Mission: Provide emergency assistance, primarily food or financial help (utility bills), for Grand Island residents who find themselves in temporary need. This is accomplished through a strictly volunteer organization, utilizing churches and other organizations to collect and stock an immediate needs food pantry, and raising money through community wide fund drives and special donation arrangements for employees of key Island employers.

Events: A Holiday Season (Christmas) distribution to needy families on G.I. (large food basket, plus toys and gifts for children). This is coordinated with a collection of food and gifts from schools and other organizations, plus special fund raising in the same time frame. During the rest of the year, we help the needy as we hear from their neighbors, friends or from direct phone calls.

Help: The Foundation, for the past 25 years, has been a small nucleus of devoted workers. As we grow older, we greatly need to expand our circle of active helpers and Directors. New blood is needed!

Strengths: Our long experience with charitable helping of the Island's temporarily needy, has given us procedures, expertise and contacts to provide timely, efficient help. With careful attention to confidentiality, and appropriateness of aid, our volunteer staff has developed the trust and confidence of both needy clients and donating public.

Ideas: Coordinate and focus the natural tendency of many groups and organizations who want to do 'Good Works' at the Holiday Season, into an effective all-Island activity.

Neighbors Foundation Lists Donors - Dec. 2010

The Neighbors Foundation is pleased to acknowledge the overwhelming support, both financial and with gifts of food and toys or clothing, which Grand Islanders gave during their recent Share Your Happiness fund drive and Holiday Distribution. Individuals, organizations and businesses made it possible for the Foundation to distribute help to 45 families in the Holiday Season, and still have additional funds and food prepared to help Grand Islanders with emergency needs in the coming months. The non-perishable food collected by school children during December was sufficient that the Foundation was able to supply two large van loads of food to a Buffalo area food pantry that was known to have empty shelves because of their increased client needs. We have included a list of individuals, organizations and businesses who helped and donated to this effort. Those families that we helped probably seem 'invisible' to most in suburban Grand Island, and cannot personally thank all the donors. In the name of all who have been helped, the Foundation thanks all who donated at this Holiday Season.

The donations to the Neighbors Foundation were down a bit this year, but with the help of many, 45 families are going to have a merrier Christmas. Food and gifts were collected from many different donation sites and monetary donations were sent in. The donations were divided between the 45 families and any extra items were placed in the St. Stephens Church pantry for those in need throughout the year.

Neighbors Foundation helps the less fortunate on Grand Island - December 2010

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island is happy to have received the unique donation of boxes of family first aid materials prepared by Eagle Scout candidate, Jon Grenda. The Foundation will use these boxes as part of their annual Holiday distribution of large baskets of food and gifts to help less fortunate families of Grand Island. This tradition has been carried on for 35 years, as the Foundation fulfills its mission of helping those in temporary need on Grand Island. “Grand Island and Western NY have been spared the worst of the foreclosure and depression mess seen elsewhere in the US, but we are seeing increased calls for help, and lesser donations” according to Foundation President, Henry Kammerer. “While we have financial reserves, we have had to dip into them to continue providing emergency, temporary need for some of our neighbors, especially at what is supposed to be a happy time of year.”
To replenish its reserves, the Foundation invites Island residents to "Share Your Happiness" by making a tax deductible donation to the Neighbors Foundation, mailing it to P.O. Box 155, Grand Island NY 14072. With an all-volunteer organization, the Foundation can assure Island residents that a maximum amount of their donation goes to help those in emergency need on Grand Island. The names of donors will be displayed in the Holiday editions of the Grand Island PennySaver and the www.IsledeGrande.com web newspaper. Donors who wish to remain anonymous, can certainly request that.
Anyone wishing to donate new, unused toys or similar gifts, and new, unused outerwear for youth to teens may bring them to the Town Recreation Dept. office at the Nike Base, Whitehaven Rd. (from 9 AM to 3 PM, and before Dec. 6). According to Henry Kammerer: “For our families with teens and pre-teens, it would be great to have toiletries, lip balm, hairbrushes, combs; we may not think of them as gifts, but they are much appreciated”. For further information on these donations, residents may call Linda Tufillaro, Town Rec. Dept. Supervisor, at 773-9680.
Many Island organizations join this effort. The Grand Island schools will have a canned food drive during December, sorting of that food will be done by the High School DECA Club. Other groups and businesses are also donating food. The Knights of Columbus are again donating the use of their hall for sorting and distribution of the large quantity of food donated to this project. In past years over 60 families have been helped.

