River Lea
The Grand Island Historical Society restored and maintains the farm house
known as River Lea and located in Beaver Island State Park.
It was built on Lewis F. Allen's property, Allenton Farms,
by his son, W. Cleveland Allen. Today it is owned by New York State.

Gates at River Lea were added to the property
by James W. Tillinghast at the turn of the century.
The gates were removed when NYS took the property in the
late 1950s, and were returned to the property in 2005. See "Gates Returned."

See "Flapper Fashions" Roaring Twenties Show for more photos.

The audience at River Lea got to step back in time when a fashion show, Flapper Fashions, was presented by the Grand island Historical Society during the Holiday Luncheons the week of December 2nd. The focus was on the 1920s.
A brides maid dress of silk, net and metallic embellishment, modeled by Carolyn Doebert, was worn in her mother-in-law's wedding in the early 1920s.
A flapper style chiffon and lace wedding dress from 1926 for the Hendrick-Arch wedding was modeled by Jennifer Long.
A true flapper dress of black net and lace was shown off by Audra Wynne.
Other models were Mary Burngasser in a heavily black beaded flapper dress, and Suzanne Grafinger who modeled an elaborate evening gown and red velvet opera coat.
Both the history of the era and clothing were received with enthusiasm.
Fashion show chairman Maggie Gushue closed the show with a 1930s dress as a teaser for the Society's next fashion show.

An Historical Acquisition For River Lea - 2008

Click photo for larger view

When Zora and Edward Hussey owned River Lea, two well known artists, James Montanari and Eugene M. Dyczkowski, also lived there. The Husseys supported the artists financially and with housing so they could continue to pursue their successful careers.
Dyczkowski had many experiences in his career. He enjoyed creating character studies as well as portrait painting. In 1933, he became assistant director at Albright Art Gallery and teacher at Buffalo Art Institute. In 1938, he produced two panels for the entry foyer at Burgard Vocational High School, entitled "Industrial Activities," and "Cultural Activities."
In 1939, he painted several murals including the one for the Officers Club at Fort Niagara, "Defending Forts," scenes of warfare from 16th to 20th century.
Recently, an original signed painting by Dyczkowski came up for sale. Fortunately, Andrea Switzer, had the foresight to purchase the painting. She realized the value of an original signed painting by Dyczkowski and of the historical significance it would bring to Grand Island and the Grand Island Historical Society.
The painting was recently donated to the Grand Island Historical Society in memory of Andrea Switzer (nee Duffy) by Michael Duffy, Sharon Moss and Jane Duffy.
A more detailed account of Eugene M. Dyczkowski's life may be found in the Western N.Y. Heritage Magazine - Winter 2004.

Historical Society To Present
"History of Mordecai Noah & City Of Ararat" - 2008
Prestigious Speaker Is March 6th Guest
By Teddy Linenfelser

Mordecai Noah proposed the City of Ararat, a Jewish refuge, on a large tract of land on Grand Island, NY and planned a major dedication of its marker, the Ararat Stone, in September 1825.

Mordecai M. Noah

Town Clerk Elsie E. Stamler is shown with the Ararat Stone (top of first photo), shortly after it was returned to Grand Island in 1965 and placed in the lower hall of the town hall. Its move to Grand Island was under the auspices of the Grand Island Historical Society. It should be noted that the stone was placed in the town's second town hall building, the former School #9.
(right) A better view of the Ararat Stone

(left) The photo was taken in 1965 at the dedication of the cornerstone for the proposed City of Ararat, a Jewish refuge. The ceremony took place in front of St. Stephen's Church barn on Baseline Road. From left are Historical Society President Barry Burnett, Monsignor Richard Graber of St. Stephen Church, Supervisor Raymond P. Griffin, Town Historian Marion Klingel and an unidentified representative of the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society.
(right) Town Board members posed with the Ararat stone upon its return in March 1989.

The Grand Island Historical Society will feature Ed Adamczyk, Town Historian of Kenmore, NY, who will give an extensive history of Mordecai Manuel Noah and his proposed City of Ararat, a city for oppressed Jews worldwide. The program meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Historic Trinity Church, 2100 Whitehaven Road.
Mordecai Noah had a lofty career that included playwright, journalist, and well-known politician as well as a leader in the Jewish community. He also held the positions of sheriff of New York City, Justice of New York City's Court of General Sessions, US Consul to the Kingdom of Tunis, and surveyor of the Port of New York.
Figures for the weight of the Ararat stone, and acreage purchased for the City of Ararat vary from article to article. Several reviews on the subject agree that there is no evidence that Noah owned any land or even set foot on Grand Island, NY.
Mr. Adamczyk will have much more to tell about this piece of Grand Island, NY history.
The following is a timeline that briefly relates where the Ararat stone was located and answers the question, "Why isn't it here on Grand Island?"

