2026 Grand Island Girls’ Modified Basketball - February 2026

Click for larger view.
Front row: E Vincent, Asst. Capt. T Parisi, E Chiddy, R Yaksich, Capt. H Tracy, L Nelson.
Back row: Coach A Meaney, M Asbach, G Spiesz, G Fusco, G Brady, L LeFand, Asst Coach R Meaney.

The Connor Middle School girls’ modified basketball team had a very successful ‘25-’26 campaign. The 14 game schedule can be grueling at times in the rough-and-tumble Niagara Frontier League, but the girls comported themselves well in all contests. The growth in skills and overall teamwork was exponential as the season went along and, in the end, they won the last game of the season and isn’t that always the goal (see: Bills)?
The team was heavy with eighth graders, but the four seventh graders were a good portion of the team’s heart and soul. Emma Chiddy started off the season with some great potential ~ 14 points in four games ~ but unfortunately had an injury in game five that kept her out for the remainder of the games. She has recovered nicely and is looking forward to next year. Gianna Spiesz was a forward who became more adept as the games progressed and she got more playing time under her belt. Her old school three vs. NW was very satisfying. Layla Nelson and Taylor Parisi were our other two seventh graders and they were also co-Most Valuable Players. Layla led the team in trips to the charity stripe, scored 57 points, and was Queen of the Skills Competition with five wins. Layla played taller than she presents, boxing out and scrapping for loose balls. Layla also liked helping out the referees by calling out the other teams’ travels and three seconds. Taylor Parisi, the other co-MVP, was also the Assistant Captain. Taylor was only 10 points shy of being a Viking Centurion (100 points) as she posted 90 of our collective 287 points. In the last game of the season versus a tough CSAT squad that had beaten us earlier in the year, Taylor scored 17 of our 33 points by raining down five three pointers in the win. Taylor truly loves the game and will be fun to watch in the coming seasons.
The rest of the Mod Squad consisted of middle school seniors, but only three returners ~ the other four were senior newbies. Gianna Brady was a senior newbie that grew into the position over the course of the season, finishing with eight points in the final game on four putbacks that never came below her forehead. If she keeps it up, JV will be very happy. Another 8th grade first-timer was Liberty LeFand, who put in 49 points over the season and was aggressive going to the basket and getting rebounds. Many could benefit watching her layup steps. Our final two, Emily Vincent and Michaela Asbach, were shut down defensive specialists. Emily Vincent grew as the season progressed, forcing herself to be played with her aggressive rebounding and boxing out. Emily seemed to thrive on the contact. Michaela was a cheap suit in a rain storm ~ she may have only let up three baskets all year in coverage. Once she proved what she could be, she rarely came off the floor. She was often the coach’s voice on the court, reminding everyone of their responsibilities.
And finally, the three returners: Gianna Fusco, Raeven Yaksich, and Captain Haley Tracy. Gianna loves the game and has almost never missed a practice or game in two years. Her determination and quiet work ethic during periods of free time are a testament to her desire to be the best player she can be – something from which we can all learn. Raeven Yaksich came out of the blocks like gangbusters, showing other forwards how physical it is in the paint. Raeven was leading by example. Unfortunately, she too had a season cut short due to an injury but will be able to return for spring sports. Raeven was averaging almost 18 minutes a game before she went down and will be a big help on JV next year. And finally, Captain Haley Tracy. Haley brought an immeasurable amount to the team this year, both in terms of how hard she played when on the court and in the logistics of being a captain. It is not easy keeping a herd of cats together, but Haley did a commendable job that will serve her well in future leadership roles.
The team would like to thank all the fans that came out in support of their efforts ~ it did not go unnoticed. Many thanks also to scorekeeper extraordinaire Cooper Tracy and Assistant Coach Rose Meaney, as she begins a lengthy career of prowling sidelines with a furrowed brow.
