The sesquicentennial celebration is over but will not be forgotten any time soon for those who took an active part in planning, promoting and enjoying the year of events here on Grand Island during the year 2002. Tuesday's (Dec. 31, 2002) time capsule burial ceremony drew a crowd of about 50 on the wet and cloudy day and the capsule containing memoribilia of the year, aerial photographs, a list of all property owners and much more, was lowered just after 10 a.m. Sesquicentennial committee members, town officials and several other dignataries using golden shovels combined efforts to cover the capsule and fill the large hole. The spot which is a few steps from the gazebo, is marked with a huge rock and attractive marker commemorating the event.
Supervisor Peter A. McMahon, who took charge of the morning's ceremonies, hopes the capsule will be opened in 2051, when the town begins plans for acelebration of its 200th birthday in 2052.

Sesquicentennial Time Capsule Burial - December 31, 2002

The Town of Grand Island will end its year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration with the burial of a time capsule at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at the town hall, 2255 Baseline Road as announced in a press release from town hall today (Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002).
“The capsule contains numerous items which we hope future generations will find interesting and valuable,” Town Supervisor Peter McMahon said this week. “A complete set of aerial photographs, a list of all property owners and the 2002 assessed values of every piece of property are among the items we’ve placed in the capsule,” he said.
Along with the other memorabilia there is a complete set of sesquicentennial celebration records inside the capsule. "We hope that the Bicentennial Committee will unearth the capsule forty-nine years from today. They will know what we did here in 2002, to celebrate our 150th birthday. Hopefully the materials will help them plan for a successful celebration of the community’s 200th birthday," the supervisor continued.
Supervisor McMahon closed the press release with words of appreciationg for those who worked for the success of the celebration: "On behalf of the community I want to publicly thank the Sesquicentennial Committee, and in particular the Chairman Mike Schneider for literally thousands of hours of effort which resulted in a super sesquicentennial for all of us."

Grand Island's big birthday party in honor of our town's 150th birthday has come to a close and the frosting on the cake could very well be the historic pageant staged Saturday and Sunday in the Huth Road School auditorium. The production crew and cast of over 50 are hoping those in attendance enjoyed the scenes of life on Grand Island as much as they did in providing the show.
Though Elizabeth L. Beach, better known as "Liz" has said this would be her "swan song," she pulled off another wonderful production with "Grand Island, A Grand Place To Live." Elizabeth has been acting and directing theater for over 50 years including many years with the well-remembered Island Theater Group (1960s-1980s).
The cast, in several cases, was a family affair and included the entire Burkhart, Keefe, Priest and Conboy families. Along with Liz and her husband, Robert D. Beach Sr., who did the naration, their son Rob and grandchildren, Jacob and Robert C. M. Beach took several parts.
Script writers Joan Kilmer, Karen Conboy and myself were fortunate to have the script from the original Pageant as it was presented fifty years ago for the Centennial celebration. Much of this was presented. 1952 script writer Paul J. Stefik Jr. also wrote the music and lyrics for "Grand Old Island," the theme song for that production, and used throughout the October 19-20, 2002 play. New scenes of life on the Island in the last 50 years, including music and dance, were also added.
A video showing all scenes from "Grand Island, A Grand Place To Live" will be available at a later date.

    Tractor Pull & Show Photos
The Sesquicentennial Tractor Pull this past weekend attracted all sizes, designs and capabilities of tractor. The "work horse" of the collection was the coal fired Case Steam Engine owned by Edwin Winter of North Collins. Ed gave engine demonstrations during both days of the event. The original price tag was $2,300. Other details listed were the fact that it is 80 H.P., bore is 11 inches, and stroke is 11 inches. This unit chugged up its power (including black smoke) and operated a saw which in turn, turned out lumber planks from tree trunks.
Sunday, another sunny, warm day, provided perfect conditions for the Tractor Pull for classic tractors, i.e., more than 50 years old. Several local drivers and machines competed. They included David Williams (with a 1953 Ferguson TE20), David Fischer (with a 1951 Ford 8N), Ed Bognar (with a 1927 Fordson), Jim Carlson (with a 1959 Oliver 550), George DeGlopper (with a 1951 C. Farin) and Ray DeGlopper (with a McCormick Deering 10-20 and a 1952 Allis Chalmers). The tractors were much larger than the previous day's offering, and they had to pull a much larger sled of weights as the tractors had much larger rear wheels.
Thanks to Chairman George DeGlopper and co-chair Jim Carlson for providing this unique Sesquicentennial event which was a wonderful reminder of farming and tractors on Grand Island many years ago.