Neighbors Foundation Provides Gifts To 62 Families - Dec. 2009

2009: A tough year, but Grand Island came through for its neighbors!
The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island is proud to have helped the people of Grand Island provide food and gift baskets to 62 Island families who had temporary need this Holiday Season. None of us can individually solve the difficulties for some of our neighbors. However, contributions by individuals, groups and companies, food and clothing or toy gifts by school children, groups and fellow Islanders, combined with hard work by the great High School students from the DECA and Interact Clubs, (and many others), allowed the Neighbors Foundation to help our neighbors. We thank everyone who helped in any way. Those who were helped cannot speak for themselves, but we know they also thank you for your thoughts. May 2010 be a better year for all of us! Henry G. Neighbors Foundation Provides Gifts To 62 Families - Dec. 2009

Sixty-two families were helped by the Neighbors Foundation during the Foundation's 2009 Holiday Food/Gift Distribution, hosted on Dec. 17th by members of the Knights of Columbus at their hall for the fourth consecutive year. The distribution was the result of a great amount of effort and contribution from our Grand Island neighbors. Twenty-five students from the High School DECA Club helped sort and prepare 60 baskets of food from the food donated by students from all the schools, additional food donated by Emerson Controls and other Island groups, bags of potatoes, donated cookies and even donated chicken wing hot sauce. Tops Market provided discounted turkeys and hams, Islanders had also donated several turkeys, to make the feature of the food baskets. The baskets were supplemented with Tops Gift Cards for perishable food, made possible by a large set of donations from both individuals, groups and businesses to the Neighbors Foundation's 'Share Your Happiness' fund drive. In the same way Island groups such as Trinity Church Women's Circle, the Golden Age Center and many individuals donated gifts and clothing for the 85 children involved. This all came together as a very successful distribution, the 32nd time the Neighbors Foundation has been able to organize the good intentions of all Grand Islanders to help those less fortunate on Grand Island.

Neighbors Foundation Helps Less Fortunate on Grand Island - Nov. 2009

At the Holiday Season, the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island makes a special effort to help less fortunate families of Grand Island with large baskets of food, and gifts for any children involved. This tradition has been carried on for 35 years, as the Foundation fulfills its mission of helping those in temporary need on Grand Island. In reviewing Foundation activity in recent months, Henry Kammerer, president, said: “Even though news media say that Western NY has suffered less in this recession than other areas, we have seen increased calls for our help. We cannot support anyone continuously and we cannot stop overwhelming cases such as foreclosures; we stand ready and able to help with the emergency or temporary need that some of our neighbors have, especially at what is supposed to be a happy time of year.”

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island is proud, yet somewhat distressed, to report that we have distributed food and gift baskets to more Island families (65) than ever before in our 35 years of service. These are families in temporary need this Holiday Season. It is obvious that the current economic troubles of the area, and entire nation, have increased the difficulties for some of our neighbors. Generous financial contributions by over 150 individuals, groups and companies; food and clothing or toy gifts by almost 100 people and groups, and hard work by many people, especially the great High School students from the DECA and Interact Clubs, made it all possible. The Foundation has been the go-between that allowed thoughtful people and organizations of Grand Island (and surrounding areas) to help their neighbors. We have included in the Neighbors Foundation page of the Isledegrande.com ‘Island Groups’ a listing of the wonderful people and groups who have helped. On behalf of those who were helped, but cannot speak for themselves, we thank everyone on Grand Island for their support, and trust that 2009 will be better for one and all. Henry G. Kammerer

Neighbors Foundation Prepares For Holiday Season In Midst Of Tough Times - Nov. 2008

