By Kris Christensen
Led by National Football League prospect Brett Kern, many former Grand Island High School football players have built on their high school success at the college level.
In the fall of 2003, many longtime observers of high school football considered Kern to be the best punting prospect ever to come out of Western New York when he committed to perennial Mid American Conference contender Toledo. Kern was first team All-Western New York and first team All-New York State on the Vikings 2003 sectional championship team and remains the only Viking ever to play in the Governor’s Bowl, a high school all-star game pitting New York against New Jersey at the United States Military Academy. While Kern’s team got off to a rough start at home last Saturday against Purdue from the Big Ten, losing 52-24, the punter stood out as bright spot for the Rockets with eight punts for a 49.2 yard average, including five punts downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. Kern will finally get a chance to play at home when Toledo travels to the University at Buffalo for an October 13 contest. Several pro scouting resources consider Kern to be among Toledo’s top two or three pro prospects.
Three of Kern’s classmates from Grand Island have enjoyed fine careers on the football field and in the classroom at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. Senior Tom Rayhill, a three-year starter at middle linebacker will serve as a captain for the Engineers.
“Tom is a very smart player who gets our defense set,” said RPI head coach Joe King, “he is a really important part of our overall scheme.”
While Rayhill starts on defense and handles the critical long-snapping duties, former Viking all-state lineman Doug Ingraham “will start somewhere” according to King and senior center Dave Dillen is expected to start in the season opener against Endicott College. Ingraham played offensive tackle as a freshman before moving to defensive tackle his sophomore and junior seasons. Depth on the defensive line and inexperience on the offensive line have necessitated Ingraham’s likely move back to offense. Despite only one varsity start under his belt, King was impressed with Dillen’s “great off-season.”
The Engineers were 7-3 in 2006 and have enjoyed 15 straight winning seasons. All three former Vikings are on the Dean’s List at the school.
Down I-90, coach Rocco Salamone is expecting big things out of former All-Western New York lineman Justin King, a sophomore defensive tackle at Brockport State. King, a standout on Grand Island’s last two sectional championship teams and a member of the 2006-07 Atlantic Central Football Conference All-Academic Team, is joined at Brockport by Scott Kaniecki, a senior wide receiver who is best remembered by Viking fans for breaking open the 2003 Section VI Championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium with a long touchdown reception that gave Grand Island a 27-6 lead early in the third quarter.
Eric Hajnos, a standout on Grand Island’s 2004 team is expected to start at wide receiver for Cortland State. Matt Guidotti, a key member of Grand Island’s 2005 sectional championship team is expected to start at fullback for Alfred University. James Rayhill, an all-state performer at defensive end for the Vikings in 2006 and the defensive MVP of the 2005 sectional championship team is a freshman outside linebacker at Hobart. He will have a chance to square off against his brother on September 22 at Hobart.

The Grand Island girls 14 and under softball team is getting used to winning…a lot! The Vipers won their second consecutive tournament by taking the Amherst Mel Ott event going 4 and 1. In an ironic twist, the Vipers downed the Grand Island Vikings 6-3 in the “All G.I.” final. The Vipers rode the strong pitching of Emma Henderson and Susan Winklestein. Shortstop Kate Boutet’s two-run double put the Vipers ahead early and Henderson pitched a near perfect game in shutting down the Vikings. Winklestein had pitched the semi final game against Elma to advance to the final. The very next night the Vipers played in their WNY Metro League Championship game at Clarence and claimed the title downing the Red Devils in a thrilling 9-7 game that was marred by constant rain. Great defense by catcher Emily Jones and outfielders Anna Playfair and Kayleigh Deuser coupled with Boutet’s two big hits led the attack. With two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 7th, Korin Franz, playing third base, snared the potential game tying hit to end the game. The Vipers played the game shorthanded with 4 starters out. Coach Joe Henderson credits a total team effort in claiming the Vipers' first league title. The Vipers will be hoping to continue their winning ways as they travel to Sandusky, Ohio for the Cedar Point Tournament.

Soccer Club U-14 Boys To Host Annual Spaghetti Dinner - 2007

The Northtown Soccer Club U-14 Boys team, 2005 League Champions, will host the third annual spaghetti dinner fundraising event on Friday, March 23, 2007 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Whitehaven Road. There will be two seatings 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dinner will feature fresh salad with rolls and butter, pasta with meatballs, and dessert. The event will benefit the team's entry in several tournaments in and around New York State during the season staring in May and finishing in August.
"We feel, as a team, that success is the result of hard work. However, it is always appreciated when we receive outside help to reach our goals, whether it be training with former professional soccer players, or help from community businesses," a spokesman for the team said this week.
Island businesses may sponsor a table at the dinner whereby their name will be displayed to the patrons (names highlighted on the centerpiece). The Northtown Soccer Club expects to serve over 300 dinners. Suggested donation for sponsorship is $25 per table and donations received by March 19, 2007 would be most appreciated.
Checks are to be made payable to: Northtowns Warriors and mailed to:
Todd Lee