The European Car Show held Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the Grand Island Rod & Gun Club and hosted by the Club, sported a field full of European Cars, the envy of all show visitors. A Grand Island Sesquicentennial event, the Show's major sponsor was Dunlop.

Story By Jay Lockrow - President British Car Club, WNY, car enthusiast and historian

One thing is definite and that is the weather for this event was HOT! For years I have been to events in the summer weather but this one out there on the skeet and trap field was one of the warmest that I have ever attended. Fifty years ago the weather was warm but not with the high humidity. It was warm enough that when the race was over we went to a friend of my dad's house on the river and went swimming. It was better than fighting the traffic as there was only one bridge in those days.

The re-enactment was a fun event. The cars were outstanding and it was great to see real sports cars with numbers on them running on public roads the way it used to be. It was great fun to have several of the original cars and drivers from the original race in 1952. It would have been wonderful to have had the Bill Spear and Jim Kimberly Ferraris back. Both of these cars have been for sale in the past few years and you probably would have to sell Grand Island to get them. Vintage Ferraris bring big dollars.

In the car department, we should first mention Gary Dryer of Williamsville who is fortunate enough to own two cars that were raced at Grand Island. The first car he bought was a 1952 Allard K2 powered with a Lincoln engine. Gary bought this car in a wrecked form and rebuilt it. It was wrecked by the original owners in the late 1960s and went through several owners before Gary acquired it. Gary has rebuilt the car to first class condition and it has won many trophies. His other car is the ex Tom Hoan 1949 MG TC that Tom drove to a class win in the 1952 race. Tom graced us with his appearance for the event and Gary let him drive his old TC around the course. He was not timed but I doubt if he beat his original time! This car has a long racing history and at least four owners since Tom had it including my dad and of course Gary.

Another car that raced at the '52 event is the 1948 MG TC of Lyn Laman who not only lives on the Island but on the original course. Her car was originally owned by Fred Woodmanse of Tonawanda. Jim Ottman, who drove a Singer in the original race, winning his class, came from Elba, NY for the re-enactment. Jim says he still has part of the trophy that he won at Grand Island.

Jack Archibald of East Aurora was the technical inspector at the original race only because he had flipped his MG TC at Bridgehampton earlier in the season. He had the car at Grand Island this time however having owned the same car 53 of its 54 years.

The car show was well attended and drew a lot of interesting machinery. The most unusual and very choice was the 1946 Alfa Romeo coupe brought down from Canada. Unfortunately the owner had a problem with the car and he put it back on the trailer and went back to Toronto. This was a fascinating car with huge alfin drum brakes and a twin cam six cylinder engine. This was basically a pre war car but one of the first built after the war. Beautifully restored, it was a shame it had problems. There was an interesting '52 Cooper and a Jaguar D type replica. There were several very pretty Porsches but in particular a lovely 365 coupe in absolute pristine condition. Bobby Deull had his '52 Aston Martin there along with his Panhard junior. There was truly a wonderful assortment. There were plenty of MGs, Triumphs, Jaguars and people. The happiest had to be the drivers in the re-enactment and as someone said to me, "The whole effort was worth it seeing the smiling faces on the drivers as they returned." It was a lot of work and many thanks to all who helped. Now if we could get some of those old unlimited hydroplanes back for the antique boat show!!!
Lyn Laman's MG TC won best of show. Complete results next week!

The Grand Island Sesquicentennial Classic Car Show took place at the Holiday Inn Grand Island Saturday, July 27, 2002. The parking lot to the left of the Hotel was filled with all sorts of "old" cars, most of which did not look old. That's Dr. Ted Rayhill standing next to his recently acquired 1935 Auburn Boat Tail Speedster. Also shown (right) is a 1936 Cord from Fort Erie, Ontario. Ric Simpson is driving the car he has owned and driven since 1959 when he purchased the treasure for $125. Mr. Simpson has become the expert on Cord, having learned to drive as a youngster on a family Cord and having Cords ever since. Folks world over contact him for information and instructions on restoring them. This Cord (pictured above) won the 2nd place in the National Meet in 1968.

