Singcopations Perform At Elderwood & Group Homes - December 2009

Click photos for larger view.

The evening of Monday, December 21st marked a twelve-year tradition for the Connor Middle School Singcopations Select Chorus directed by Mrs. Annalea Masiello. About 48 singers and parents visited Elderwood Health Care facility and all eight group homes on the Island owned and operated by Peoples Inc. and Heritage Christian Centers. This year Mrs. Masiello and faculy member Mrs. Karen Grande joined forces by deliverying blankets to each and every one of the group home residents. The blanket tradition was initiated by Mrs. Grande six years ago when she would hold a blanket making session at the middle school and then they would be delivered to the pediatric unit at Roswell Park. This year they decided they wanted to share the gift of song and warmth right here on the Island. After the evening's visits, the students and parents returned to school for goodies and hot chocolate.

Schools Work Together To Benefit Huth Road Playground - December 2009

It’s a win-win situation when middle schoolers and elementary students can team up to benefit the Huth Road Elementary School’s playground. And that’s exactly what happened during this holiday season between Mrs. Mary Jane Fonte’s, Family and Consumer Science students at Veronica E. Connor Middle School and Mrs. Diane Lipp’s third graders at Huth Road Elementary School.
The halls of the middle school were filled with the aroma of 400 freshly baked sugar cookies which the students prepared, baked, wrapped and froze. Mrs. Lipp’s students at Huth Road Elementary school added the frosting, sprinkles and a little bit of love before selling them during the week of December 14-18 to students, teachers and faculty at the school. Thank you to everyone who donated the ingredients, frosting, bags, and sprinkles and baked sugar cookies for the fundraiser. What was learned by this exchange between schools? The middle school students realized that, although they had graduated from elementary school, they could give back to others by using some of their culinary skills. Consequently, the third graders learned to interact with their customers and put their math skills into action making change as they raised money for the Huth Road Elementary School's playground. Thank you in advance for helping make this another successful fundraising year!

Eighth-grade art student Dominique Perri - click photo for larger view

Eighth grade art student Dominique Perri, pictured here with a recently completed pastel picture, has been selected as “Connor’s Monthly Master” for November. Dominique creates high quality artwork in a variety of media. She is enthusiastic and creative, giving her utmost attention to every visual problem. Her work regularly adorns the walls at Connor Middle School and a ceramic tile designed by Dominique was recently on display at the Grand Island Memorial Library during its twentieth anniversary celebration. Dominique is a visual thinker who always seems to have a new piece in the works. She maintains a sketchbook to record her ideas in her free time; she is also currently working on a weaving for extra credit in her art class and is an active member of the art club at school. The VCMS Art Department wishes Dominique well in all of her future art endeavors and her art teacher is proud to recognize this determined and talented student with the distinction of being named November’s Monthly Master.

Eighth Grade Artist Tommy Doctor is “Connor’s Monthly Master” - October 2009

Eighth-grade art student Tommy Doctor shows off his collage.

Eighth grade student Tommy Doctor was recently honored as “Connor’s Monthly Master” for the month of October. The designation is intended to highlight the achievements of students in grades 6, 7 and 8 for the exemplary artworks that they create. It is also hoped that their creative accomplishments will serve to inspire other students to use the visual arts in a positive manner to express their own unique thoughts and ideas.
Pictured here with a collage he recently completed, Tommy is currently enrolled in an accelerated art class at Connor Middle School, earning high school credit while still in eighth grade. He is a student who is adept in a wide-variety of media and always gives his best effort. Tommy says that he has always liked art but his interest piqued when he was about eleven or twelve yeas old. His teacher and family are encouraging to Tommy and his family takes great interest in his work, always wanting to see what he’s done and share in what he’s learned. Tommy’s mom in particular, is someone who believes in his art ability. While he expects that art will always hold an important place in his life, Tommy’s not sure if it will become a career in his future. A true Renaissance man, this student is multi-talented and considering a career as a doctor, a chef or as a professional athlete.
Tommy is pleased to have been selected as Connor’s Monthly Master and says that the honor is probably his favorite art experience so far. The VCMS Art Department is pleased to designate Tommy as their “Monthly Master” for October.

Middle School Student Is K-12 “Artist of the Month” - October 2009

Art Student Ashley Gugino

Each year, the Art Department of the Grand Island schools recognizes many of its top artistic achievers with the “K-12 Artist of the Month” award. The award which is presented to ten students annually highlights the accomplishments and achievements of district students who excel artistically and who creatively solve problems by using a wide variety of media to express and find their own unique artistic voices.
The first student recognized for the 2009-2010 school year is thirteen-year-old Ashley Gugino, an eighth grade artist at Veronica E. Connor Middle School. An accelerated art student, Ashley is currently enrolled in Studio In Art at the middle school, earning high school credit while still in eighth grade. Ashley is a perfect recipient for this award because she is a hard-working and dedicated student who always strives for perfection and consistently works to potential. She inspires everyone around her with her achievements. Ashley is pictured here holding her recently completed sgrafitto tile, which was inspired by artworks common to the Middle-East and northern Africa.
Ashley has been interested in art since kindergarten. She has many artistic family members and is particularly inspired by her mother and grandmother, who encourage her efforts and always display her work. Finding it easy to manipulate and correct, Ashley prefers pencil to all other media. Her favorite artwork, which she created last year, is a picture of one of Ashley’s favorite inspirations and muses, her cat. Ashley expects that art will be a life-long interest and hopes to pursue a career as an art teacher when she is older.
The Art Department is proud to recognize Ashley’s achievements and artistic potential and is pleased to name her the September 2009 “Artist of the Month.”
