VFW Ladies Sponsor January Souper Soup Night - 2005

   The V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Souper Soup Night will be held Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the post. Serving will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until the soup is gone. The cost is $5 for All The Soup, Salad, and Bread you can eat. Take out quarts will be available. The Soup Night will feature Turkey Noodle Soup, Beef Barley Soup, and Potato Ham Soup.

   Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars hosted today's (Tues., Dec. 7, 2004) Pearl Harbor Day service at the Post. Senior Vice Commander Mike Cutini welcomed a group of 50 veterans, citizens and visitors to a service to remember those military personnel wounded or killed during the early hours on December 7th 1941.





VFW Donates Laptop Computer, Projector To Citizen Corps Council - 2004

Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 recently donated a laptop computer and LCD Projector to the Grand Island Citizen Corps Council. The computer and projector has and will continue to be used to present the "Ready Grand Island" program to town organizations, clubs and associations. In addition to making presentations the computer will be used for training CERT members, maintaining records, the readiness status and emergency contact lists.






Pearl Harbor Service At VFW Post - 2004
   Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 will host a memorial service in observance of the attack on Pearl Harbor at the VFW Post flag pole, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at noon. All citizens are invited to the Post in remembrance of those who perished at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941.

   Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 Ladies Auxiliary presented the proceeds from their Annual Chicken Dinner to the Neighbors Foundation with Robin Swedish (third from right) accepting the check for $800.    During a recent Volunteers Awards Banquet at the Hearthstone Manor, Auxiliary members heard VA Hospital Volunteer Program Manager Mark Francis present information concerning "Welcome Kits" for new hospital patients. The kit contains the essential items veterans need upon entering the hospital for treatment, such as a phone cards, some clothes, toiletry items, Canteen card and greeting cards. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary has donated $500 to help keep this program going.
   The Ladies Auxiliary, under the chairmanship of Liane Dahlberg, is accepting items for "Supporting Our Troops." Over the past year Liane has shipped over 25 packages of non-available and non perishable items to Grand Island troops in the Middle East. Each package weighed about 12 pounds.






Clothing Needed At Veterans Administration Hospital - 2004
   Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 are urging Island residents to help out with the collection of much needed clothing for the residents of the Veterans Administration Hospital. The following is a list of what is especially needed:

    VFW #9149 Ladies Auxiliary To Hold Turkey Raffle, Turkey Sandwich Dinner - 2004


       The Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 will hold a Turkey Raffle and Hot Turkey Sandwich dinner on Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. The menu includes a hot turkey sandwich with homemade gravy, cranberry sauce, chips, and coffee/tea all for only $5.
       The turkey sandwiches will be served from 4-6 p.m. and the turkey raffle is being held at 7 p.m.
       The evening will also feature the music of DJ Clay and the opportunity to take a chance at winning a pizza and chicken wing party for 10, to be enjoyed during a Bills game on the large screen TV at the Post or taken home.






    VFW Ladies Chili Cook-Off Winner - 2004

       Paul Lewis was the first place winner of the VFW #9249 Ladies Auxiliary's annual Chili Cook-Off held on a rainy Saturday, October 2, 2004. Other winners were Debbie Roy (2nd) and B.J. Chapman (3rd).
       Proceeds from the contest, which also included a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction, were donated to "Meaghan's Miracle," for the family of 17-year-old Meaghan Grotz, a cystic fibrosis patient in need of a double lung transplant. Entertainment was provided by the band, "Solid Grease" and DJ Jason Dimit.
       Judges for the contest were Fuccillo representative Mary Dunbar-Daluisio, VFW Commander Tom Roberts, Councilman Dan Robillard, Mark Drexilius, uncle of Megan Grotz, and WGR AM 55 sportscaster Gary Pufpaff.






    VFW Hosts Pig Roast - 2004
       A pig roast dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2004 by the VFW Post #9249 Men's Auxiliary. A limited number of tickets are available by contacting Mark, 773-3058 or at the post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. For further information, call 773-6343.






    VFW Hosts 911 Vigil - 2004
       A Patriot Day vigil for the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States will be hosted by the VFW Post #9249 at the Post flag, 8 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2004. Councilman Richard Crawford will be the guest speaker. All are welcome to attend and pay their respects to the fallen and show support for US troops in harm's way.






    VFW Ladies Announce Annual Chili Cook-Off - 2004
       Members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 will hold their annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday, October 2, 2004 beginning at 1 p.m. Proceeds from the contest, being held at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., will be donated to Meaghan's Miracle. Food, refreshments and, of course, chili will be available.
        The band, "Solid Grease," will perform along with DJ Jason Dimit. A 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction will also be featured.
       Registration at $10 is being held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and participants are asked to use crock pots for entries. Prizes to be awarded are $75 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third place. General admission is $3 and free for those under 12 years.

