance ways will be constructed with stamped concrete. The following weekend July 25-27 the Bedell Road entrance will be replaced. Library users are requested not to return books to the dropbox until Monday, July 21st. For further information, call the library at 773-7124.




Library's Summer Hours - 2008

   The Grand Island Memorial Library announces its summer hours:
OPEN Monday and Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
and Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The library is CLOSED ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
Summer hours begin the week of June 16 and continue through the Labor Day Holiday.

   The Grand Island Memorial Library is offering several programs that encourage children to read and enjoy books this summer. The library is participating in Catch the Reading Bug @ the library, a nationwide summer reading program. See

Library Annual Meeting - 2008

   The Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library will hold their annual meeting on May 29, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the library, 1715 Bedell Road. The public is invited to attend and hear Bridget Quinn-Carey speak about local public libraries. There will be a short business meeting before the speaker. Candidates for two-year Board Membership terms for the period of May 2008 through May 2010 include Sandy Caffery and John Pax. One board position remains open. These positions will be voted on at the meeting. Refreshments will be served after the presentation.

   Thirteen children enjoyed a presentation on Saturday, April 19th by Explore & More, a children's museum where they learned about the craft of felting. The children created their own rainforest snakes and children's librarian, Anne Slater, talked about the importance of Earth Day and read the book, If I Ran the Rainforest by Theodore Geisel. The program was funded by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library.




Spring Session Preschool Story Hour - 2008

   The Spring Session of the Preschool Story Hour at the Grand Island Memorial Library will be held on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. beginning on April 28, 2008. Library Is Scene Of Easter Egg Decorating Program - 2008

   Approximately 17 children ranging from kindergarten to grade 5 took part in the Easter Egg Decorating Program at the Grand Island Memorial Library Community Room on Saturday, March 22, 2008. The children decorated eggs and made Easter cards and an Easter craft. Funding for the program was provided by the Friends of the Grand Island Memorial Library through their book sale.




National Library Week At Library - 2008

   Celebrate National Library Week at the Grand Island Memorial Library. Explore & More will present Fuzzy Felted Rainforest Snakes for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 on Saturday, April 19 at 2 p.m. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Egg Decorating At Library - 2008

    There will be a special program for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 at the Grand Island Memorial Library. Easter Egg Decorating will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Participants should bring 4 to 5 hard boiled eggs for decorating.
