Grand Island School Voting Results - May 2017

    Total budget: $62.6 million (up 2.7 percent)
Yes: 1,078 votes (67.7 percent)
No: 515 votes (32.3 percent)

School board candidates (elect 2):
Susan Marston (i): 752 votes (25.3 percent)
Marcela Hernandez: 224 votes (7.5 percent)
Heath Frisch: 648 votes (21.8 percent)
Jack Burns: 669 votes (22.5 percent)
Ashli Dreher: 684 votes (23.0 percent)

Propositions:
To purchase five buses and two vehicles for a total of $663,470
Yes: 1,017 votes (65.2 percent)
No: 543 votes (34.8 percent)

    A Candidates Night, sponsored by PTA Council, was held on Tuesday, May 9th at the high school. Candidates answered questions written on cards from the audience, gave introductory and closing remarks and mingled with audience members following the formal presentation. See Meet the Candidates Video and Candidate Biographies. The election will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2017, from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. in the Grand Island High School gymnasium.

School District Public Notice - April 2017

   LEGAL NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Grand Island Central School District will hold a public hearing on the District's proposed Smart Schools Bond Act Preliminary Investment Plan, pursuant to The Smart Schools Bond Act (SSBA) of 2014, at the Grand Island High School PD Room 137, 1100 Ransom Road, Grand Island, New York, on the 17th day of May, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The District's proposed Smart Schools Bond Act Preliminary Investment Plan is available on the District website at www.grandislandschools.org and community members are welcomed to submit comments on the proposed Plan via email to janetschuster@grandislandschools.org prior to the Public Hearing.

School District Absentee Ballot - April 2017

    On Tuesday, May 16, 2017 Grand Island residents will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for the school district budget vote. For those voters who qualify, absentee ballots will be available. To be considered for an absentee ballot, you must fit one of the following categories:
1. Duties, Occupation or Business outside of County or Town.
2. Vacation outside of County.
3. Patient in the hospital.
4. Unable to appear personally at the polling place on such day because of illness or physical disability.
5. A. Will be detained in jail for an offense other than a felony or awaiting trial or Grand Jury action.
B. Will be confined in prison after conviction for an offense other than a felony.
6. Absence from the school district on the day of election by reason of accompanying or being with a spouse, child or parent who is an eligible district voter and is eligible for an absentee ballot due to one of the above or below listed reasons.
7. Confinement due to permanent illness or disability.

    FOLLOW THE STEPS LISTED BELOW TO RECEIVE YOUR ABSENTEE BALLOT.
1. REQUEST AN APPLICATION. Call (773-8801) or write the District Clerk, Janet Schuster, Grand Island Central School District, 1100 Ransom Road, Grand Island, NY 14072, for an application.
2. RETURN YOUR APPLICATION. Once you have completely filled out the application for an Absentee Ballot, you must return it to the District Clerk's office located in the District Offices adjacent to the High School. It may be mailed or hand-delivered, but must be received at least seven (7) days before the election in order for the ballot to be mailed to the voter.
3. FILL OUT YOUR BALLOT AND TURN IT IN. Assuming the above instructions have been properly completed and you have qualified for an Absentee Ballot, you will receive a ballot in the mail which will contain the same information as the ballot on the day of the vote. Follow the instructions on the ballot and either mail it or hand deliver it to the District Clerk's office. However, it must be received by the District Clerk's office no later than 5:00pm on the day of the vote (May 16, 2017).




School Board Asks For Tax Increase - April 2017

At the April 18th Grand Island School Board meeting, the trustees unanimously approved a 2.62 % increase. That equals to an additional 31 cents per $1000 of assessed value. The vote will take place on Tuesday, May 16th. Voters will also be asked to approve the purchase of seven new buses and vote for two school board seats. See Buffalo News article by Nancy Fischer.

A School Board meeting will be held at the Professional Development Room, GIHS, 1100 Ransom Road, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. An anticipated executive session is at 6:30 p.m., and a public session is at 7:30 p.m. Video conferencing will be used as part of this meeting for Trustee Donna Tomkins. Mrs. Tomkins' location will be 801 Snug Island, Clearwater, Florida 33767. The public has the right to attend the public portion of this meeting at this location. School Board Legal Notice - March 2017

   Grand Island Central School District (the "District") of the Town of Grand Island, Erie County, New York, will hold a Budget Hearing. Said Hearing shall be held for the purpose of presentation and discussion of the 2017-2018 District budget and shall be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 7:00 p.m., Prevailing Time, in the High School Professional Development Room, 1100 Ransom Road, Grand Island, New York. Family Health Fair - February 2017

   The Grand Island CSD Health and Wellness Council is sponsoring a Family Health Fair on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the GIHS large cafeteria, 1100 Ransom Road. There will be free healthy snacks, fun activities, health screenings, games, raffles and the pool will be open for a family swim. See flyer for details.


Kindergarten Registration Opens - February 2017

   Appointments for kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year at Grand Island Central School District are now being accepted. The Central Registration packets are available at the District Office, 1100 Ransom Road. Packets are also available on the District website homepage (www.grandislandschools.org) under Quick Links, New Student Registration. The Central Registration Packet is in the Related Files area at the bottom of the page.
   New student registration is done by appointment only. Please contact the district at (716) 773-8800, extension 0, to schedule an appointment upon completion and collection of all necessary registration documents. District office hours are 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. when school is in session. During recess and summer, office hours are 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. The office is closed on holidays. In addition to a completed registration packet, the following information is required for the appointment:
  • An Original Birth Certificate: The original will be photocopied by our staff and returned to you immediately. (We cannot accept a Baptismal Certificate or Hospital Certificate.)
  • Proof of Immunization: The necessary list is enclosed in the registration packet. We can accept doctor's verification only.
  • Driver's License: For photo proof only.
  • Proof of Residency: A primary and a secondary form of proof are required. Please see "Proof of Residency List" in the registration packet for acceptable forms.
  • Custody Documents: In the case of divorce and separation, custody papers must be on file with the school district.
  • Guardianship Documents: If you have been awarded guardianship of a child, these legal papers are required for registration.
  • Report Card/Transcript: Your child's last report card and transcript.

    GICSD Substitute Recruitment Fair - January 2017

       Grand Island Central School District will hold a substitute recruitment job fair on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Substitutes are needed in all areas at the district office, high school, middle school and three elementary schools, as well as transportation and building and grounds. The job fair will be held at Grand Island High School, 1100 Ransom Road. Plenty of parking is available.
       All applicants for substitute teachers and aides, nurses, custodial, buildings and grounds, food service, clerical, bus drivers and attendants will be required to complete the WNY Schools Standard Application online by February 21, 2017. Candidates for the teaching and nurse substitutes will use the 'View Open Certified Positions' and search for the per diem substitute postings for recruitment day. Candidates for the school monitor, cafeteria monitor, food service helpers, bus attendant, teacher aides, cleaner, clerical and bus driver substitute positions will use the 'View Open Classified Positions' and search for the per diem substitute postings for recruitment day. If you do not have access to a computer, you may apply online at the District Office.
       Candidates with completed applications will receive an email with an appointment time slot for a brief interview during the job fair. Successful candidates will be contacted the following day. The mission of the Grand Island School District is to foster academic excellence, personal growth, and social responsibility. Substitutes are critical to the staffing of our buildings and may lead to permanent employment.