    National Airborne Day Proclaimed - 2004


    The Grand Island Town Board, in a proclamation read at the Monday, August 16, 2004 meeting, proclaimed August 16 as National Airborne Day in the Town of Grand Island and encouraged its citizens to observe and commemorate this historic event. Accepting the proclamation was Joseph Stefaniak, 507th Parachute Infantry, a D-Day WW II Veteran and Joe Synakowski, a 508th Parachute Infantry, Veteran, WW II. Click for "Proclamation".






    Do You Have A Loved One In The Service? - 2004

       The Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249, Veterans of Foreign Wars are sending care packages to men and women of the armed forces who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and other war zones. The Auxiliary is in need of the addresses of the service men and women in order to forward these packages to them. To submit a name and address, contact Care Package Co-ordinator Liane Dahlberg, 773-7326 or call the Post, 773-6343.

       The Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 will host an evening dance from 6-10 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Post on Grand Island Blvd. Featured will be DJ "East Side Sounds" and the event is open to Veterans and the public at no admission.        The 3rd Annual Dick Pendleton Memorial Super Cruise was held Sunday, August 1, 2004 at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249. The event, chaired by Ed Neiman, was sponsored by Cruise Control, VFW Post #9249, Fuccillo Chevrolet and Gross Plumbing. The attendance was estimated at between 450 and 500 people.

       Honoring Our Veterans & Troops - "A Family Celebration of Freedom" - Family Picnic & Open House - Saturday, August 21, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the VA Medical Center, 3495 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14215. Features will be entertainment, food, children's activities, door prizes and more. A Welcome Home and Thank You to Veterans of All Eras!






    3rd Annual Dick Pendleton Memorial Super Cruise At VFW - 2004

       The 3rd Annual Dick Pendleton Memorial Super Cruise will be held Sunday, August 1, 2004 at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. from noon to 4 p.m.
       The cruise is being sponsored by Cruise Control, VFW Post #9249, Fuccillo Chevrolet and Gross Plumbing. Gates open at 10 a.m. and judging begins at 1 p.m. Food and beverages will be available and there is no admission.
       Over 75 awards will be presented at 4:15 p.m. along with Dash Plaques to the first 125 cars.
       Fuccillo Chevrolet has donated a 1967 Pontiac Tempest to be raffled. The day will also feature a Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle and door prizes as well as the live music of "Big Wheelie and the Hub Caps" from 1-2:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Town Boys & Girls Summer Camp.

    VFW Ladies Auxiliary Donates Refrigerator To Hospice Care Center, Vets Hospital - 2004

    The Ladies Auxiliary of the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper (MOH) Memorial VFW Post 9249, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Grand Island, NY has donated a much needed refrigerator to the new Hospice Center at the Buffalo Veterans Hospital. The 9A Hospice Unit Project will provide quarters for the families of Veterans who are terminally ill. Funds to purchase the refrigerator were the result of the annual corned beef and cabbage dinner and the spaghetti dinner at the Post Canteen. The Veterans of the Post are proud to have such a hard working group of ladies. The efforts of the Ladies Auxiliary on behalf of the veterans are truly appreciated.






    VFW Presents 2004 Scholarships
       Three Grand Island High School seniors were presented scholarships from the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 during graduation ceremonies held Thursday, June 17, 2004 in Kleinhan's Music Hall. Recipients are honor roll students Kelly Knab, Cynthia Czapla and Meghan White. Presentations were made by the VFW Post, the VFW Men's Auxiliary and VFW Ladies Auxiliary.






    VFW Independence Day Picnic - Don't Miss It! - Saturday - July 3, 2004

       The VFW Post 9249's Independence Day Picnic and open house will be held immediately after the town's 9:30 a.m. July 3, 2004 parade. The day will include clams, corn, hot dogs, hamburgs, Italian sausage, beer and soft drinks and music as well as children's events including magic shows, pony rides, a petting zoo and face painting.
       The Erie County Sheriff's newest helicopter will be on display at the VFW Post, weather permitting and Dan McBride will be broadcasing his "Around the Town" program on WXRL 1300 AM from 1-2 p.m.
       Food and beverages will be by pre-purchased ticket only. Numerous ticket booths are to be set up throughout the area and sufficient staffing is planned.
       This is a real All-Island reunion and the place to meet friends from here and those who are in town for the holiday. Mike Cutini is chairman of this year's Independence Day picnic.