If you attended the big Sesquicentennial Craft Show at Town Commons on the weekend before the Fourth of July 2002, did you see the Kids Kreative Korner nearby? Sue Novits, director of the GIFTS Program and Lee Tetkowski offered several fun projects for kids of all ages. Littlest ones were happily stringing bright colored shapes of macaroni and walking proudly away wearing their new necklaces. Older ones were adding sequins and glitter and even lentils and split peas to natural slices of wood, thanks to the generosity of Jim Tomkins. The most popular craft for slightly older girls and boys was creating "imaginary sandals," a way to decorate bare feet (or hands) with gold elastic and pony beads and imagination! Some of the kind folks who helped Sue and Lee direct the children on that Saturday and Sunday were Desmond Carswell, Ela Orlowski, Lynn Henschell, Kim Auger, Erin Koprevich, Lisa Kline, Nora Kline, Mark Fenz and Harry Carter. Joan Droit shared erly American toys lent from the Amherst Museum with everyone interested on Sunday. Though she wasn't able to attend these events on that weekend, Nancy Bolles was very instrumental in the planning and preparation. Thanks to all who gave many of our young Grand Islanders their own corner!

    Sheep To Shawl Photos

    By Lee Tetkowski
Two little live lambs gave more authenticity to the understanding of where woolen fabric comes from on Saturday, June 30, 2002 at the Town Commons. Mary Cooke and her children provided care for them. If you were there you saw the fleece spread out on the grass, and a group of carders and spinners. Since Islanders Marge Egan and Lee Tetkowski are active members of The Buffalo Weavers Guild, many other members volunteered to help them celebrate the Sesquicentennial with a Sheep-To-Shawl event. Nancy Foss had a tripod and kettle over a wood fire, using natural dyes from plants, to dye skeins of wool. Joyce Stoorza, Marge Alabran, Cathy Peterson Steffan, Joyce Rose, Kris Kolber as well as Marge Egan demonstrated on a variety of spinning wheels. Meanwhile Lee Tetkowski worked away weaving the luxurious hand-spun shawl, which was being auctioned off by Cathy's husband to raise money to donate a Heifer to a needy country. At the end of the demonstration the winning name was picked: Audra Wynne. As promised, Lee had completed the weaving and finished the fringes by the Fourth of July, when Audra happily received it.

    Swanick Funds KidBiz Program

The t-shirts were designed for KidBiz by RAD-3D Custom Design. The annual KidBiz Sidewalk Sale will be held Saturday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Erie County Legislator Charles M. Swanick has purchased t-shirts for all the young entrepreneurs participating is the annual KidBiz Sidewalk Sale. This year’s event will be held Saturday, June 29, 2002 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be located along Whitehaven Road as part of the many activities planned in celebration of Grand Island’s 150th birthday. KidBiz, developed by the Small Business Development Center at Buffalo State College and Forever Elmwood, was launched in 1996. It was designed to give children in the third through sixth grade the experience and excitement of running their own business.
KidBiz made its debut on Grand Island in 1997 as part of the “Plaza Happening”. Mike Heftka, Sue Hillock and Jim Rogan coordinated the event with over 30 children selling their products along the sidewalks under the canopy of the Grand Island Plaza. Articles sold included old books, toys, crafts, baked goods, and a whole lot more. The young business owners particularly got a sense of running a business as they had to pay a fifty cent rental space fee and received a “license” to sell at the site after the rent was paid. KidBiz is an excellent opportunity for children to engage in a real-life business experience and is sponsored by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce.

    Supervisor Lauds Tree Planters
Sesquicentennial Tree Planting Project Deemed a Success

    Dear Editor:
On Saturday June 8th between seventy-five and one hundred volunteers successfully completed a very significant Sesquicentennial project at Veterans Park. They planted one hundred and fifty trees in commemoration of Grand Island’s 150th Birthday.
While everyone’s help is greatly appreciated, there are a few who deserve special mention. First, the two major sponsors, GIBCO-Invitrogen and Erie County Legislator Chuck Swanick. Together, their contributions covered almost two thirds of the project cost. Without their financial support the project would have been impossible.
Next Councilman Dan Robillard, owner of Total Landscape Care Inc. Dan gave his time, his talent and his staff to the project. His knowledge, skill and advice helped us cut the overall project cost. In addition, Total Landscape Care Inc. employees worked on the project all day Saturday and again on Monday.
Last but not least, my heartfelt thanks to all of the individual tree sponsors and the volunteers who made this happen. Veterans Park is certainly better because you helped. I know that the users of the Park will enjoy these trees for years to come.
I hope this will be the start of a new tradition. A tradition of an annual project, done by volunteers, which in some way permanently improves the quality of life for the residents of Grand Island. One can only imagine the cumulative impact of fifty annual projects when our Town celebrates its 200th Birthday.
Thanks to all of you for making Grand Island a Great Island!
    Peter A. McMahon
    Supervisor Town of Grand Island

All 150 trees were sponsored by Grand Islanders who were invited to buy them as memorials of their loved ones or as a family remembrance. Recreation Department personnel finished the job by staking the trees against the prevailing winds. The all-island project included the planting of Emerald Queen Maple, Green Spire Linden, Crimson King Maple, Flowering Lilac and Fall Gold Black Ash trees, introduced into the park to eventially provide beauty, and shade to park users.

