"Storm Waters" - August 2009

Emily Dahlstrom Photos - Click for larger view

Emily Dahlstrom took these photos at 5 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2009 from her front yard looking out over the East River. High winds and a hard driving rain hit the Island about 7 p.m. Sunday when a party tent was ripped down and several of the metal poles on the Dahlstrom property were bent. This was nothing compared to the monster floods in and around Silver Creek and Gowanda, NY. "There was a brown stripe of water running down the Niagara on the opposite shore. It was a muddy mix of water from the storm the previous day," Emily said.

"Bugs" - August 2009

Julie Greco Photos - Click for larger view

Julie Greco took these photos on August 6, 2009 in her yard on West River Road, and her husband, Frank, wrote the following. "Several days ago I noticed something I never saw before. Hundreds of an unknown insect on our White Pine tree in roughly 6-inch circles. Last night on the Animal channel I saw something similar on "Wild Russia" and the narrator said the insects come to mate and usually are all dead in up to 7 days. Today I noticed that my original 8 circles of insects were down to 2 left. They all left about 4 days after first appearing. So I am hoping that they were there to mate only and not to suck the sap and kill the tree."

"Barn Swallows" - August 2009

Frank F. Greco Photo - Click for larger view

Frank writes, "Over the last several years we on the West River have been losing our
Purple Martins as the population of Sand Flies decreased. This year I haven't even seen one
Purple Martin. Gradually they have been replaced by Barn Swallows, but as before the Barn Swallows'
newborns line up behind my house in the same place as the Purple Martin did and wait to fatten
up so they can fly to South America for the winter in a couple of weeks."
