Record Breakers - Relay For Life Fundraiser - 2008

Grand Island's Relay for Life team, The Record Breakers, featuring the Polka Dot Chix, have an offer for you. We are running a campaign selling the Relay Card for a reduced price of only $5.00. What is the Relay Card you ask? It is a card that offers you the consumer discounts at 15 Island and local businesses. The businesses listed on the card are Aceti's Wine & Spirits, Rocky's Island Pizza, The Island Deli and Meat Market, Flower A Day, Mississippi Mudds, Grand Island Greatscape, X-Press One Hour Dry Cleaners, FX Graphix, The Comic Book Cafe, Martin's Fantasy Island, Island Pets & Feed, Say Cheese, Tim Phillips Garage, Old Man River and the M.O.G. The cards do not expire until May 31, 2009. These are businesses that so many of us frequent on a weekly basis. Besides that, these are businesses that show their support to so many organizations when they are asked for a donation and once again, they are offering discounts to us. It is our responsibility to show them how much they are truly appreciated. We have over 1,700 cards left and with your support, we can add another $8,500.00 in support of The American Cancer Society. Besides that, it offers you, the consumer, a way to save money. With the holidays around the corner, what a great stocking stuffer for your family, friends and staff. Please feel free to contact Dan McBride at 773-4660, Emily Sommer or Becky Sommer-Stufkosky at 774-8978. Thank you so much for your continued support. Together, we are working to find a cure.

10-Year-Old Emma Smith Organizes Relay For Life Team - 2008

Ten-year-old Emma Smith has decided to have her own Relay For Life Team in honor and memory of her Granny Annie who passed away when Emma was five months old. Emma, a student at Huth Road Elementary and the daughter of Marijane and Tim "Cubby" Smith, has already called her first meeting when the members decided to sell M and M's and to worked toward gaining the support from other youngsters in the community by either join her team or show their support. In the very first week of her team's existence, $400 was raised with minimal effort, according to her mom, Marijane. "The outpour of family and friends has been phenomenal," Mrs. Smith said.
Emma's team Co-Captain is nine-year-old Ashley Giambra, a Kaegebein Elementary student and daughter of Carol and Jay Giambra. For their team name, they have chosen Em and M with AG - that's Em and M (Mom/Marijane) with AG (Ashley Giambra), since they are co-captains and working so hard together. The team's official website is at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/emandm
Isledegrande.com commends Emma Smith and Ashley Giambra on their team effort and will keep you informed on how this young team is doing. If you have a story on a Relay For Life team of elementary students, send it to teddy@giecom.net.

Isle Relay Members Attend Eastern Division Leadership Conference - November 2007

Conference courtyard

High school physical education teacher and Relay For Life committee member Daneen Gallagher and SRP team member Colleen O'Donnell recently attended the Eastern Division Leadership Conference for Relay for Life. The weekend event was held in Albany, NY and consisted of the NY and NJ area Relays and numbered about 400 people. Friday evening consisted of a Survivor Ceremony, a Luminaria Ceremony, a game of Healthy Twister and a poster competition between the local Relays. The Western NY Zone was well represented with about 15 participants. The theme of the entire weekend was "Superheros." This year's Relay slogan is "Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back."
The Mission of the American Cancer Society is always at the forefront of its gatherings and was emphasized at the conference; "The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service."
The participants attended many different sessions on Saturday including Community Based Marketing, Planning for Growth, Fight Back through Mission, and Hope Starts Here. It was a wonderful weekend, full of information, dedicated and outgoing people, and ideas to make the Grand Island Relay for Life, being held on June 6th and 7th, the best GI Relay ever!