    Pre-sale Food/Beverage Tickets Available For VFW Independence Day Picnic - 2004
       June 17, 2004 . . . Members of the VFW Post 9249's Independence Day picnic committee have announced that pre-sale tickets the purchase of food and beverages only at the July 3, 2004 "Open House" event are now available at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., from 8 a.m. to closing. There is no admission to the picnic. The Independence celebration at the Post begins directly after the 9:30 a.m. parade on the Boulevard.
       Plans for this year's annual community picnic have been in the works for months with the usual menu of clams, corn, hot dogs, hamburgs, drinks and music being expanded for 2004. VFW planners have added several children's events including two magic shows, pony rides and face painting. Numerous ticket booths are to be set up throughout the area and sufficient staffing is planned.
       Mike Cutini is chairman of this year's Independence Day picnic.

       Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 are to be commended for their efforts in providing friends and family of Charles N. DeGlopper a fitting remembrance on the 60th anniversary of his death in France during World War II.
       The Memorial Service took place Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Maple Grove Cemetery where Charles was buried in June 1948. Rev. James Lange, Trinity UM Church, gave the invocation and benediction. Kristine DeGlopper, in a tribute to Charles, reminded all in attendance of what he may have done in his life, had he survived the war 60 years ago. The Charles N. DeGlopper Post #9249 gave a rifle salute and taps was played by Grand Island High School musicians Kevin Laurendi and Joseph Orsilits.
       PFC DeGlopper was the son of Charles Leonard DeGlopper and Mary Neilans DeGlopper.

DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 Color Guard, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, members of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 1346 Members, and Grand Island Fire Company members.

    Dance To Honor WWII Veterans - 2004
       A dance honoring World War II veterans is being presented by the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the Post Pavilion, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. The dance will feature the music of Count Basie, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Frankie Laine. Refreshments including hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, beer and pop, will be available. Admission is free.




    VFW To Conduct Memorial Day Gravesite Services - 2004

       As part of Memorial Day ceremonies on Grand Island May 31, the honor guard of the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 will conduct gravesite services at the following locations and times:
    • Whitehaven Cemetery, East River Rd. (near Holiday Inn) 7:40-7:50 a.m.
    • Maple Grove Cemetery (resting place of Congressional Medal of Honor winner Charles N. DeGlopper), Stony Point Road near Whitehaven from 7:55 to 8:05 a.m.
    • Staley Cemetery, West River near Staley, 8:15 to 8:25 a.m.
    • Assumption Cemetery, Whitehaven Road near 4th St., 8:30 a.m. to 8:40 a.m.
    • Trinity Cemetery, Whitehaven Road at Old Trinity Church, 8:45 to 8:55 a.m.
    • St. Stephens Cemetery, Baseline Road behind the old St. Stephens Church, 8:55 to 9:10 a.m.
       Times for the cemetery services are approximate and may vary due to weather conditions.
       Following these solemn visits, a ceremony will be held at DeGlopper Park, Grand Island Blvd & Baseline Rd. at 10 a.m. All Islanders are urged to attend to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

       Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct the annual "Buddy Poppy Drive" Thursday, May 27, Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29, 2004 at various locations on Grand Island. The drive is to remind us of the sacrifice made by our comrades in arms and to support the National Home for widows and orphans of deceased veterans. Please "wear your Buddy Poppy" on Memorial Day and attend the services at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Park, Grand Island Blvd. and Baseline Road at 10 a.m., May 31, 2004 (Memorial Day Observed).





    VFW, American Legion, DAV Sponsor Memorial Day Run

       The VFW, DAV and American Legion are once again combining efforts with the Town Recreation Department to sponsor a Memorial Day Run, Saturday, May 29, 2004 in and around Veterans Park. The 2-mile race starts in Veterans Park at the back parking lot and moves south out of the Park, right on Bedell Road, right on Baseline Road, right on Island Park Drive back into the Park, right on Veterans Park Drive and finishes at the parking lot of basketball courts.
       The race begins at 9:30 a.m. For further information, call the Town Recreation office at 773-9680.






    PFC Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Service - 2004

       The Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 will conduct a Memorial Service at 2 p.m Saturday, June 12, 2004 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of PFC Charles N. DeGlopper. The service will be conducted at the Maple Grove Cemetery, on Stony Point Road near Whitehaven Road. Following the service at the cemetery, VFW Post 9249 will host an open house at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. from 3 to 6 p.m.
       A dance honoring World War II veterans is being presented by the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 from 6-10 p.m. on the evening of June 12th at the Post Pavilion. For more information, click

       Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 will host a Cruise Night at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. every Wednesday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting. The weekly event is open to all with music provided and food available. Photos were taken at the first Cruise Night, Wednesday, May 12, 2004.

       The Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service Office (MSO) will be stationed at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 25, 2004. The event is sponsored by Chapter 168, DAV, Grand Island, NY.






