   Santa arrived at the Town Hall by fire truck on the evening of Saturday, December 12. Santa then joined the singing group, the Snowbelters Quartet, in the lighting of the Christmas tree in the gazebo. Inside the town hall, all the children visited with Santa, played guessing games, collected stickers and snacked on cookies provided by the Grand Island Historical Society. The yearly event is sponsored by the Grand island Recreation Department.

Recreation Dept. Presents Welcome Santa - December 2009

   “Welcome Santa” event - 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, December 12 at the Town Hall and gazebo. Activities are geared for young children toddler to 8 years old. Come visit Santa, play games, crafts, watch seasonal videos with seasonal snacks. A holiday musical performance by the Snowbelters Quartet will welcome Santa and light the Towns official Holiday tree and gazebo. Remember to bring your camera!




Attention Island “Turkey Day” Football Players - November 2009

   Parks & Recreation Department Director Linda Tufillaro announces that temporary football fields will be set up at Island locations for your Thanksgiving Day football games. See

Recreation Dept. Fall/Winter Activities Announced - October 2009

   Parks & Recreation Department Director Linda Tufillaro announces the department's upcoming activities for the Fall/Winter as follows:
   Starting in November - leagues for adult volleyball and basketball will be starting, divisions for men, women and mixed divisions. If interested in entering a team or to play as an individual, contact the Recreation office at 773-9680 or
recreation@grand-island.ny.us for more information.
   Sunday Family Swim - conducted at the High School pool, 1100 Ransom Road Sundays from 12 Noon to 2:45 p.m. Life guards on duty - Children under 14 yrs old must attend with adult supervision on hand. Program starts December 6, 13, 20. A complete schedule will be available at the pool. No fees.

   Snow Sculpture Contest - contest will start at the first snow fall through March 29th - call the Recreation Department at 773-9680, leave your name, address and general location of your sculpture, we will come out to take a photo and enter you in our contest. We accept individual and group projects. Winners will receive an award shortly after the deadline date of March 29, 2010.
   Natural outdoor ice rinks - to be maintained by the Parks maintenance crew as weather conditions allow. Rinks are located at Veterans Park and at East Park Road and Broadway.
   Reality Café - NEW HOURS for the Fall and Winter; 6th & 7th graders are scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6 – 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 6 – 9 p.m. All 8th – 12th grade students are scheduled for Thursdays from 6 – 8 p.m. and Fridays from 6 – 9 p.m. Reality Café located at the Nike Base, 3278 Whitehaven Road, is a supervised area where teens can go and enjoy various activities that include video games, X-box, PS2, Nintendo, DVD movies and skateboard ramps, as weather allows. Photo ID and sign in/out is required.
   A reminder to all - when schools close due to poor weather conditions or emergencies, the recreation activities will be cancelled. Programs and times are subject to change due to attendance, staffing and weather conditions. For confirmation, call the Parks & Recreation Dept. at 773-9680 - evenings and weekends 465-8370.    "Residents are asked to keep their sidewalks clear of snow and ice during the winter months. Snowmobiles are restricted to marked trails," Mrs. Tufillaro said.




National Night Out Beats The Rain - August 2009

   The Island's “National Night Out,” held Tuesday evening, August 4 in the Marion Klingel Town Common area on Whitehaven Road went off without a hitch and was enjoyed by the young and old even though the skies were overcast and it looked like rain. Rock group, Reflection, provided "oldies" as well as other music to the delight of the crowd. For photos by Mary Stewart, see

• Shiela Foss and Patricia Burg, from the Erie County SPCA of Tonawanda, were on hand to promote the work of the organization.
• Nathan Wallens got a chance to get behind the wheel of one of the police patrol cars.
• A popcorn sale was sponsored by the Zonta Club. Pictured are Zonta members Barbara Nowakowski, Sybil Kennedy and Andrea Moreau.
• Jennifer Pullano and Danielle SolurI, Grand Island Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary members, serve up hot dogs at the Auxilary booth. Also pictured with the ladies is Michael Brown.
• Overcast skies and a slight chance of rain didn't stop hearty Islanders from attending this year's National Night Out.
• Jaxon Montana and Hunter Schmidt are pictured showing off two of the "balloon sculptures" created by one of the participants. Also pictured is Samantha Banas.




National Night Out - August 4, 2009

   The Grand Island Parks & Recreation Department will conduct “National Night Out” on Tuesday, August 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Marion Klingel Town Common area. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention, generate support and participation in local anticrime programs and strengthen spirit and police-community relationships. Free entertainment will be provided by “Reflector,” a classic rock band. Law enforcement vehicles from the State Police, Erie County Sheriffs, GI Police, US Border Patrol and fire equipment from the GI Fire Company will be on display. Children’s activities will include kan-jam, table games and crafts and games and free child ID kits. An outdoor movie sponsored by the GI Rotary Club, hot dog sale by the Grand Island FireCompany Ladies Auxiliary and a pop-corn sale sponsored by Zonta will also be featured. All are welcome, bring the entire family.

Grand Island Fire In the Sky 2009

   Press Release, Town of Grand Island, NY . . .June 25, 2009
Come celebrate July 4th by enjoying one of the largest aerial fireworks displays in Western New York. This year’s display is scheduled for dusk on Saturday, July 4 at Martin’s Fantasy Island. Martin’s Fantasy Island will be the only place to view the ground display. Beginning at 5 p.m., Grand Island residents may gain free admission to the park with photo identification and proof of Grand Island residency (adults).
    “The 2009 display promises to be spectacular,” said Supervisor Peter McMahon.
   Important Notes:
      Parking Restrictions
No parking along Grand Island Boulevard between Whitehaven Road and KOA campground (2570 GI Blvd.);
No parking along Whitehaven between Trinity Church (2100 Whitehaven) and West Island Trucking (2449 Whitehaven);
No parking along the entirety of Alvin Road, from Baseline Rd. to Whitehaven;
Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and towed.
      Thruway Ramp Closure
The on-ramp from Whitehaven to the I-190 northbound will be closed from approximately 9:00 p.m. until the end of the fireworks display.
      Rain Date - Sunday, July 5 at dusk.

Kan-Jam Competition - Summer 2009

   Kan-Jam - The Slammin' Jammin' Disc Tossin' Game - A Kan-Jam tournament will take place 12 noon Sunday, July 12, 2009 in Veterans Park. Rain date: Sunday, July 19th. Competition starts at 1 p.m. Age groups are 11-15 and 16-19 and teams may be all boys, all girls, or a mix of both. Awards will be given at conclusion to top teams. The event is sponsored by the Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department.
