"Viceroy & Monarch"- August 2007

Nathan Cook Photo - Click for larger view

Nathan Cook sent these stitched photos of a Viceroy (left side) and Monarch (right side). Both were taken during the week of August 5, 2007 and at a glance, they appear to be the same thing but upon more detailed inspection they turn out to be quite different. Watching them fly further distinguishes them as different - Monarchs do a lot of coasting and gliding, while the Viceroy continually flutters. Monarchs are also 20% larger. At one time it was thought that the Viceroy had, over its evolution, taken on the visual character of the Monarch to stop birds and other predators from eating them. Monarchs were assumed to be bad tasting/poisonous, which has not necessarily proven to be the case in experiments. See http://www.iscid.org/encyclopedia/Monarch_Viceroy_Puzzle for a well written article comparing the two species.