Young entrepreneurs will learn various aspects of running a business. Topics such as pricing, marketing and customer service are covered at the training event.

KidBiz, developed by the Small Business Development Center at Buffalo State College and Forever Elmwood, was launched in 1996. It was designed to give children in the third through sixth grade the experience and excitement of running their own business. KidBiz made its debut on Grand Island in 1997 as part of the “Plaza Happening.” Mike Heftka and Sue Hillock coordinated the event with over 30 children selling their products along the sidewalks under the canopy of the Grand Island Plaza. Articles sold included old books, toys, crafts, baked goods, and a whole lot more. The young business owners particularly got a sense of running a business as they had to pay a fifty cent rental space fee and received a “license” to sell at the site after the rent was paid.
KidBiz is an excellent opportunity for children to engage in a real-life business experience. For more information, call Sue Hillock at 773-6723 or Mike Heftka at the Small Business Development Center at 878-4030.

    POSTPONED TO JUNE 8
Trees to be Planted in Veterans Park
Volunteer Help Needed For Sesquicentennial Project
One hundred fifty trees will be planted in Veterans Park beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2002 as part of the Town's Sesquicentennial Celebration. “The whole idea is to plant 150 trees as part of the sesquicentennial celebration. They will reach full growth by the Bicentennial in 2052,” said Town Supervisor Peter McMahon. “We will have a Town Park which is filled with beautiful shade trees,” he added. “It’s just possible that the Bicentennial Committee will look at the Veterans Park tree project and do something similiar as a part of their celebration.”
It has been suggested that the idea of a permanent project, which can be enjoyed by future generations, will become part of every future birthday celebration.
The tree planting has been made possible by generous donations from GIBCO-Invitrogen and Erie County Legislator Chuck Swanick. Together, they have contributed two thirds of the project funding. "We still need additional financial support to complete the project," Supervisor McMahon said this week. "You can help by purchasing a tree, as a living gift or memorial. We know that there are a lot of Island residents who either use Veterans Park or who are concerned about the environment and quality of life, who can help make this project a reality," he said. Through the generousity of the sponsors, trees may be purchased for $25. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Grand Island and clearly marked for the "tree project." Later this year, a permanent plaque will be placed in the park to recognize all those who purchased a tree or made a memorial gift.
"We are going to need a lot of help Saturday morning," McMahon said. Those who have purchased trees as gifts or memorials and any volunteers who are interested in improving Veterans Park are welcome. To purchase a tree or help with the planting on June 8, contact Town Hall, 773-9600.
The tree planting has been postponed from May 18 due to wet grounds.

Reg Schopp has gone above and beyond to make things "happen" for next year's celebration. The Island's DAV is also to be thanked as the first group to "step up to the plate" and provide money to generate Sesqui funds. Centennial History - 1952
    By Teddy Linenfelser
Grand Island's Centennial Committee, in February 1952, put together a $7500 budget for their five-day celebration planned for August of that year.
Administrative estimates were for stationery & office supplies, $300, and an Incorporation fee of $125 totaling $425.
A figure of $500 was announced for publicity.
Special Events estimate of $1000 was broken down for $200/parade, $200/prizes, $200/miscellaneous and $400/sport car race.
Proposed figure for the Centennial Pageant, a three-night event, was set at $1000.
Other figures were $300 for power and lights, $150 for a sound styem, $500 for insurance, $1500 for souvenir programs, $400 for housing (tents etc.), $500 for the Centennial Ball held in the Beaver Island Casino, and $500 for miscellaneous. The budget totaled $6725 with an additional 10% added in for a final budget figure of $7500.
Ads for the Souvenir Program Book in 1952 ran from $100 for a full page to a $2 patron ad. An estimated total of 2500 books were to be printed at a total of $2500.
Bill Milliken, Cy Buckley and Bill Infantino met with the committee at a special meeting in the Buffalo Launch Club on Thursday, April 10, 1952, to make plans for the spectacular Grand Prix road race. The group voted to hold the Grand Prix "of a regional nature" on Saturday, August 30, 1952. The race, which is tentatively scheduled to be re-created in 2002, took place along Whitehaven, East River and Harvey Roads. Notes of the road race included the fact that Bridge officials said they could take care of 600 cars per hour, and that approximately 250 men would be needed to man the event.

