Mission: Provide emergency assistance, primarily food or financial help (utility bills), for Grand Island residents who find themselves in temporary need. This is accomplished through a strictly volunteer organization, utilizing churches and other organizations to collect and stock an immediate needs food pantry, and raising money through community wide fund drives and special donation arrangements for employees of key Island employers.

Events: A Holiday Season (Christmas) distribution to needy families on G.I. (large food basket, plus toys and gifts for children). This is coordinated with a collection of food and gifts from schools and other organizations, plus special fund raising in the same time frame. During the rest of the year, we help the needy as we hear from their neighbors, friends or from direct phone calls.

Help: The Foundation, for the past 25 years, has been a small nucleus of devoted workers. As we grow older, we greatly need to expand our circle of active helpers and Directors. New blood is needed!

Strengths: Our long experience with charitable helping of the Island's temporarily needy, has given us procedures, expertise and contacts to provide timely, efficient help. With careful attention to confidentiality, and appropriateness of aid, our volunteer staff has developed the trust and confidence of both needy clients and donating public.

Ideas: Coordinate and focus the natural tendency of many groups and organizations who want to do 'Good Works' at the Holiday Season, into an effective all-Island activity.

Christmas Comes To 60 Island Families Courtesy Of Neighbors Foundation - 2004

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island, following its 28-year tradition, has provided food items, gifts, toys and all sorts of goodies to 60 needy families on Grand Island. The Foundation, is helped by various Island organizations including the Grand Island High School DECA Club and the Interact Club whose members assisted in the sorting and packing and the Knights of Columbus for the use of their hall for sorting and distribution of the large quantity of food donated to this project.
"It would not have been possible without tremendous assistance from many Island organizations and individuals," Neighbors President Hank Kammerer said today. "The Knights of Columbus were key in providing use of their hall for two days, school children donated over 5000 pounds of canned goods and other food and a great team of high school students from the DECA and Interact clubs sorted that food into 60 baskets for the families," he said. According the Kammerer, many other organizations such as Fuccillo Chevrolet, Invitrogen, Rotary, Zonta, BPW, all five school staffs, and many of individuals made major donations of food, gifts or funds. Firemen, school district workers and the Town Recreation Department provided invaluable assistance.
"The families who were helped cannot thank all these people personally, so the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island would like to do it for them, by thanking the individuals and organizations who supported our 'Share Your Happiness' fund drive, gave gifts, or worked in this very successful drive," Kammerer said.
Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island, NY Inc. thanks everyone and every organization for the donations of gifts of food and toys. For the complete list of the people and organizations who made donations to this year's holiday distribution, click

Neighbors Foundation Contributors To Be Included In Holiday Greetings- 2004

The Neighbors Foundation, in conjunction with its major distribution of food and gifts to temporarily needy families on Grand Island, is offering Islanders a chance to be included in the Holiday Greetings in the local news publications by sending a donation to P.O. Box 155.
Due to the unavailability of the Fire Company truck house used in the past, the members of the Knights of Columbus have graciously donated the use of their building for sorting and distribution.
The Neighbors Foundation would like to add the names of overseas service military families here on Grand Island to the Foundation list and asks for help to identify them. Email President Hank Kammerer at
HGKmrer@aol.com with questions or for more information.

Neighbors Foundation 2003 Holiday Distribution To Less Fortunate

Fifty-six families in temporary need were helped by the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island with large food and gift baskets. Students and others gave over 5000 pounds of food, other items of food and toys or gifts, which were all sorted by the Grand Island High School's DECA and Interact Club. Help was also received from the Grand Island Fire Company and Grand Island Schools maintenance staff. Contributions came in from over 100 individuals and organizations. Huth Road Elementary students made and sold ‘bookmarks,’ Middle School Students Against Doing Drugs had a special collection, the Ministerium directed its Thanksgiving Service collection to the Neighbors Foundation; these and many others raised over $7000 for the Foundation. Golden Agers knitted mittens, John’s Pizza & Subs donated gift certificates, Zonta Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Business & Professional Women’s Club and Fuccillo Chevrolet, plus several other groups collected special gifts and toys to help these less fortunate families. The Fire Company allowed the use of a Firehall for three days to sort and deliver the baskets. Several Cub, Boy and Girl Scout groups, plus the Nursery Schools had special collections. "Once again Grand Islanders showed the real community spirit that is here on Grand Island!"

