Riverside Salem Dedicates Labyrinth

Barbi Lare Photo

The Riverside Salem United Church of Christ, located on West River Road, dedicated its newly constructed Labyrinth, on Sunday, November 3, 2002. Rocks from all of the Great Lakes, and many other area locations, as well as Hawaii, were used to mark the path that was suggested by Bobbie Grim and worked out by many including Roger Cook and Wayne and Carol Alt. The path is marked at the start with an Inukshuk, a traditional symbol of welcoming. The dedication was lead by Pastor Shirley Chan, prior to the regular service held at the chapel on the West River near Bedel Road. The base of the Labyrinth included several layers of earth, plastic, and fine gravel. The Labyrinth is for meditating and losing ones anxieties while moving into the center where one can stand and think quietly.

Riverside-Salem Environmental Sanctuary and Preserve

Riverside-Salem UCC, in cooperation with the Town of Grand Island and Quality Quest Coalition, has created an environmental sanctuary and preserve on the lands that connect the church and the town at 3449 West River Road.
A short walking trail through the wooded town preserve area and across the church land has been created by church members with help from St. Stephen's confirmation class. Members of Riverside-Salem will add an outdoor labyrinth and a pond, along with enhancing the natural and local shrubs, flowers and trees.
"We want particularly to thank Gene and Christine Ryshkus of Grand Island Garden Center for their donation of a dozen high-bush cranberry bushes (and Nancy Barnes of Quality Quest for arranging it) which now grace the hedgerow connecting the church and town land," June E. Licence of Riverside-Salem said recently. "We also greatly appreciate assistance from the Connections grants program and the town recreation department," she said.
It is hoped that Grand Islanders (and others) will take advantage of these meditative spaces and will suggest other improvements/enchantments and possibly offer help to create them. For more information, call June or Roger at 773-1426.