1818 - There were 3000 Jews living in the United States.

1820 - Mordecai Noah attempted to buy Grand Island from the State of New York.

1825 - Mordecai Manuel Noah, a self-proclaimed Jewish leader, persuaded a close friend, Samuel Leggett, to purchase 2255 acres of Grand Island, New York as a residence for a community of persons professing the Jewish religion. The purchase price in one report was $9,785. The City was to be named Ararat after the mountain on which Noah's Ark landed after the great flood. (some of this from the Christian Register, Boston, Massachusetts, June 11, 1825 and June 18, 1825)

1825 - (From a Buffalo News article, March 1989) The dedication of a 400-pound cornerstone of a 2255-acre visionary city on Grand Island for oppressed Jews worldwide, took place at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Buffalo, New York in September 1825. The stone was not moved to Grand Island at that time due to the inadequacy of transportation to Grand Island. Noah's plans collapsed soon after the dedication of the cornerstone, due to his inability to obtain enough support from prominent American Jews. Foreign Jews also denounced his authority, especially Noah's plans to tax all Jews to pay for the city.

1834 - General Peter B. Porter who had possession of the stone, gave the stone to Lewis F. Allen who wanted it for the Whitehaven Settlement where it was enjoyed by passers-by traveling the Niagara by river steamer. Sometime after that, the stone was moved to the Lewis F. Allen farm where River Lea is located.

1850 - The stone, also located on the "Baxter Farm" on Grand Island in 1850, was moved to several locations including four on Grand Island.

1851 - Mordecai Manuel Noah died on March 22, 1851.

1864 - Ararat Stone moved to Sheenwater on West River and then back to Porter Avenue, Buffalo, property that Lewis F. Allen had purchased.

1866 - Lewis F. Allen donated the Ararat Stone to the Buffalo Historical Society where it continued to gather dust in the building's basement until loaned to the Grand Island Historical Society in 1965 and placed on view in the Town Hall.

1866 - Historian Lewis F. Allen, speaking at the Buffalo Historical Society, contended that Maj. Noah "never owned an acre, never founded a city, nor laid a cornerstone there."

1964 - The Grand Island Historical Society Marker Committee co-sponsored an historic marker for the proposed site of Mordecai M. Noah's attempt to establish a City of Refuge for the Jews of the world in 1825. Also sponsoring the plaque was the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society. The Grand Island Historical Society helped defray the cost of $122.50 for the plaque.

1965 - According to Grand Island Historical Society Director Milton K. Pitts, "the Buffalo Society will loan us the stone on a year to year basis, and it must attract an audience of 1000 persons annually if the Island Society is to retain it." The Ararat Stone was moved to Grand Island, New York in July 1965.

1965 - A dedication of the cornerstone (Ararat Stone) was held on May 23, 1965 in front of St. Stephen's Barn on Baseline Road. (See photo above)

1987 - In 1987 the stone was loaned to the Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

1989 - A local paper reported in February 1989 that the Ararat Stone would be returned to Grand Island after the base of the 300-pound artifact was repaired. An agreement by the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society was reached to lend the artifact to the town of Grand Island for at least a year. The stone was delivered to the town hall on Tuesday, March 14, 1989 by the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.

1994 - The Ararat Stone was returned to the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society where it remains on exhibit.

2001-2002 - Supervisor Peter A. McMahon tried in vain to have the Ararat Stone brought back to Grand Island for the town's celebration of its 150th birthday.

2008 - The stone remains in the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society as part of the exhibit, "Neighbors: the People of Erie County," as it has been for about 14 years.

After 99 years collecting dust in the basement of the Buffalo Historical Building, the Ararat Stone was thrust into the limelight due to Grand Island's request to take possession of the marker. Only then did the Buffalo Society begin to appreciate the historical value of the Ararat Stone.

The March 6th meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

The Grand Island Historical Society hosted a slide presentation on Thursday, September 27th by Don Dunifon of Columbus, Ohio, who spent much time at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park in the 1950s. He stayed with friends of his parents, Thelma and David Roggenkemper, who rented the front or original part of River Lea from Zora Hussey. No longer only a summer resident, Mrs. Hussey at that time lived in the back section of the house. Slides included River Lea during all seasons of the year along with the beautiful gardens and outbuildings no longer there.
Don's overview of personalities included resident artists Eugene "Dick" Dyczkowski and James Montanari, and Mrs. Hussey whose husband, Edward, bought the farm house and property for her as a gift in 1909 when she was 23 years old.
Dunifon also visited River Lea on Tuesday evening, September 25th when interviewed by Society member Suzanne Grafinger from a prepared list of questions during a recording session provided by members Jeff and Mary Cooke. It was at this time that Mr. Dunifon presented gifts of two James Montanari paintings and a sterling silver champagne bucket engraved with Edward Hussey's initials.
Society hostesses Joyce Neill, Carolyn Doebert and Sharon Nichols, presented a dessert buffet following the Thursday evening event.

