James Tomkins

James Tomkins, of Grand Island, a local business owner and general contractor in Western New York for more than 50 years who performed carpentry at the Darwin Martin House, died Friday in Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was 77.
Mr. Tomkins was raised in Buffalo’s Riverside neighborhood, but during World War II, his family moved back to his parents’ native countries of England and Ireland. Following his graduation from McKinley High School in 1953, Mr. Tomkins served several years in the New York National Guard. Mr. Tomkins went on to a long career as a contractor, working on hundreds of historic homes, developing and maintaining a loyal customer base, many of whom became his friends.
Some of Mr. Tomkins’ proudest career moments, family members recalled, were working on the Darwin Martin House, including serving as a finish carpenter on the construction of the pergola. In his retirement, Mr. Tomkins also contributed his many skills to Habitat for Humanity, helping construct and remodel homes in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Mr. Tomkins also volunteered his time with many local organizations including the Town Boys’ Club, Meals on Wheels, Re-Tree WNY and the WNY Peace Center, which gave him a peace award. Social activism, including environmental issues, were ever on Mr. Tomkins’ radar, even before the movement became popularized. As a father of five, Mr. Tomkins taught his children to pick up litter and stressed recycling long before it was widely available. Mr. Tomkins was active in the Nuclear Freeze movement, engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the Seneca Army Depot to protest the presence of cruise missiles. He traveled to Russia and Cuba on peace missions; he also was part of a group that went to Nicaragua and built a hospital in the village of Esteli.
Mr. Tomkins was a Little League baseball coach and trailblazer for girls to play the sport when he coached the team of his youngest daughter, Nancy, who broke the gender barrier by becoming the first girl to play in Western New York. Mr. Tomkins was also involved in many community organizations, including the Grand Island Quality Quest, the Grand Island Conservation Board and the West River Homeowners’ Association. He also used his carpentry skills to build a bridge in the Town Commons. An avid woodworker, Mr. Tomkins built boats and other items with his children and grandchildren. He was fond of the outdoors and enjoyed sailing, hiking, biking, canoeing, camping and bird-watching. When he wasn’t outside, family members said Mr. Tomkins could be found reading books about U.S. history or the newspaper. Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez
- Buffalo News Obituary
GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) — The world's oldest man, a 112-year-old self-taught musician, coal miner and gin rummy aficionado from western New York, has died. He was 112. Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez died Friday at a nursing home in Grand Island, according to Robert Young, senior gerontology consultant with Guinness World Records. Sanchez-Blazquez became the world's oldest man when Jiroemon Kimura died June 12 at age 116.
Born June 8, 1901, in village of El Tejado de Bejar, Spain, he was known for his talent on the dulzaina, a double-reed wind instrument that he taught himself and played at weddings and village celebrations. At 17, he moved with his older brother Pedro and a group of friends to Cuba, where they worked in the cane fields. In 1920, he came to the United States through Ellis Island and worked in the coal mines of Lynch, Ky. Ultimately, he moved to the Niagara Falls area of New York, where he worked in construction and in the industrial furnaces. He married his wife, Pearl, in 1934. A spokeswoman for Sanchez-Blazquez's family did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.
In a statement provided by Guinness World Records earlier this summer, Sanchez-Blazquez — whose nickname was "Shorty" — said he was humbled by the attention, saying he didn't feel he accomplished anything special just because he has lived longer than most. "He says, 'I'm an old man and let's leave it at that,'" his daughter, 69-year-old Irene Johnson, said at the time. Sanchez-Blazquez lived with Johnson in Grand Island after his wife died in 1988; he moved to a nursing home in 2007. "We did our best," Johnson said. "We weren't going to put him somewhere just because he was old." Sanchez-Blazquez had said his longevity was attributed to eating one banana per day and his daily dose of six Anacin tablets. His daughter had another theory. "I think it's just because he's an independent, stubborn man," she said.
Besides his daughter, Sanchez-Blazquez had a 76-year-old son, John, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Guinness says the world's oldest person is a woman, 115-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan. Young said 90 percent of all supercentenarians are female and Sanchez-Blazquez had been the only male born in 1901 with proof of birth. Arturo Licata, 111, of Italy, is now the leading candidate to be officially recognized by Guinness as the current world's oldest man, according to Young. Guinness will make a pronouncement on Licata at a later date. The oldest authenticated person was Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who died at the age of 122 years and 164 days. Sanchez-Blazquez is to be buried at Gate of Heaven cemetery in Lewiston, N.Y. following a private funeral, according to John Colucci, of M.J. Colucci & Son Funeral Chapels.

Together they sailed across the oceans and lived in many different places such as Europe, Panama, California, Washington, N. Carolina, New York and Georgia where her son, Ronald E. Dahlberg (2001) was born.
Liane was known for her many charitable acts of kindness and service toward mankind. Her 20 year employment career was spent at the Erie County Medical Center as a nurse’s aide in the recovery room where she was also awarded Employee of the Month in 1982 and Top Gun Award in 1992. Upon her retirement from ECMC she focused her attention on service and charity for active military members, veterans, and the organizations dedicated to helping others. She lived her life with an appreciation for the pursuit of knowledge by watching trivia TV shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, reading National Geographic magazines, and watching documentaries, etc. Liane was very much liked by all who knew her as she consistently had a kind smile and keen sense of humor to offer. Her sisters, especially Olga, will remember and cherish the time they spent together on the telephone at 8pm every day. Special recipients of her friendship such as Thelma Perry and her grandchildren will cherish the annual Christmas Eve dinners in her home where she cooked for any and all to share time in her life.
Liane is fondly remembered for generous contributions of herself, her time, efforts, struggles, victories and so much more. Three words to describe Liane M. Dahlberg are ACCEPTING, WILLFUL & DETERMINED. She accepted things as they were, she willfully changed the things she could, and she was wise enough to have determined the difference. Liane represented a pillar of strength and sense of pride with her rich history, worldly experiences, and outgoing personality.
Grandson, Chris R. Dahlberg and family would like express their gratitude for VFW Post #9249 and the Ladies Auxiliary for their part and many years in Liane M. Dahlberg’s life and more specifically for their generous memorial service including honor guards at 4pm, Sunday, August 4, 2013.
