every bird he has seen on Grand Island. "So far, I have documented 54 species
(and counting). Most photos are taken from my bicycle in Buckhorn State Park," he said

"Poison Ivy" - May 2009

   This poison ivy photo by Gary McDannell was taken in Buckhorn State Park on Friday, May 8, 2009. The leaves of the plant are said to be "polymorphic," which means that an inordinate variety of shapes of leaves will be observed. However, the leaves will normally be a shinny green color, and grouped in threes. Poison Ivy is found everywhere on Grand Island, and especially adjacent to the bike path leading to Beaver Island State Park. It's also found in abundance in Buckhorn State Park.

"Great Blue Heron" - May 2009

   Gary McDannell took this photo of a Great Blue Heron on Friday afternoon, May 8, 2009. The bird was standing atop of one of the artificial islands at the East River Marsh Project. This species can attain a height of 4 feet, and their numbers have increased dramatically in this area over the past decade. "If you look over at Motor Boat Island from the shoreline of the river in Beaver Island State Park you will see dark clumps in the branches of the trees on the island. These are Blue Heron nests (AKA heron rookerie), and there are quite a few of them on Motor Boat Island."

   Kim Ludwig writes, "My sister in law, Allison Ludwig and I went snowmobiling around the Island last Friday night (Feb. 6, 2009)
and then to dinner. How many towns can you ride beautiful trails, check out the scenery of the Niagara River ....
close up.... and then park and go into a restaurant for dinner... all on a snowmobile!
We got out just in time before that gorgeous snow melted!!