    Sesqui Planners Expand Events List
    By Teddy Linenfelser
Working under the theme, "We only get to do it once, so let's do it right," Grand Island's Sesquicentennial Celebration committee met Tuesday evening (August 28, 2001) in the Grand Island Memorial Library's community room. About 30 residents including Supervisor Peter McMahon heard various committee heads give updates on their events which include St. Stephen's three-day "neighbor days," a craft show, an art show, chicken barbecue and gospel revival music, youth concert/picnic, black tie ball, Old-Fashioned Field Day for children, band concerts, Grand Prix race re-inactment, classic motorcycle show, antique sports car shows, tractor show, tractor pull, school reunions, time capsole, and VFW events including a WWII display and flyover. An historic pageant, a hands-on Sheep to Shawl" event, major flower show, Historical Society fashion show, fireworks, and Independence Day Parade and road race will also be a part of the 2002 program.
The committee is hoping for members of the community to come forward and take charge of the following, which are still to be firmed up and added to the calendar: antique display, a beard growing contest, bike race, golf tournament, marine event and fishing contest.
Financing the Sesquicentennial celebration is happening slowly with the first offer of funds from the Disabled American Veteranswho put up $1500 for a t-shirt order. The sesqui shirts are now available ($10) at the Giecom.net office, 1871 Whitehaven Road. Town Recreation Director Linda Tufillaro will soon announce another fundraiser, the sale of rubber, yellow duckies which will be dropped into the Niagara River to race down to the Holiday Inn. The owner of the winning duck will win a generous prize and revenues will go into the Sesqui fund.
The Golden Age Club's beautification program to plant daffodil bulbs on Grand Island Blvd. has been advanced by monetary donations from Connections, the Recreation Department, Rotary and Lions Clubs which, to date, nearly covers the cost of the bulbs which will be planted this fall. Much help is needed for the raised flowerbeds. Barb Klock of Girl Scouts of Grand Island expressed interest in having the older Girl Scouts assist in the planting.
The major fundraiser in support of the town's birthday is the historic program book which will be similar to the Centennial 1952 keepsake production with town history and old Island photos, the calendar of events and well wishes from residents and businesses in the area. For more information on being a part of the book, call Jodi Dodd at 773-6789 or refer to this page where ad prices may be found.
The celebration calendar includes but is not limited to dates of June 28-July 7, 2002 with some of the plans scheduled for early June and also for the July 26-28 weekend.
Among the Isle organizations who have come forward in support of the Sesquicentennial are Girl Scouts of Grand Island, East Park Garden Club, Grand Island Historical Society, VFW, Moose Lodge, DAV, Art Society, River Lea Quilters, St. Stephen's Church, Whitehaven Road Baptist Church, Golden Age Club, Chamber of Commerce and Isledegrande.com.
The next planning meeting is scheduled for 7 P.M. Tuesday, September 25, in the Grand Island Memorial Library meeting room. It is not too late to come out to a meeting, see what's going on and to find out how you or your organization may help. For more information, call Sesquicentennial celebration chairman Mike Schneider, 773-3466 or Communications Director Peggy McNulty, 774-8916. Sesquicentennial information will be updated weekly at Isledegrande.com, in the Grand Island PennySaver, the Island Dispatch.

    Sesquicentennial Update
    By Teddy Linenfelser
About 20 Isle residents met with Supervisor Peter A. McMahon Tuesday evening, February 13, 2001 in town hall to discuss ways and means of developing a top notch celebration of the town's 150th birthday in July 2002. So far plans call for a mammoth Independence Day Parade and a fireworks display of major proportions. An historic pageant, a costume ball, a beard growing contest and a T-shirt design contest received favorable comment. Terry Swain and Supervisor McMahon offered monetary donations to be used for prizes for the design artists.
Mike Schneider of Harvey Road spoke on the historical importance of the International Grand Prix Race held on the Island during the Centennial of 1952 and offered to check out the possibility of bringing the vintage race cars back for an exhibition race or car show during the festivities.

A Sidway School Reunion of Classes 1937-1963 has been purposely planned for Saturday, July 6, 2002 to coincide with the Sesquicentennial and it is hoped that this will draw not only classmates from across the nation but entire families who still call Grand Island home. A contingent of Sidway School Reunion committee members attended the meeting.
The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, 2001 in the town hall and individuals as well as representation from all churches, organizations, schools etc. are urged to attend.