Kids Raise Over $250 For Neighbors Foundation - 2002

Chris Rose and friends present check to Neighbors Foundation President Hank Kammerer.
Chris Rose gathered seven of his 4th grade, Huth Road School friends, plus his sister, into a team that made hundreds of bookmarks, most with unique patterns on them, and sold them at churches and at school. The result - over $250 for the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island to use in its Holiday Distribution of food, toys and gifts to 53 Island families in distress. The 4th graders took a simple product, make it with unique touches, worked hard to sell it throughout the community, and then made sure the proceeds went for a worthy cause. It all adds up to excellent service by Grand Island youth. Organizer Chris was helped by Justine Call, Alie Cook, Alex Killian, Kaitlyn Rose, Ivey Spier, Melanie and Ryan Thomason plus Sarah Webb in this effort, as they turned over the proceeds to Neighbors Foundation President Hank Kammerer.

Neighbors Foundation Has Successful Distribution - 2002

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island has completed a very successful Holiday Distribution of food, toys and gifts for over 50 Grand Island families who are having a hard time in this season. Thanks to hundreds of donors to the Share Your Happiness Fund Drive and also to the food and gift collection, there are many brighter faces on Grand Island. School children brought in canned goods (over 2000 items). A group of children made bookmarks and sold them and contributed over $250. Russer Foods made a wonderful donation of hams. Tops provided tremendous help and a donation to fill out the food distribution. John's Pizza contributed gift certificates. Many other organizations made substantial donations. Volunteer help from the schools (the DECA Club from High School and Maintenance Dept. staff in particular), the Grand Island Fire Company and individuals all worked very hard to make a massive, yet efficient distribution. Grand Island has remembered the less fortunate among its residents in a meaningful way.

Neighbors Foundation prepares for Christmas Holiday Season
The Neighbors Foundation will again help at least 50 or more needy Grand Island familes with large baskets of food, and gifts for any children involved. This tradition has been carried on for over 20 years as the Foundation fulfills its mission of helping those in temporary need on Grand Island.
In addition to a major canned food drive at the Grand Island schools during December, and the collection of gifts of toys, mittens, etc. from many other Island organizations, the Foundation invites Island residents to "Share Their Happiness" by making a tax deductible donation to the Foundation, mailing it to P. O. Box 155, Grand Island, NY 14072. With an all-volunteer organization, the Foundation can assure Island residents that a maximum amount of their donation goes to help those in emergency need on Grand Island. The names of all donors will be published in the holiday editions of the Grand Island E-News, the Grand Island PennySaver and the Island Dispatch. Donors who wish to remain anonymous, may request that.
Anyone wishing to donate new, unused toys or similar gifts for young children or new, unused outerwear for youth to young teens may bring them to the Town Recreation Dept. office at the Nike Baae, 3278 Whitehaven Road. For further information on these donations, residents may call Linda Tufillaro, Town Rec. Dept. Supervisor, at 773-9680.
For further information, contact Henry Kammerer, Secretary of the Neighbors Foundation, 773-1245, or Millie May, President, at 773-4907.

Please visit our website G-I-Together.ORG and fill out our SURVEY. Every group on Grand Island will have its own FREE webpage, listing: meeting times location, contact persons, your Mission Statement and a listing of events. We will also be linking your news events that appear in the local media and on IsledeGrande.Com Grand Island's E-News Source, to your page, maintaining an archived journal of pictures and news. This is the perfect opportunity for your group to connect with potential new members and the community.