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island wants the community to know that we are prepared for the current, tough economic times, but hope that all will rally to help their neighbors. Most should know that the Foundation is an all-volunteer organization that has been ready for 35 years to help Grand Islanders in temporary need, with food and financial aid (primarily utility bills).
The Foundation has preserved its funds carefully, suspecting that hard times were possible. Now, with a greater call for emergency food aid, yet lower donations, we have purchased quantities of those staples most useful for families in emergency need (pasta, spaghetti sauce, ‘hamburger helper’, toiletries). Our pantry is thus well enough stocked for the immediate future. We have been blessed with recent donations from organizations such as K of C and East Park Garden Club, (plus several individuals) to keep our treasury sound, as needs arise for families in financial crisis with utility bills. The GI Ministerium will donate food and funds from their Thanksgiving Service at St Timothy Church on Sunday, Nov. 23 to the Foundation.
As the holiday season approaches, youth in our schools will be asked to donate non-perishable foods and toiletries for our Holiday distribution. We hope families will be generous with that donation – the need is great. The community at large is encouraged to donate to our ‘Share Your Happiness’ fund drive, sending any donations to P.O. Box 155, Grand Island NY 14072.
We believe that this community, by thinking of their neighbors even as they themselves face tougher times, can really be a grand island to live in. The Neighbors Foundation, with community help, will make it so.

For over 30 years the Neighbors Foundation has been making the holidays special for those less fortunate on Grand Island, NY. This year enough gifts, food and toiletries have been collected to ensure that 52 families have a pleasant holiday. All of the Grand Island schools and the New Apostolic Church located on Bedell Road have collected non-perishables and toys. A foundation in Chicago who has representatives who are former Island residents has donated turkeys for all the families. An anonymous donor has donated bags of potatoes. Helping to sort the items on Tuesday, December 18th were students from the Grand Island High School Interact Club and DECA Club. The "Share Your Happiness" fund drive helps stock food and supplies for families in need throughout the year.

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island, this week, distributed food and gift baskets to 50 Island families that have been in temporary need this holiday season. "Although we as Foundation members are proud and happy about what 'we' did, it is not the Foundation itself that made the distribution so successful," said Foundation President Henry G. Kammerer. "It was school children bringing in food cans, Scout groups bringing in toys and 'Shoe Boxes' filled with toiletries, Russer Foods, Tops, Java Shop and Bremmer Sugar Kake donating foods, the Knights of Columbus providing use of their hall, School Maintenance personnel bringing 4000 pounds of food to the Hall, over 30 DECA and Interact students from the high school sorting that food. It was hundreds of Island individuals, organizations and businesses making donations, or also bringing food, toys and other gifts; church and senior citizen groups providing clothing. In other words, it was a tremendous outpouring of support from all parts of this grand Island (and surrounding areas) which allowed the Neighbors Foundation to provide this help," Mr. Kammerer said this week. "On behalf of those who were helped, but cannot speak for themselves, we thank everyone on Grand Island for their support," he said.

Christmas Comes To 50 Island Families Courtesy Of Neighbors Foundation - 2005

Over 50 families were helped with food and gift baskets; students and others gave over 4000 lbs. of food, with other donated food, all sorted by the DECA and Interact Club from Grand Island High School. Other high school students from St. Joe’s & St. Mary’s sorted the toys and gifts. The efforts of a huge number of individuals and organizations gave a most successful Holiday distribution for the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island. Connor Middle School students made and sold food at their International Night, the Ministerium directed their Thanksgiving Service collection to the Neighbors Foundation; these and many others raised over $10,000 for the Foundation. Wegmans Stores donated gift certificates (through the Middle School), John’s Pizza & Subs donated gift certificates, Zonta Club, Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce made major donations. Invitrogen, Russer Foods and Tops made contributions that helped fill the food baskets to help these less fortunate families. Members of the Knights of Columbus were particularly kind in allowing the use of their hall for two days to sort and deliver the baskets, while the Grand Island School District's maintenance staff moved the food there in a snow storm! Once again Grand Islanders showed the real community spirit that is here on Grand Island!
