Sidway School Reunion, A Grand Time - 2008

   Charlotte Sidway School opened in February 1937 and its first 8th grade graduated in June of that year. That class and those through 1963, gathered at the Holiday Inn Grand Island on Saturday, July 5, 2008 for a school reunion. The students, with the exception of the 1963 class, had to leave the Island for high school. Grand Island High School opened in September 1963.
   Approximately 230 former students and friends attended the afternoon event where they rekindled memories and made new ones.
   Supervisor Peter McMahon, Sidway Class of 1957, served as emcee as he has done for the 1990, 1996 and 2002 Sidway reunions.
   Information on ordering photos will follow.

   It's time to make your reservations for the July 5, 2008 reunion. The mail has been steadily coming in and we are getting excited as we look forward to celebrating all the good times we shared during our years at Charlotte Sidway School, Grand Island, New York.
   Many out-of-town classmates are investing a great deal of money and time to come home to see "YOU." Please don't disappoint them. If you or someone you know hasn't received an invitation, please let us know. Remember, this is a casual event and summer picnic attire is the rule. For those arriving on the Island early, consider attending the parade on Grand Island Blvd. and Jazz On The River at the Holiday Inn on Friday, July 4.

Lots To Do July 4th Weekend

   The Sidway School Reunion Committee announces that reservations are beginning to come in on a regular basis and the committee thanks those classmates for making early reservations for the Saturday, July 5, 2008 reunion being held at the Holiday Inn Grand Island. If you are planning on being a part of this gala event, you are urged to fill out the form and send your check immediately.
   A full Independence Day of Island activities will precede the reunion including the Island's Independence Day parade on Grand Island Blvd. beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, following the road race; the VFW's community picnic immediately after the parade; and Jazz on the River on the waterfront at the Holiday Inn featuring a good sized tent with tables, with food and beverages available outside.

   Sidway Reunion planners seem to be having all the fun. As a group, we experience several exciting moments throughout the process of finding missing students. We decided to share some of the highlights to keep the spirit and momentum going. There are many surprises online and in the mail everyday from former students and strangers, too. We were recently contacted by a man in Australia trying to locate his sister, a classmate of Sidway. We sent the needed information and hopefully they have connected. Also, a heartwarming flash from the past, a pen-pal from France who contacted us through Isledegrande.com looking to find his Grand Island pen-pal from over 50 years ago! Again, only a few of us get to be thrilled by the wonders of the internet and how special Grand Island is to so many former Islanders
.    The reservations have been steadily coming in but we urge all who have put their invitations in the bill pile to take a moment and get that in the mail. If we do a second mailing, there will be less in the kitty for some wonderful souvenirs and entertainment surprises. It's already February and July 5 is closer that you think. We hope to hear from you.

Sidway School Reunion Meeting Nov. 13 - 2007
   The Charlotte Sidway School reunion committee (classes 1937-63) will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the Holiday Inn Lounge, East River Road, Grand Island, NY. For a reservation form, and more information about the July 5, 2008 reunion, see "www.isledegrande.com/sidway/sidway37-63-2008.htm." The committee is planning a slide show presentation of all classes and all eras. This can only be accomplished by classmates going through their photographs and either scanning them and emailing them to Judy at "jasch427@aol.com" or mailing copies to her at 3127 West River Road, Grand Island, NY 14072. Be sure to include information about the photos.

Sidway School Reunion Meeting Oct. 9 - 2007
   The next planning meeting for the Sidway School reunion (July 5, 2008) will be held Tuesday, October 9 at the Swain residence on Webb Road.
   Invitations have been sent out and some classmates may not have gotten theirs. The job of updating 1500+ addresses is monumental and, of course, there will be mistakes. You can help the committee greatly by emailing "gabbypeg1@aol.com" or "jasch427@aol.com" with your correct address if you did not receive your invitation to the Sidway School reunion being held from 1-6 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the Holiday Inn on Grand Island.
   The Holiday Inn is providing foot stations of all kinds throughout the day. If you are hungry at 1 p.m. there will be food and if you are hungry again at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. or even 5 p.m. there will be more food. Beverages are included in the ticket price of $50 - wine, beer and soft drinks.
   The committee is planning to present a video/DVD focusing on photos of all classes and all eras. Sidway School Reunion Invitations To Be Mailed Next Month - 2007

   The Charlotte Sidway School reunion committee met on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 when over 1500 envelopes were stuffed and readied for mailing. The Sidway grade school reunion that includes those who were a part of 27 classes of 8th or 9th grade graduates (1937-1963) cannot be compared with other school reunions in size and cost of running a nice event. Once the invitations to the July 5, 2008 event are mailed, the committee will look forward to hearing from classmates across the country and across the world.
   The next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Terry Swain's home on Webb Road. New faces show up at each meeting and the committee hopes to have a good turnout for the finishing up of the invitation mailing that evening.

   The Charlotte Sidway School reunion committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, June 26, 2007 at Swain's, 1890 Webb Road. The meeting is open to anyone who was a part of the Sidway School graduating classes 1937-1963. See "Sidway Reunion Reservation Flyer." The flyer will print in two pages.

May 10, 2007 . . .The Charlotte Sidway School reunion committee met Tuesday evening, May 8, resolving details for the July 5, 2008 reunion information flyer. See "Sidway Reunion Reservation Flyer." The flyer will print in two pages.
A dozen members of the Sidway School 8th and 9th grade graduating classes, 1937-1963 attended the meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 5 at 1890 Webb Road.    The Sidway School Reunion Committee has made the decision to hold the 2008 reunion at the Holiday Inn Grand Island on Saturday, July 5, 2008. The cost per person will be $50. Invitations with all pertinent information will be mailed in the spring of 2007. The next planning meeting, open to anyone who attended Sidway School with the graduating classes of 1937 through 1963, will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Terry Swain's residence, 1890 Webb Road.
   The committee would sincerely appreciate donations of start-up funds to be applied to the ticket fee. Checks made out to the Sidway School Reunion Committee may be mailed to Sidway School Reunion, P. O. 24, Grand Island, NY 14072.

   October 5, 2007 . . .A unanimous decision was made to begin planning a Sidway School reunion and a tentative date was set for Saturday, July 5, 2008 when a group of about 20 met in the Grand Island Memorial Library Monday evening, October 2, 2007. The reunion is being geered to the graduating classes of 1937 through 1963 and all who were at any time a part of these classes. The next planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 23, 2007 in the Community Room of the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road (east of Grand Island Blvd.)