    VFW Members Plan Bigger, Better Independence Day Picnic - 2004

       April 29, 2004 . . . With Independence Day 2004 just 10 weeks away, Members of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post #9249 met Monday to begin planning their annual picnic following the town's running race and parade, which will take place on Saturday, July 3, 2004.
       In addition to the regular fare of clams, corn, hot dogs, hamburgs, drinks and music, VFW planners have added two magic shows, pony rides and face painting. According to a spokesman for the group, even more is in the planning stages and will be announced as commitments are completed. New for this year's July 3rd event will be the use of tickets for food, beverages and ride concessions. Numerous ticket booths are to be set up throughout the area and sufficient staffing is planned.
       Mike Cutini is chairman of this year's Independence Day picnic.

    VFW Post 9249 Elects Officers - 2004

       The annual VFW elections were held on April 13, 2004 with the following results: Commander Thomas Roberts, Senior Vice Commander Mike Cutini, Junior Vice Commander Jacques Baillargeon, Quartermaster Dan McMahon, Surgeon Jack Thompson, Judge Advocate Joe Synakowski, Chaplain Michael Rogan and Trustee Dave Clayton. There are several appointed positions which will be filled before the installation of officers in June.






    VFW Ladies Auxiliary Chicken Dinner Announced - 2004

       Members of the VFW Post 9249 Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Chicken Dinner from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004. Price of dinners is $6 for a 1/2 chicken and all the salads you can eat! Desserts are extra and take outs will be available. Music by Sax Man Slim will be featured from 4-8 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation.

    The new "End of Life" rooms at the Veterans Administration Hospital will be the recipient of a very successful and well attended Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner served by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N.     VFW Spaghetti Dinner Draws Crowd Despite Snowy Weather - 2004


    Despite the snowy weather last Saturday (Feb. 21, 2004), the turnout at the Spaghetti Dinner served by the VFW Post 9249 Ladies Auxiliary was wonderful.     VFW Sponsors Eagle Scout of the Year - National Competition - 2004

        The National VFW is sponsoring its 4th annual Eagle Scout of the Year Competition. The Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post 9249 is a local sponsor of this competition. The National award winner will receive a $5000 college scholarship.     VFW Corned Beef And Cabbage Dinner - 2004

       The Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a corned beef and cabbage dinner from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at the post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd. Cost of a dinner is $7 and includes corned beef, cabbage and rye bread. Dessert may be purchased separately. Take-outs will be available.

       When SPC Michael Shanley entered the Charles N. DeGlopper Post 9249 on Monday, January 26, 2004 where he and his wife, Melissa, planned to meet his family and then go out to dinner, he was pleasantly surprised to see upwords of 80 friends and relatives there to give him a very warm welcome home. Commander Mike Cutini presented Mike with a members' cap and shirt and a Certificate of Appreciation "For service to his Country and preserving our freedom in Iraq from the 2nd Day of April 2003 thru the 2nd Day of January 2004." Mike, who served as a tank driver, had a hand in surrounding the area where Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003. Mike's parents, Diana and Steve DeMarco, planned the welcome home reception.

    The Charles N. DeGlopper VFW Post 9249 and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary presented awards to the students who did well in the Voice of Democracy speaking event and the Patriot's Pen event. Mindi Kratz was the top speaker and David McMichael and Elizabeth Rice finished first and second in the writing event. Honorable mention went to Ryan Johnson, Sheree Tamaklo, Dustin Coryn, Emily Thompson, Kelli Aderone, Arlene Wunch and Charlene Meyer. Kelli and Charlene were not available for the pictures. Judges included Chairman Kathleen Blake, Sue McMahon, Mary Patterson, Charlene Woodfine and Donna Briggs.

       The VA Western New York Healthcare System announces the following locations for veterans to apply for their VA photo ID card. The ID card gives veterans medical access at the VA Hospital and other VA benefits.

    VFW Ladies Donate Handmade Lap Robes to VA Hospital - 2004

       The Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Post 9249 presented V.A. Hospital Volunteer Program Manager Mark Frances with 140 fleece lap robes. The ladies made and donated the robes to be distributed to the veterans at the hospital. From left are Jr. Vice President Cindy Bindics, Guard Rosemary Wojick, Mark Frances, President Sam Woodfine and Conductress Mary Becker. The ladies also donated a variety of greeting cards to each veteran to use for staying in touch with their loved ones.






    VFW Spaghetti Dinner - 2004

       The Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold an All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner ($6) from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., Grand Island, NY 14072. Featured will be spaghetti and meatballs, salad and bread. Desserts will be available to complete the meal. Also featured after the dinner will be 50s and 60s music by DJ Richie Murjada from 8-11 p.m.






    VFW Super Soup Night - Jan. 2004

       The Ladies Auxiliary of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Post #9249 Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a Super Soup Nite from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd., Grand Island, NY 14072. The All-You-Can-Eat soup, salad and bread night at $5 will feature turkey noodle, beef barley and cream of ham and potato soups. "Delectable Desserts" will be available at $1/per and $3/variety. Take-out will be available