The second annual "Paddles Up Niagara" along the south eastern shores of Grand Island on Saturday, July 28, 2007 nearly doubled its participants from the first event held in 2006. Promoted by the Niagara River Greenway Commission (NRGC), Paddles Up 2007 drew a hot and beautiful day with little wind creating nearly ideal paddling conditions. Most of those participating, took advantage of the Grand Island Historic Society's post-paddle picnic buffet catered at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park by McMahon's Family Restaurant. Historical Society docents were on hand inside their headquarters, The Villa at River Lea for tours throughout the day.
Niagara River Greenway Commissioner and Event Chairman Paul Leuchner reported that 240 people in 203 kayaks and canoes had entered the river paddling event, an increase of 75% over last year. Leuchner also noted that more than 500 people had circulated through the various displays and safety demonstrations that were scheduled during the event. The youngest paddler was just nine years old while the most senior paddler was 83. The event drew participants from all over the region as well as neighboring states, the Province of Ontario and the country of France.
The reaction of the public to the event was universally positive and the Niagara River Greenway Commission plans to make the event even bigger and better next year. Many commented that they had enjoyed hours of fun filled recreation on the Niagara River without having to burn a drop of gasoline. Others who participated stated that a quiet paddle on the Niagara River was a fantastic stress reliever and good way to get a physical workout. Planning for that event is already underway.
The course selected for this year's paddling event was designed to acquaint people with the scenic beauty of the Niagara River and to showcase some of the significant ecological resources that make the river so valuable. Paddlers had an opportunity to see river shallows teeming with fish, wetlands with many flowering species of plants and wading birds, flooded forests and public access areas established for the exclusive use of paddlesports enthusiasts."

Historical Society Members' Memories Recorded - 2006

A small group of Grand Island Historical Society members gathered at the Society's headquarters, River Lea in Beaver Island State Park, on Saturday, August 5, 2006 for the purpose of recording the memories of four native Islanders, all in their 80s.
Suzanne Grafinger served as the moderator and Harvey and Catherine Killian Long, Betty Forsythe Killian and Shirley Kreger Luther took turns answering a prepared list of questions about their lives on Grand Island, N.Y.
All four residents attended the one-room schools across the Island. Farming was a large part of their lives. Betty Killian reminisced about her father becoming disabled and how she and her mother would go with him to assist with the often times strenuous farm work.
When asked what they did on Sundays years ago, all replied that they would attend Sunday school and then the regular service at Trinity Church and once home, would have company, including relatives from Buffalo who would stay for the main meal.
The huge harvest picnics often held at Edgewater Park were a hot topic among the foursome, with all agreeing that the yearly occasion always turned into a family reunion with everyone from the Tonawanda and Buffalo area coming over by ferry to join their Island relations.
Catherine Killian was the only one who had indoor bathroom facilities when she was a child and that was only while her family lived in the former John Nice home in the area that is now the Holiday Inn.
Harvey Long remembers where he was when he first heard that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. "I was in the Sidway School gym playing basketball when one of our friends came in with the news," he said. Harvey was drafted into the Army several months later. It was a time of not only unlocked doors, but a time when it was not so amazing to have the youngsters given a key to the only school on the Island so they could go in and play basketball, use the showers, and lock up after themselves.
Shirley related how she and Catherine and two other young women started "The Islander" newspaper that they sent to all troops from Grand Island during the war, keeping them abreast of where their buddies were from time to time along with community news about the Island. The girls wrote it, printed it and addressed it for several years until the war ended.
All agreed that their lives changed with the opening of the Grand Island bridges on each end of the Island in 1935, and again six years later with the nation entering WWII.
The technical operation of recording the project was handled by Jeff and Mary Cooke. Those interested in being a possible candidate for another recording of Island memories are asked to call Sharon Nichols at 773-2421.

The Grand Island Historical Society's "Fourth Grade Tours" around Grand Island by bus and a visit to River Lea, the society's headquarters, are taking place as usual this month. This is due to Historical Society members voting to pay a total of $600 for the transportation of the 4th grade classes at St. Stephen School, Kaegebein School and Huth Road Elementary School. School District budget constraints made it impossible for the district to provide the necessary transportation as was the policy in the past.
It is hoped that the community has appreciated the fact that the 4th grade tours were not interrupted this year and that perhaps local organizations will come forward with small (or large) cash donations for the Historical Society. Several have already made the commitment.
