Connor Character Connection Program New At Connor Middle School - 2006

Veronica E. Connor Middle School has implemented a new Character Education program called The Connor Character Connection (C3). In this program, a positive character trait will be announced each month, and the faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate students who they feel demonstrate the qualities of that month’s trait. As students are nominated, a paragraph is written about them that outlines how they specifically display the character trait of the month. The nominated students’ pictures are then displayed in the front foyer area of Connor Middle School.
This character initiative was implemented by the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports Committee (PBIS) at Connor Middle School as a supplement to the district goals of providing opportunities for Character Education. The committee explored the Six Pillars of Character and the values associated with possessing positive character traits. Studies suggest that providing students with opportunities to display positive characteristics and rewarding students for desired behaviors establishes an environment of character growth. It is the goal of the Character Connection program to establish an environment in which virtues such as honesty, kindness, sportsmanship, dependability, cheerfulness and cooperation are continually practiced and rewarded. According to the Center for Advancement of Ethics and Character, “Character education should not be viewed merely as an educational trend or the school’s latest fad; it is a fundamental dimension of good teaching, an abiding respect for the intellect and spirit of the individual."
For the month of December, Honesty was the character trait selected, and defined as displaying integrity and refusing to deceive in any way. The Connor Character Connection award recipients for December are:
Megan Ambellan
Nathan Bundscho
Chris Connors
Brooke Demarco

Connor Middle School Modified Softball Squad - Champs Again! - May 2006

By Art Meaney, Coach
Scroll down for team picture

A bright future for Grand Island softball once again appears on the horizon. This year's Connor Middle School Modified Softball squad dominated play in the NFL, going 14 wins and zero losses for the second time in three years. The girls averaged 15 runs per game while allowing an average of three per game.
Another new crop of seventh graders proved they are capable of carrying the banner of success. Leading by example was Assistant Captain Kate Boutet. Kate batted .500 and led the team in RBIs and triples, but it is her visibly deep love of the game that is most impressive. Her high expectations of herself raise the level of play among her teammates. Emma Henderson is an up-and-coming star on the mound, posting a 0.29 ERA in 24 innings and allowing only six walks while facing 100 batters. Her catcher is Emily Jones, yet another in a long line of backstoppers who know the position well. Emily has a strong arm and solid technique. Brooke DeMarco, Korin Frantz, and Shannon Moody were three of our many first basemen who hit the ball well (Brooke batted .560) and played the field with passion.
Included in the group of eighth graders were three new players, all of whom proved themselves more than equal to the challenge. Christie Borden hit the ball with authority more than any player on the team, batting .548 for the season. Jamie Sobieski was always a tough out, as she could slap, pull, and bunt at the plate. Jamie also pitched a few innings and played the smoothest first base. Samantha Tilkins was our workhorse on the mound. Sam posted nine of our wins and struck out one-third of the batters she faced (82 0f 254). Sam will truly be a force on JV next year.
Returning eighth graders included Mary George and Maria Guidotti. These two have put up with Coach Meaney for four seasons (two basketball, two softball) and are ready to move on. Mary brought a lot of energy to the team, loves the game, and played a strong outfield. Maria played a strong third base, batted .361, and let the team know when it needed to focus. Kelly Stark tied for the least strikeouts on the team (1 in 36 AB) and batted a solid .433. Kasey Sumner had another dominating season behind the plate -- flypaper on bad pitches and a quick, strong arm that took nine opposition base runners off the field. Kasey also led the team with 25 hits and nine doubles. Erika Osberg returned with a vengeance, redefining the lead-off position. Erika had a .611 batting average and an on-base percentage of almost .700., which helped her lead the team in runs scored with 22. Erika was also our steadiest outfielder, always on her toes. And finally, Captain Krystin Hoppel. Krystin's solid bat, solid glove, and quiet confidence helped ground a team of many strong personalities. Day in and day out, Krystin's lead-by-example way of doing business kept everyone focused on the same goal.
Many thanks to our co-scorekeepers, Victoria Fleming and Kari Sumner, as well as the parents, fans, and previous coaches who made this undefeated season possible. We look forward to your continued success in the high school, both on and off the field.

Veronica E. Connor Middle School has lots of heart! Student Council conducted its annual Valentine’s Day carnation sale in late January when students ordered carnations for their friends, family, teachers, themselves, or that special someone. Each carnation cost $1.00. This year, 2,584 carnations were sold! The red carnations were delivered to the students on Tuesday, February 14. By combining the carnation proceeds with money raised during a sportswear sale, the donation was an outstanding $1,500!
Student Council representatives voted to donate all proceeds from the sale this year to the Kidney Foundation of WNY, specifically for the Women and Children’s Pediatric Dialysis Unit. Aren Shanor suggested the Kidney Foundation of WNY as the recipient of this year’s charitable donation. This was a particularly heartfelt gesture, since her mother was a dialysis patient.
Mrs. Barbara Breckenridge from the Kidney Foundation of Western New York and Mrs. Mary O’Shea from Women and Children’s Hospital visited the school on Valentine’s Day to congratulate the students and receive the check from the Student Council officers: President Brett Brennan, Vice President Maria Edel, Secretary Jessica Osvath, Treasurer Stephen Vitello, and Historian Conner Bolles.
Faculty advisors Mrs. Patty Myers and Mrs. Kay Saunders would like to extend their sincere thanks to all the students, faculty, staff, parents and friends who purchased carnations.
